  • J4 is a mountain (3/3).

Grendan dove on the enemy mage, axe lashing at lightning speed to land two devastating strikes that killed his foe before they even had the chance to form the first word of an incantation. Not to be shown up, Bette bounded through the snowy field, slinging a barrage of dark magic at one of the archers who had just been turning the wyvern knight into a pin cushion, and moments later nothing remained of the enemy soldier but a cloud of acrid smoke rising from a small crater, and a fine bow lying in the show.

Azadokht continued to horn in on Malia's job, scurrying to transfer a bottle of potent healing medicine from Railen to Diane so the latter could administer it to Talbot, getting the horseman back on his hooves with a swig.

Ignoring the remaining soldiers, Railen dashed forward, spending the last of the day's magic in his staff in order to conjure up one more spire of rock, right in front of the enemy general, trapping him in his gateway.

    • Hodeskall 62's attack deals 5 damage to Grendan (3/31).

"You think you've trapped me, runt?" Hagen laughed, a manic gleam in his eye as he twirled his spear. "I'll gut you like a suckling pig!"

Quick as an arrow, the enemy general's spear struck, catching Railen a heavy blow to the ribs before he could dodge behind the rocks. The rogue tried to strike back, but his wound hindered him, and his strike swung wide as he fought to keep his footing.

The knight behind Railen took one look at the rogue's perch, and turned away, knowing they would never be able to land a killing blow, and instead lumbered toward the mercenary group, and the vulnerable mage on their flank. Kicking up snow like a charging boar, the knight lashed out with their sword. The mage saw them coming, and nimbly sidestepped the knight's first strike, but as her foot came down, it found a hidden pothole in the road beneath the snow, and the knight's blade found her flesh. As she fell, the mage slid one spellbook into a holster on her hip and drew another from the other side in a fluid motion. Her fall threw up a spray of snow that hung in the air for a moment, then abruptly changed direction as her magic took hold of the surrounding elements. The knight had only a moment to glance from side to side as giant icicles lanced out of the snow, punching through their armor like tissue paper, and the body slumped.

The surviving archers weren't done with Grendan, firing another salvo of arrows at the wyvern knight. One hit its mark, the Heath roared in pain as the missile sunk into his flank. The mighty beast settled to the ground for a moment, just long enough for an enemy swordsman to lunge forward, treating Grendan to a strike to the gut. The hulking spearman who had taken Talbot down a moment before turned his attention to the mercenaries cutting the soldiers off from their fort, and charged at their leader, running him through with his spear. The captain grunted as the spear struck, and with a snarl, struck back with such speed and ferocity that his momentum carried him in a spin to strike again, cleaving a bloody cross over the spearman's chest. Both men remained standing, just barely, heaving for breath as their blood spattered the snow. ____________________

  • Merc 5 moves to L8 and uses an Elixir (0/3) on Merc Captain.
    • Merc 5 fully restores Merc Captain's hit points (35/35).
    • Merc 5 heals Merc 2 (Heal Staff 7/10, no charge spent).
    • Merc 5 restores 13 hit points to Merc 2 (18/24).
  • Merc 4 moves to J9 and attacks Hodeskall 62 (Composite Bow)!
    • Merc 4's attack deals 17 damage to Hodeskall 62 (-1/31).

  • Merc 2 moves to L3 and attacks Hagen (Frost Tome)!
    • Merc 2's attack misses.

    • Merc Captain's attack deals 20 damage to Hodeskall 59 (-2/33).
    • Hodeskall 59 dies!

The mercenaries' own hulking warrior charged forward with a roar, swinging his gigantic axe like the pendulum of fate, smashing through the spearman's feeble attempt to block, and crushing the life out of him with the sheer weight of his weapon more than anything.

"You okay, sir?" the hulk said, wrenching his axe free of the earth, in which it had left a gouge several inches deep after exiting the spearman.

"Will be... but we've got... other problems," the captain grunted. He gestured to Railen's latest spire. "No getting to Hagen now. Clean up... the rest of his troops... until we can reach him."

The mercenaries nodded, and spears and arrows finished off more of the enemy soldiers. As the fighters pressed the attack, the mercenary medic jogged up to his captain, medicine already in hand.

"Here, sir. Careful now, that's the last of it," he said, already turning his staff on the mage who was picking herself up out of the snow.

"So we finish this quickly, then," the captain said. "Lyra, get up there and start pressuring Hagen. They've got him trapped, but he's still got an edge in that fort."

The mage nodded, and hurried forward. "Hello again," she called to Railen on his spire. "And yeah, we met in Watchcloud last year."

"Oh, goddess damn it, Lyra," the captain grumbled, then pushed his frustration aside, and charged to remove one more foe from the field, cutting down another archer with a leaping slash that planted him between Heath and the fresh corpse that moments ago had been engaging him in a staring contest at arrow-point.

