Underwater Tunnels - wrong assumptions

"well, no, mostly because i'm not one. at least in your case i got what you were right. i'm pretty sure i've been alive for all of my life, well, except for that one time i died." Sans shrugged. "anyways, we're trying to get to the library ourselves, there should be a submarine in the docking bay here so that's what we're using to get to the surface. wanna come with us?" he asked.

Underwater Tunnels - Impressions

Caro watched with a utterly baffled expression as Sans outright told Curly she had no soul. Given how the skeleton's powers worked, she had no reason to doubt, so it really appeared the other girl was some sort of artificial being, not that matter much in anycase.

Sans also assured her that Cole was right behind him, which was soon proven right when the spirit reappeared and awkwardly spoke to Curly.

Caro flashed him a wam and hopefully comforting smile, saying, "Oh, there, you're, Cole."

Curly understandably didn't like being called a soulless machine and got back at Sans by teasingly asking if he liked being called a corpse. She also confirmed Sans suspisions and asked about the library.

From what Sans said next it was clear that he now simply messing around with Curly. At that point, she might as well clear somethings up.

"Yeah, as far as I know, he somehow has always been a skeleton. And about dying ... I'm pretty sure he means just in this city. I don't know how long you have been stuck in this strange city or you know this already, but in anycase, you can't really die in this place. You'll just be instantly revived somewhere else," She glanced towards the entrance of the docking bay, before looking back at Curly and adding, "And yeah, we were about to use whatever is there to leave this place, before those machines showed up. Good thing you showed up now, though. This is probably the fastest way out of here. You have probably been lost here for a while too, right? But anyway, if you know about the library already, I take that you didn't arrive just today?"

Boaty Rick-Boatface

Rick stared at Wander as the little furry creature mulled over the facts and came to the conclusion that the entire artificially-produced mess they were in was actually some kind of meet-n'-greet, which was true if you looked at it from a certain point of view - a myopic point of view that overlooked things like mass kidnapping and humiliation on a daily basis for most of the residents note .

"I mean - sure, let's go with that," said Rick as he tossed a bottle of gin to the blue dinosaur thing, who seemed more interested by the prospect of fighting monsters than meeting anyone new.

"Well -" put in Morty "-it's like, uh, every day or so the guy throws stuff at us, people go kill 'em for... fun or something... I-i-it's scary. And all the scenery and stuff changes theme every day too. And then there are guys- peop-people, other people in the city are always pissed off with us about somethin' or another... so..."

Whatever Morty was about to say next trailed off into his usual scream of instinctual panic, as something green, slimy, and toothy - a creature that resembled the bastard offspring of the Little Mermaid and the Creature from the Black Lagoon- popped its head out of the water. Morty fumbled for the nearest blunt instrument to try and bludgeon the thing to death before Rick looked over and the fish thing started speaking.

"Yo. Whattup?" Rick motioned his flask to the direction of the boy-turned-aquatic-alien by way of greeting as he punched a few buttons on the dashboard. The boat's engines began glowing their usual emerald green as they started powering up. "Y-you got an alien for *urp* every occasion, huh? Real little cute bag of tricks you got there," he said absent-mindedly as he took another shot.

"So anyway, that's... whatshisname..." Rick fumbled for the name as he spoke to the two newcomers, "...Ben. We were just *urp* goin' to the library," he explained.

"And that's Wander-Wander?" Morty said, then paused as he mulled over the odd implications of that name "-and... Sylvia. They just landed here, and, uh, I-I guess they wanted to go to the library or something?"

"Word of warnin'," mumbled Rick to the newcomers, "Librarian's... she's kind of a bitch. And her name is a terrible pun." Another shot. "I-I dunno which one's worse."

"What? I mean she's not that bad..." said Morty, preparing to launch into another pointless argument before trailing off in mounting horror, stuttering and stammering as he watched what he had thought was just a big underwater rock slowly push its way up to the surface, the waves and swells around them burbling and frothing as something big and overwhelmingly yellow note  shoved its way through the last few feet of water as though it were some new island.

"Morty, w-w- -oh shit." The thing, whatever it was, looked as though some particularly hateful genetic engineer had started with a fifteen-foot long, squidlike creature and then taken the metaphorical brown acid for inspiration. For one thing, there were the eyes. Its body was covered in bright green eyes of all shapes and sizes, blinking and looking around in a totally unpredictable pattern. It raised one of its nine arms to get a closer look at the five adventurers- an arm covered in more eyes, terminating in one particularly large and bloodshot eyeball that twisted this way and that, trying to get a lock on the most edible members of the group.

