A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Premise and excerpt of African-inspired fantasy novel ''Rage of Dragons by Afro-British writer Evan Winter.
Yes, you read that right. His name is Evan Winter and his novel has women who control dragons.
It's going to be really hard for anyone to resist making a "Winter is Coming" pun on their book-jacket endorsements.
@Windleopard: both sounds interesting. Jinn Sounds more.like my type IMO.

Watch me destroying my countryRotten Tomatoes have made it that you have to have purchased a ticket before rating a movie to prevent trolls bombing the audience scores.[1]
Edited by ComicFan on May 23rd 2019 at 10:51:42 AM
Huh, that's cool and all, but how are they gonna verify that? Will you have to post a photo of your ticket or something?
You have to buy through Fandango.
Yeah, I’m sensing ulterior motives.
They've invited other ticket services to participate, this system is used to prevent review bombing in other metrics like Maoyan and Cinemascore, and there's been a huge outcry to do this over the alt-right review bombs, so I don't see any reason to assume that this is a greed-based move at all.
Also, I really don't see another way to stop the trolling of popular movies.
I'm assuming this gets lifted once the movie's out of theaters and available for purchase and streaming, because it's a lot harder to verify things after that.
And if it does, There will likely still be data from the theater releases to compare to the general data. By that point the internet hate machine is likely focused on another target but if not, then the theater data would be the more "true" one for the purposes of gauging reception.
Gentleman Jack, the lesbian historical drama on HBO I've mentioned the last few pages, has been renewed for a Season 2. Episode 6 of 8 will be released Monday night before Chernobyl.
So with the upcoming Mortal Kombat movie, do you think they should cast a Japanese actor to play Raiden?
Edited by windleopard on May 24th 2019 at 6:50:15 AM
I think that would be a good idea. It's an easy misstep to cast a Chinese actor on the grounds that he mostly interacts with the White Lotus, but Raiden is Japanese god so a Japanese actor would probably be a better fit.
Of course, we're more likely to get Insert Asian Ethnicity Here 'cause Hollywood thinks all Asians look the same.
And we're even more likely to get a White Male Default and have to put up with months of people going "Dude, he's not Japanese. He's a GOD. Gods don't have races. Duh."
Much as I loved Christopher Lambert's performance in the original film, that's pretty much exactly what happened there.
Late-term edit: Corrected the name of White Lotus. I clearly had not had my coffee when I called them "Order of Light".

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.I mean, that's technically true, Gods don't have a nationality and can look like anything.
The problem is indeed when that argument is used as an excuse not to increase diversity but to reduce it…
People got outraged to see a black Nordic god in Thor, but I wonder if the same would have been outraged to see, say, a white African god… A little, maybe…
Ah yes, when fans complained abput Heimdall being black on the grounds of mythological fidelity but had nothing to say about Thor being blonde instead of a red head.
Any way, I propose Ken Watanabe as Raiden.
I think the only reasonable way to do "gods don't have a race, duh" is to show the god with multiple races. American Gods might be the most famous, with a couple dozen different copies of Jesus at Easter's party, but I've seen others. Some have it where the god's race is clearly just A Form You Are Comfortable With, and therefore is whatever race the person they're talking to is (can also cross over with You Cannot Grasp the True Form).
A trailer for Dreamworks' Abominable which stars Chloe Bennet
But the trio of friends will have to stay one-step ahead of Burnish, a wealthy man intent on capturing a Yeti, and zoologist Dr. Zara to help Everest get home.

There was another animated film about a Yeti and I'm wondering if Dreamworks is being a copucat here
New theme music also a boxI’d say so, only without the charm of the other production.
Depends, you talking about Smallfoot:
or Missing Link:
(fwiw despite being chronologically the last, I think Abonimable looks the best from the trailers alone)
I mean, latter is stop motion animation, so probably the former?
I have a soft spot for the craft of stop motion admittedly. It’s part of why I liked Kubo and the Two Strings.
@Iniuria Talis
18th century really? An episode of Postcards From Buster pulled an episode from 2005 concerning a child with two moms.