"GRAWR!" the wyvern roared triumphantly, beating his wings in victory. The wind threw up another spray of snow, and the mercenary captain threw up his arm to shield his face, but that didn't stop the hood of his cloak from being blown back, and as he lowered his arm and cursed under his breath, a face that Grendan could never forget came into view.

It was a face that had pursued them from Frael through the Cairns. It was a face that had demanded the laying down of arms, and the surrender of Prince Addelus. It was the face of the man who had cut down his mentor in a walled mountain village months ago.

It was the face of Lieutenant Corban Greham, the Vissan Ranger.

It didn’t manifest.

It didn’t manifest.

That’s never happened before.

These thoughts flicker through Azadokht’s mind, driving her downwards. She pushes them away for the moment and instead looks towards their final objective: the fortress commander, the one who undoubtedly gave the order to shoot down an innocent pegaz who just so happens to be quite close to her heart.

That intoxicating mixture of joy and anger returns easily.

So Azadokht charges. This time, the radiance does manifest.

Once the turns of everyone else designated to be attacking Hodeskall 3 are over or Hodeskall 3 is defeated, whichever comes first, Azadokht dashes; if Hodeskall 3 has not yet been defeated, she moves to I7 and attacks Hodeskall 3 with her Lightning Tome, whereas she otherwise moves to J5 and attacks Hagen with her Lightning Tome.

Grendan... was not having a good day, as proven by the fact that he'd avoided his latest brush with death by the narrowest margin possible. Fortunately, things appeared to be turning around; there were only two enemies remaining, and both seemed to have some sort of blind spot. Time to finish things up.

He could react appropriately to Greham's presence when he wasn't on the brink of death, hopefully; for now, he supposed he could reluctantly accept a truce.

If Hodeskall 3 is not dead: Move adjacent to Hodeskall 3 and attack with Brave Axe; otherwise, move to H3 and attack Hagen with Throwing Axe.

Assuming Hodeskall 3 dies, requesting that Diane heals Railen with Physic Staff, from wherever is most appropriate for her to do so.

Brendan gasped loudly at the new revelation, only to realize he had no idea who that guy even was.

"Oh. Hi!"

The clueless soldier waved to Greham like he was an old friend, only to almost zip behind the enemy archer, swinging an axe he had never held, yet it felt like there was still an odd sense of reverence... Like this blade had history. Nonetheless, Brendan hoped this axe would find it's target.

    • Hodeskall 3 dies!
    • Bette picks up a Greatbow. note
    • Bette is carrying too many weapons and must send one to storage.
  • Azadokht dashes to J5 and attacks Hagen (Lightning Tome)!
    • Azadokht's attack deals 15 damage to Hagen (29/44).
  • Grendan moves to H3 and attacks Hagen (Throwing Axe)!
    • Hagen's Quick Draw equips his Axereaver.
    • Grendan's attack misses.
  • Sophia teleports to I4 (Twilight Crown 1/3) and attacks Hagen (Wind Tome)!
    • Sophia's attack misses.
    • Sophia's extra strike deals 24 damage to Hagen (5/44).
  • Talbot dashes to K4 and attacks Hagen (Short Spear)!
    • Talbot's attack deals 10 damage to Hagen (-5/44).
    • Hagen dies!

"Argh! Defeated by such... miserable... swine! Lord Fulric... how can this be!" the enemy general groaned as his blood dripped down Talbot's spear, which had punched right through his armor and out the other side. He slumped against the gateway of the fort, trying vainly to remain upright and heft his spear, but he was clearly doomed. A few more moments, and he would be no more.

Greham didn't let him have them. The Vissan officer came flying over Railen's spire with a little assistance from his hulking subordinate, and without a word, finished the dying man with a swift blow to the neck. The body had hardly hit the ground before Greham was rifling through its pockets, and a moment later, pulled something out, inspected it, and shoved it into the pocket of his own coat.

"We're done here," he said, climbing back out of the entrapped entrance. "Withdraw and regroup at base."

His spearwoman stepped forward. "Sir, what about..."

Greham glanced at the Company. They had borne the brunt of the battle, were still scattered across the field, and some were still in serious need of healing.

"Not our mission. Withdraw."

As quickly as they had come, Greham and his troops took off up the pass, only moments after the Company's reserve group started to catch up to the battle group. Malia watched them go with her mouth agape, and when they disappeared from sight around a turn in the road, she went running for Grendan.

"Grendan! That wasn't...?!"

"Yeah... that was him. I'm sure of it," Grendan muttered in reply. "I have no idea why they were here... but I doubt it was the Emblem, since nobody in their right minds would leave it with an overly-bloodthirsty border guard."

Raising his voice so the swordsman could hear him, he called, "Hey Railen, you see what they were after?"

Azadokht nods a decisive nod as the spear impales the commander, relaxing her body and letting the fury and elation of combat and motion subside. She breathes – and then she hears the conversation and readies herself again. “I could go after them if you wan…”

She trails off as Osroes comes into view. He leads Rsama, the noble pegaz limping slowly down the pass over the broken bodies of the dead, free of tack and armour and hind leg held off the ground. His companion mutters words of reassurance in his ear as they walk.