"RICK!" screamed Morty as the creature began moving closer with a whump-wump noise that sounded like an old paddleboat. It began unpeeling the main section of its body like a ripe banana, revealing a mouth that would make a garbage disposal look like a pair of safety scissors before it grabbed the boat with one eye-covered tentacle. Rick swore again as he smashed an empty bottle against the metal of his boat.

"Yep, this is life *urp* here," he said as he stabbed downwards on the nearest arm- a battle that looked for all the world like a very bizarre take on the classic battle between Captain Nemo and the squid.

Underwater tunnels - Clarifications

Sans explained he couldn't be a corpse in a rather confusing fashion leading Curly to conclude he must be a ghost like Lewis. Except Caro explained his death likely referred to the fact in this city people just respawn elsewhere when they die. Curly wasn't quite sure what to make of that, but she didn't have much time to consider that as a sudden green shimmer behind Sans revealed itself to be a tall, nervous looking young man in a wide brimmed hat. Curly was slightly startled by the sight, but between Sans' announcing he'd been there and his demeanor it seemed clear the mage meant no harm at the moment.

She wanted to be annoyed at Sans for his insistence that he was right about her being a soulless machine, but remembering what Miss Tairee said about everyone being from other universes helped her keep from reacting beyond a frustrated sigh. There was no way he could know what the other machines had done 10 years ago, so being uptight about that wouldn't do anything. "Yeah, I was at the beach city yesterday, visited the library just long enough to get dragged off to the cinema. If we're all going there anyway we might as well go together" Curly said, and nodded to Cole before adding "Nice to see you"

Underwater Tunnels - faux pas

Curly looked none too pleased about Sans' repeated comments about her soulless state, he wondered if that was a bit of a sourspot for her, after all who knows how her world was like. Caro also immediatelly killed his fun by explaining what exactly he meant with his earlier misleading moment, sadly, so he wouldn't be able to mess with her anymore.

"so you came here yesterday huh, i guess it's a pretty misleading day for you to arrive in. then again caro and i both arrived in similar circunstances." He shrugged. "so, now that you're tagging along for the ride, how about we go ahead and see if we can catch ride back to the surface?"

With that, he once again resumed walking towards the docking bay, he had been distracted enough that he didn't even realize that he was still carrying his brother's scarf in one of his hands.

Wicked Hermit, Plague Knight thought. Nice title, though does she consider herself to be different from a witch, or are the term interchangible for her? Seiga than told Yoshika about the obvious incapability of actually diving at this depth. "Oh I definitely agree," the knight added. "For one thing, without the proper spells, your body may be horribly crushed by the sheer weight of the ocean's depth and completely freeze to death before you can even drown. In my universe, only a handful of people know how to do the spells needed to survive outside of shelter this far down, and even then it is very expensive and only works in salt water - "

It was then Ara showed up. "Ah, hello stranger!" Plague Knight greeted her. Seiga then introduced everyone, the knight waving to her when his name was called up. "We are currently traveling to the library. You wish to join us?"

Cole carefully raised his head enough to look at Curly, then back down, fidgeting his fingers. "...n-nice to meet y-you too..."

He looked at her again, then turned to wander after Sans, speaking to the skeleton in what he clearly thought was a low voice. "There are a lot of people here who have things that aren't souls, but are like souls. Do you think she could be one of those? I met a girl who was a machine before but I could feel her just like she was alive."

The Library

Tairee repeated that Jackson hadn't actually broken any of the rules and pointed out that, justified or not, Rex had just murdered a person.

"I didn't mean to punch him so hard, ok? He just mentioned Cole's death and I lost my cool. He already died twice while I was fighting with him and I even bumped into Mary and Kelsey before I knew she had killed him a third time"

Rex tried to push that depressing thought off his head when Tairee continued explaining how to access the underwater portion of the city. Seems like he just needed to find a building that was floating and simply walk to get to someplace underwater.

"Guess I'm out of here, then"

Ripjaws nodded to Rick and Morty, then the newcomers, obviously disinterested in Rick and Morty. Until what looked like the Krakken's garish uncle came bursting out of the water and attacked the boat.

"Hang on!" Ripjaws shouted, swimming down and towards one of the tentacles that was attempting to lash at the people on the boat. He swam like a bullet through the water. Ripjaws then leapt up onto the tentacle, slashing at it with his claws. He bit into it with his razor-sharp teeth, attempting to make it release its grip on the boat.

Still rowing your boat. Don't hope for a hit. Almost to the library.

Gon kept rowing and rowing, relying on the near misses.

