I must admit I fell into this trap myself but going about the wiki I have found terms that are insensitive to people of certain races, religion, sex and other special interest groups. One in particular that sits unwell with me is slurs on the disabled and after Tropic Thunder set a record for attacking people with mental handicaps the use of such wording was considered discrimination and hate speech. Now I certainly do not want to come across as a Troper With An Agenda and I am all for No Lewdness No Prudishness...well maybe a little lewdness, but how about a cleanup to...well, clean up speech that belittles minorities? I know coming across such comments that apply to me makes me feel like less of a person and I know it applies to others who are attacked in such a manner as well.

I certainly agree that slurs and hate speech should be nuked on sight, but do we have any infestations bad enough that cleaning them up would constitute a long-term project?

I'm with [up] here - of course we should remove any instance of hate speech that isn't quoting a work, but do we have proof that this is a problem widespread enough that it requires a long term project?

Not sure about a long term project but I have been seeing the problem for a while now and think, yeah, something done would be good.

I am concerned that the OP appears to be conflating slurs/hate speech with mere insensitivity, when they are distinct concepts. Most notably, the former requires malicious intent and the latter doesn't. If I understand this site's policies correctly, general acceptance of a term trumps perceived insensitivity or a declaration by some special interest group that the term is a slur.

Bigotry in the name of inclusion is still bigotry.

To be blunt, the use of the phrase "retard" has been addressed as discrimination and hate speech after the outcry from Tropic Thunder and people with disabilities said of the constant bombardment of the term made them feel like less of a person. Thus it is considered in this day and age as the same as racial or homosexual slurs. Evidence of this stems from the workplace, I have seen such comments used as an insult lead to instant dismissal. If the issue is treated that seriously then should we not give thought to changing instances where retard, retarded and the like are used?

We already have a project thread based around negativity here. Also, you aren't proving that there is an underlying problem large enough for a project, so there's nothing that can be done at this time.

Closing.
