Paper Mario General

Eh. Arlo gonna Arlo. I dont think his points are invalid even if he was very clearly hyper-focused on certain aspects. And it is valid to compare Paper Mario as it is to Paper Mario as it was. They are fundamentally different games now, mechanically. I'm just glad the writing is still snappy and generally just fun overall. That's the overall core of the experience in my mind.

Err, can I point out that risk of "ah his biases as blinded him" is that usually people saying that are justifying their own bias by calling opposite opinions bias?

Anyway, I agree with his point of "Well every new paper mario game gets better further creativity the team is allowed... So what is the point of restricting their creativity in first place when we had evidence of that working even before?"

Like his main frustration is with the whole "not allowed to create new things that could fit mario world and have to have limit with how much you can modify mario characters"

I'm... not really sure how even people who like new paper mario games could disagree with that?

(that said video seems too long because by 25 you can pretty much dissect his best point and rest of it seems venting out. And I'm at 29 :p Video seems quickly become slower after his main point and rest of it feels like going down list of nitpicks xD)

You don't have to create new things...just use what's already existing and be creative with those.

In relation to enemies that's a lot more than some people seem to think or they wouldn't be confused by something as basic as a Dry Goomba.

The regular games create a lot of new enemies and areas as it is.

^^Umm. Can't tell if you are being facetious or not. Like can you really say you "prefer" them to not create new things if they wanted to?

They are not allowed to create new things anyway...

They are not even allowed to distinguish age or gender of characters...

But that doesn't mean nothing can be done.

It means that something is able to be done.

Is it too limiting?

Paper Mario overall just feels like its fallen into Star Fox territory of simultaneously being a dumping ground for experiments in gameplay while also being a bit sterile by the creative limitations put forth by Nintendo. Thus is both lacks stable ground to build upon and seems a bit old hat in its characters.

Geek Critique, who's done some wonderful analyses of various series (including Metroid, Sonic, & Donkey Kong Country) just posted a fantastic look at the original Paper Mario. Don't let the title fool you, its an overall positive and insightful look at the game.

Man I disagree with him on the filler. If I recall shy guys toybox isn't as linear as he's making it out to be, and I did like how you interacted with the town at hand to change the toybox. I know I'm in the minority here, but I really like chapter 6, it's structured like a puzzle box so I like that. Still it was a very a good video.

I'm probably the only person who played the main Paper Mario games, but not Super Mario RPG in great capacity because the Paper Mario games just made everything Super Mario RPG did and better. When I played Super Mario RPG I simply could never tell if I was attacking right because there weren't any prompts to help guide me to executing those attacks properly, and it was more difficult to determine if I did them right or not. That, and the first few bosses were absolute slog-fests.

I just watched Bobby the Bob-Omb's death...I am not sure how to feel about it. I will admit that it was well done but I spoiled myself silly not his game, I guess I just need time to accept it. I still wish we had more party members for Origami King.

I had a thought earlier that Luigi's vacuum would probably have been pretty useful in getting all the paint off the final boss at the end of Color Splash. Too bad the Dark Bloo Inn's Toad's messages went straight to voicemail!

Wicked Binge (Well, 1-Up Binge) Did an Evil to Most Evil on Paper Mario villains! Paper Jam doesn't count, by the way.

I'd put Dimentio over the Queen, mainly cause he got way more screentime and less Offscreen Villainy, and his endgame is worse.

According to the video, Demintio isn't at the top because we don't know what his idea of a perfect world is, while we know how destructive Shadow Queen is.

We know that his perfect world doesn't include anything that's in the current one, so it's no less destructive. Also, dude's clearly a dick, so I doubt his "perfect" world would be all that great.

Honestly, this video series feels like bad takes all around.

Bowser stole the star rod... He may be goofy, but I think he's evil enough.

Edit: Looking at his reasoning... it's kinda silly (he averages the villainy over games), which I think is stupid, but I guess sort of has a bit of a logic to it.

What was your guys' favorite badge from 64/TTYD? Mine was always the Happy Heart Badge cause every time it activated I smiled. (And Power Jump for basic attack boosting.)

Power Plus/Defend Plus and Power Bounce. I liked feeling more powerful offensively/defensively. And I especially liked pwning enemies through power bounce.

Rawk Hawk's not a villain, just a jerk. Same thing for Don Pianta, he leads a crime syndicate, but not actually evil. I'd put Vivian below TEC as the least evil Paper Mario villain since Vivian was never shown thinking positively of Grodus. Cortez in the least evil tier? He was a pirate having clearly stolen treasures from people and possibly killed them, he even kills half the audience during his boss fight.

Vivian does fight Mario, though. TEC doesn't. XD