"Almost there to the library..."

A cannon ball was launched, hitting mere inches from his boat. The impact made Gon fall down, but he managed to make himself fall down on the boat's floor instead of going overboard.

"Dammit..."

Gon fired his shotgun after he reloaded it while he saw the pirates reloading their cannons. He wondered if anyone would see the ship.

Underwater Tunnels - Back to exploration, in more ways than one

"The cinema, huh? That's right, that was the reward for yesterday's challenge ... That was supposed to be a calm day, but so much still happened that we never got around to checking that out. At least we got enjoy the beach at the end of the day," Caro spoke softly and pensievely, more to herself and Sans than to Curly.

After Sans replied to Curly, she tried to shake that mood off and spoke up more normally, "Yeah, he's right ... Not that you haven't most certainly noticed this, but this city is always pretty crazy, ever changing from day to day. There had been only one other day with a change so drastic like this, but something always does. Even on the day where Sans and I arrived, where the city was as most normal as it can be, our changes all got changed ... But anyway, for example, usually, this city is not surrounded by a beach, but rather somehow floats in the middle of a void."

She took a longer look at the entrance to the docking bay and said, "Yeah, we may as well just get going. I just hope that we can manage to somehow pilot whatever is there ... "

She and Fried then followed after the others. While they were walking, Cole asked Sans something, seemingly intending to be discrete, but it was still more than loud enough for her and presumably also Curly to hear.

She hesitated for a bit, since despite the result, the spirit probably hadn't meant for her to hear it. At the time, she thought that could really contribute to that discussion.

So after another moment, she carefully walked up to the pair and quietly spoke, "Well, if I may say something about that ... There are people from all sorts of realities gathered in this place, so it makes sense that not all beings would have similar souls or equivalents ... Even back home, there are many kinds of people that could be considered artificial too. There are Unison Devices, constructed beings, similar in nature to Kerykeion here, but more advanced and taking a human form, though usually much smaller," She took a quick, hopefully barely noticable glance at Curly, before turning back to them and continuing, "There is also an old teammate and friend of mine, who is not much different from Curly. She looks perfectly human, but she is a cyborg, a mostly a machine inside. In both of those cases, I'm not sure if there is a regular soul, but there's probably something similar. In the end, it doesn't really matter what is the case though. They are all people just the same regardless."

After that, as they continued to walk, she noticed something clutched in Sans, hand. A red scarf, a rather familiar looking one ... Was it the one that Papyrus had been wearing in that picture Sans had showed her and Zelda. And it also seemed to be covered in dust ... In any other situation, she mostly wouldn't have thought much of that, but knowing what she knew about Papyrus' fate and what Sans had said about had happened when monsters died, it was hard to ignore the horrible implications of that dust.

She hesitated for a while, not sure if she should bring it up, before finally, with her eyes still mostly trained on the scarf, saying, "Um, Sans ... Is that ... What I think it is?"

Eve|Boat| Is it Kracken or Kracken?

Eve followed Ben to the boat, meeting Morty's rather drunk grandfather. And then meeting a purple horse-ish thing. And an orange personage. Choosing to ponder the incredible scope of species throughout the universe later, Eve pulled herself onto the boat, and dropped her mermaid form.

She was planning to introduce herself. However, that plan was rather dashed by the appearance of the Kraken. She briefly glowed, and her hair took the form of nanoblades. These slashed with impressive speed at the tentacles, slicing at those which threatened the occupants of the boat.

DAY 11

Some Ways Down - On the Nature of Dreams, and Awkward Reunions, and Whether or Not Androids Dream of Electric Sheep or Mimigas or Whatever

He didn't realize he could dream. Maybe it was a unique property of the librarian's replica of the dream sand, inducing good dreams in those who normally wouldn't dream at all, but that still meant it was possible, if only in that specific circumstance.

Either way, he had to thank her. It had been a nice one. He'd gotten to introduce Jack to Cayenne, which resulted in shenanigans culminating in an incident involving a mix of snow cones and Blazing Inferno Hellfire Sauce that came in handy while investigating rumors of a mysterious automaton that had come to life, who looked suspiciously like Curly and for some reason was a magical girl fighting crime in the shadows alongside Ara and Sophie. Lucky.

But he could mull on that later. Right now he was busy wandering aimlessly, as he had been doing for a while now, staring at the photo of himself and Vivi, whose face had appeared numerous times during that wonderful dream, always either marveling over some suspected clue as she was wont to do, or sketching a weird diagram that wouldn't make sense in any other context, or curling up into his side. He sighed. He couldn't see her again from here, that was for sure, and while it was probably best to set the thought aside for as long as he remained here, he just couldn't help himself...