The dancer looks to them, pained, concerned, then turns again to Grendan and Malia to ask a silent question, her almost pleading expression telling them everything that they need to know about how much she doesn’t want to fulfil the task that she just offered herself for, at least not right now.

"Hey, where you- Oh, okay then. I see how it is."

Brendan walked up to Malia and Grendan, and asked the big Q:

"DIO is the ultimate being! The being of the future! Dare you not to rival me!"

"His name is Greham. He's the leader of an elite Vissan squad that chased us across Frael after the invasion," Grendan explained. "We're not too fond of him, since he killed our late commander. I'm not sure why he was here, but at a guess I'd say he got reassigned because his commander stole credit for his work one too many times."

Astra chose that moment to flap into view... and promptly recoil in horror at Grendan's condition, shooing him off to the side for medical treatment (and possibly a little field surgery, unless that hint of intestine they could see was a disturbing trick of the light).

Azadokht takes that as her cue to choose her preferred course of action: rushing directly over to intercept the injured pegaz and the man leading him. “He’s alright?”

“I hope so…” Osroes matches her worry, glancing over to Rsama and reaching over to rub him on the neck. “The bolt struck bone, not tendon, and glanced, may you be thanked. I’ve cleaned the wound and applied a vulnerary. Still, we must not put stress on the leg, at least for a few days – that’s why I’ve been led him up here.” He presses his lips together, his face determined. “I don’t agree with that theory but you are not worth the risk of my being wrong.”

Aza looks into the pegaz’s eye as he stands as proudly as he is able, scratching his muzzle and mustering a smile. “You’ve got a good bondmate, you know, Rsama?”

“And the perpetrators?”

“Just joined the radiant armies.” She turns, taking Osroes’ hand and returning with him and his companion – slowly – to the rest of the group. “They said some things before that, though… From what I heard, they’re some sort of ‘Reginbor purification’ movement. You think that they’re like the people you all faced in Chamur?” Azadokht asks, looking to the others.

Talbot quietly listens to Grendan's explanation of Greham as he's pushed away by the Manakete. If this is what they were capable of when they were fighting against another group, they must've been a real nightmare to fight against.

"Jeez. I'd hate to run into those guys in an alleyway. I'm kind of glad they helped us out back there."

Damien is still resting up from that head wound. For some reason, he was tied up. It was probably because the B-Team was getting tired of the name mix-ups.

"Thanks!"

"Ooookay...." Bette said. She shook her head and walked off towards the others.

"Maybe I should get a cool mask," she said to Railen. "Something that scream 'dark and mysterious' - but still fantastic enough to be awe-inspiring and symbolic."

Osroes raises an eyebrow at that. “Ironic.”

“Oh hush, you.” Azadokht smiles, squeezing his hand to grant him confidence.

Osroes huffs but smiles himself nonetheless, closing his eyes a moment. When he opens them, he addresses the others: “I assume, then, that we proceed through the pass and to the capital as intended? From what Aza tells me, Reginbor may currently be in a state of civil conflict… I fear that I do not know enough of Regin politics to know how that affects our mission – though,” he considers, glancing up, “fighting the destabilising forces would possibly be a way of currying favour with the royal household. As you have quite likely just done.”

He stops for a moment, frowning. Then his gaze straightens towards nothing in particular, mirroring the blankness of his expression. “If I may be permitted a jump to conclusions,” he says in a sardonic tone, “I think there’s a good chance that we just advanced our cause here entirely by accident.”

Ailes nodded at Osroes' suggestion. "Indeed. We should proceed directly to the capitol at Jormandur. If Vissan troops are already at large in the kingdom, our time is preciously short." The Calderian spymaster looked at Malia and cleared his throat purposefully. "We have no time to waste on personal entanglements."

Malia stiffened like someone had just dropped ice down the back of her sweater, and her normally sweet expression turned to a glare. "You know, Ailes, just because you're right doesn't mean you have to be such an... asshole about it," she said, and started trudging off up the road.

Diane treated Ailes to a smug smirk and followed after her, Addelus a pace behind.

“Oh, we did; don’t worry yourself over that.” Azadokht smirks, an expression which softens as she breezes over to Malia's side. “Mmm,” she answers Bette, “and besides, it’s worth it. We’re using time, not wasting it. I don’t know how many fascinating people I’ve met just by wandering around Tasmag for half a day.” She pats one of the throwing axes on her belt.

Osroes thinks for a moment, then walks with his companion to stand by Ailes. “It could possibly be considered in terms of morale; I would imagine that we will march more quickly if we are happy and motivated. Without Rsama or Azadokht I know that I would not be nearly as effective in combat; my mind would be far less settled, less determined.” He considers. “Such interaction as we move would be the ideal, of course.”
