A thread for discussing representation and diversity in all kinds of media. This covers creators and casting decisions as well as characters and in-universe discussions.
Historical works and decisions are in-scope as well, not just recent news.
Please put any spoilers behind tags and clearly state which work(s) they apply to.
This week, producer Ross Putnam started a Twitter account called "femscriptintros", where he puts up examples of how women are introduced in the screenplays he's read. And nearly all of sound like terrible porn or are too concerned with emphasizing said lady is beautiful despite whatever traits she may have. Here's a Take Two podcast made today where he talks about it.

Warning for spoilers.
It's sad to say the Wonder Woman sequel appears to have stumbled badly in regards to race. A shame given its predecessor did much better.
Yeah, having seen the movie... oof, the directions it took on its Middle Eastern characters are confounding and completely unnecessary. :|

The Wonder Woman franchise sadly has a somewhat mixed history when it comes to race. It isn't all bad but when it's bad it really stands out.

Wait Lin Qi was poisoned?
it is hard to see in the dark when your eyes are blinded by the lightYes and then he succumbed to it a few days later.
Michelle Latimer, who I recently mentioned as being exposed for faking her Indigenous identity last page, is also having her documentary, "Inconvenient Indian" pulled.
Two words: Egg Fu.
Hulu Acquires Lee Daniels’ The United States vs. Billie Holiday
It really seems like Latimer's playbook was to adapt already existing Indigenous stories to further her career, using old family stories about native ancestors (which crops up a lot in white families, including my own) as well as what appears to be some outright lies, to try and give herself legitimacy. Canadian novelist Joseph Boyden was accused of a similar deception a few years ago, I think we talked about it in this thread at the time.
I think that it's worth noting that Latimer's projects were far from hers alone. I don't know a lot about the documentary other than its source material, but I know television is a very collaborative medium. There was a lot of actual Indigenous talent involved in both projects, from the source material to the people in front of the camera, in an industry where native people have fewer opportunities. I hope there's a way for them to move forward without Latimer's involvement. Although, I can't imagine the betrayal a lot of those people might be feeling right now, and in the end it is not (and should not be!) my decision.

You don't have to imagine the betrayal they are feeling.
People outright quit Trickster when they found out about this. And the author of the books Eden Robinson went on Twitter saying she felt duped and embarrassed.
Disgusted, but not surprisedCarey Mulligan Rightly Called Out This Disgustingly Sexist Review of Promising Young Woman
Long story short, Promising Young Woman is about a woman seeking revenge for her friend who was raped and committed suicide as a result. She does this by seducing the men who were involved, either as the rapist or the ones who helped the rapist get away. A critic for Variety named Dennis Harvey wrote a review in which he said Carey Mulligan, who plays the main character, wasn't hot enough to play a Heroic Seductress.
Emphasis, mine.
It's kind of telling that his takeaway was "only hot women get raped and I don't personally find the lead actress hot enough". Not surprising though, it's not like people who think like this have gone anywhere.
And because that review was not already skeevy enough, he also more or less said the movie’s producer was attractive enough to be raped.
Blech.
Disgusted, but not surprised"Not hot enough to be raped" is literally something the alt-right has used as a verbal attack against women.
See Carl "I wouldn't even rape you" Benjamin.
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.Theirs also Donald "Not my type" Trump.
"That's right mortal. By channeling my divine rage into power, I have forged a new instrument in which to destroy you."It feels like a deliberate misunderstanding of how rape culture works, because it's more about power than attraction anyway IIRC.

To pity someone is to tell them "I feel bad about being better than you."Yeah, the full article linked does make that point too. Sexual abuse is about power and control, not attraction. It can happen to literally anyone.
"These 'no-nonsense' solutions of yours just don't hold water in a complex world of jet-powered apes and time travel."Nah, it's totally logical that there would be a scene where a sleazy guy sees the drunk, vulnerable Mulligan, prepares to take advantage of her, and then backs off because she's only a 9.5 and he's only a rapist for 10s. /(hopefully unneeded)s
Ava DuVernay Introduces Diverse Database 'Array Crew'
This reminds me of one of the (few) issues I have with MST3K and Rifftrax, where if an actress (especially if a lead actress) isn't deemed hot enough, the cast act as if it's just another bad part of the movie.
It's especially jarring if the actress actually is pretty cute, but just because her body isn't shapely...
If I had a nickel for every film where Emma Stone falls off a balcony... I'd only have two nickels, but weird that there's two of them. What would happen to the people who have talent but dont get on that list for whatever reason? I mean the article seems to imply that the executives should only choose from that list if they want talent
it is hard to see in the dark when your eyes are blinded by the lightThat's the opposite of the point. It's not that it's a list of minorities and producers should pick one, it's there to show that "Oh we'd love proper representation but ya know there just aren't any Hijabi women to do the costume design for our Hijabi characters" (for example) is a BS excuse, and make it easier for those only willing to do the bare minimum to actually help people.

She also made videos about both of Disney’s Mulans incidentally.
…Well that’s nasty. I wonder how that’s gonna affect the project…
RIP to him in any case.

Flippé de participer à ce grand souper, je veux juste m'occuper de taper mon propre tempo.