No, he needed an inopportune encounter with a wall for that. At least it worked; it forced him to go back to paying attention to his surroundings again after an overly-long time wallowing in self-pity to the exclusion of all else.

After muttering something to the tune of Who's bright idea was it to make my universe one where ghosts can't phase? he shook his head, returned the locket to his spot, and decided it was probably best to find someone. Conveniently, turning a corner revealed the sound of voices, one of which he knew to be that of recently-unveiled android Curly (heck yeah, a familiar face!), two of which were unfamiliar, and a fourth that he identified as...oh.

Well, this would be awkward.

Hah, p-play it cool, Lewis. It's not like you don't have someone to back you up if things get awkward. Not making a scene can't be that hard, can it? he tried to reassure himself as his stiff and clearly forced body language while floating in on the current exchange made his anxiety toward the situation obvious.

"Curly?"

Underwater Tunnels - They remodel fast

Curly almost asked what Caro meant about a challenge, but her comment soon drifted to something more pensive about how yesterday had gone for them. Though the girl soon turned back to informing Curly about how the city usually was."Hard to imagine this place is a "city", especially with those scrap heaps wandering around... But I guess there's not much point standing around"

With that said, Curly started to open the docking bay door, pausing just before pushing it all the way open when hough Cole had spoken up to talk to Sans about souls, and a different mechanical girl that 'felt' alive... And pretty soon Caro had more to add. Though the mention of a cyborg that looked human but was mostly machine sounded caught her ear, Curly was quickly distracted with a different familiar voice. "Lewis? I was wondering if you were down here somewhere! How's the water treating you?" She added the last part to tease at his slightly stiff body language, seeing as he didn't like to have his hair out at the theater.

Underwater Tunnels - memento of a lost soul

The topic of souls seemed to have interested Cole who was less than subtle of his questioning of it, seeing as Caro soon made her own statement about the topic. Sans wasn't quite sure of how to structure his thoughts on the matter into something that could be easily understood, souls were mysterious things even in his own world, mixing in with what other worlds might think of souls just made things even more complicated.

The thought soon got derailed once Caro asked about something and drawing Sans' attention to the scarf he was still holding, she probably recognized it from the photo he had shown her yesterday.

"yeah, this scarf is the only thing of my brother i managed to salvage after the kid got him. i've had it with me since i got in this city but i kept it stored since i didn't want it to get damaged. luckily those crazy robots didn't get to do anything to it," he said, looking back at it just to make a quick to see if it had gotten any damage.

A new voice called out for Curly, leading Sans to spot a... flaming skeleton? That sounded familiar, it was still interesting to see another skeleton in town though even if this one looked quite different from the standard.

"friend of yours?" he asked Curly

A boardwalk, somewhere.

Sophie leaned back a little, surprised by the woman's sudden outburst. ...Is this 'Corn' a person, or...? She frowned again, this time in equal parts concern and confusion. Owing to her relative naivete, it was Sophie herself who usually had to be comforted by one of her friends when she felt like she had made a mistake. She had never really tried comforting others, unable to offer much help other than a gentle hand on their shoulder and a quiet show of support. That doesn't mean I shouldn't try, though, right?...

"You cook?" she asked, latching onto something the woman said that she was at least familiar with - and hopefully steering the conversation away from whatever thoughts were embittering the woman. "I'd like to try it sometime. How long have you been cooking?"

Cole didn't completely understand all the words Caro used to describe the people she knew, but he suspected she was agreeing with him that just because a soul didn't feel quite right, it was still probably a soul. Of course, Cole had no idea if what he felt from people were souls or not, or what it meant that there were beings in this city that he didn't read...honestly he didn't even know how his powers did work. No one back home did, after all, he was the only one like him who ever was.

Uncomfortable comparisons to the bird demon didn't quite escape his mind, but he tried not to dwell on those. Caro and Sans had told him he wasn't like that creature. They wouldn't lie to him about something like that.

Caro and Sans were discussing the scarf in Sans's hand, and he looked towards it, distracted for a moment. It had belonged to Sans's brother, that tall skeleton he remembered seeing in visions from before, the very nice one that he liked, from what Cole had been able to see of him through Sans's memories. It was sad, how many of those memories that were supposed to be happy, but were covered up in pain now. Cole hoped he could figure out some way to help.

He'd almost forgotten the new stranger with them, sidetracked as he'd gotten himself, but then a...familiar voice spoke, and his eyes widened, Cole whirling around to catch sight of the larger skeleton, not the nice one in Sans's memories but the one who burned and had asked and asked while taking away the amulet from him.

He didn't say anything at all, just vanishing from sight immediately, this time without even the sound of footfalls to direct anyone as to where he might be going.

It took Zelda a little while to find the bags of monster food, given that she didn't remember where she'd put the one she had and didn't see where Sans and Caro had put theirs. Fortunately, when she did find them they were more or less untouched, though it was anyone's guess as to whether that was because food was plentiful yesterday or no one else saw it as edible.

She rummaged through the bag herself, eventually settling on one of the sword-shaped sandwiches. She then made her way back to where her other belongings were gathered and sat down. She set her harp aside, then picked up her walkie-talkie and fiddled with the channel dial. She was a little perplexed when nothing she did made sound come out of the thing, but then she remembered Miss Tairee turning the volume down on hers the previous day.

Some more fiddling later, and she managed to turn the sound back on. She turned the dial to channel 11 before setting the walkie-talkie down and opting to just listen in. If she didn't hear anything of note, she'd eventually turn it to channel 5. While she was waiting, she started eating the sandwich and reading through the Chaos rulebook once more. The sensation of her food instantly vanishing when she swallowed was still strange. Furthermore, eating it somehow made her feel a little stronger.

"You're welcome to help yourself to the food if you're hungry," she said to Twilight assuming the pony was still with her after all of this, "Just be careful. Some of it's made of weird things."

Underwater base

Carefully, Garrett stood up and re-entered the room, this time taking special care not to walk into the turret's line of sight. Luckily whoever created the device gave it a major handicap, as it revolved slowly in a predictable arc, making it quite trivial to get from one end of the room to the other by carefully staying behind the gun.

At the other end was another door outfitted with a valve, which Garrett quickly opened, slipped inside, and just in case shut the door behind himself. He was in some sort of a deep shaft, reaching several floors upwards and terminating with a square of sky at the top. He was standing on a steel platform, affixed to a rusty rail that ran the length of the shaft. This was obviously an elevator much like those he knew from back home, and there was even a familiar red button on the panel attached to the lift, which Garrett pressed. The lift rumbled and, with a great deal of racket, started to move.

Squid Battle!

"Ha! Finally, something to fight!" Ignoring Wander's protests, Sylvia leapt for the nearest tentacle and punched it as hard as she could—which was really dang hard. Once she'd knocked it off the boat, she started to target the main body section, grabbing onto a tentacle and trying to climb it while punching away the ones that got in her way, aiming for the numerous eyes.

"Ben, is it?" she cried, sputtering as a third tentacle knocked her down into the water. She popped back up, even more drenched but unfazed, and climbed back into the swaying boat to attempt her climb again. "Thanks for the assist!" He looked a little creepy, sure, but she'd seen plenty of folks while traveling. And anyone who'd come out of nowhere to defend her opposite side of the boat was okay by her.

Meanwhile: Wander sat cross-legged in the center of the boat, hunkered down to avoid the occasional splash of water or squid tentacle. His brain was in overdrive, trying to deduce how to end the fight peacefully. His eyes lit up. "I know! Even giant squids love fruit baskets!" He whipped off his hat and dug around in it, expecting the hat to work its magic and conjure up a fruit basket for him, but instead what he came up with was his banjo. With a quick frown, he put the instrument back inside and rustled around again, now coming up with his and Sylvia's bottle of orbble juice, the other physical item that he liked to store inside. He put that back in too, tried again, and ended up with the banjo. Then the orbble juice. Banjo orbble juice banjo orbble juice banjo orbble juice, all while Sylvia and the others yelled and wrestled things. Finally, he examined the hat all over. It looked fine, but the hat's brim seemed to be forming the shape of a confused frown. It had no idea what was going on either.

"Sylvia? I think my hat's sick!"

"Aaaaaaaaah!" Sylvia went sailing past and landed in the water again.

Underwater Tunnels - Unfortunate implications

"Yeah, I guess you're right ... Right now this place seems more like a labyrinth than a city. Which is only more reason for us to move along and escape via whatever vehicle is there, because otherwise, who knows how long it would take us to climb back via these tunnels?"

The conversation about souls didn't yield much, which wasn't surprisingly, since it was probably a rather complex topic. Instead, Sans confirmed her suspision regarding the scarf. "Yeah, I thought as much. I remembered it from that picture ... You might as well store it away again. I hope we don't run into anything while trying to get to our objective, but in anycase, next time we might not be so lucky," she commented.

Someone called to out to Curly and when turned around to see who it was, she saw a large skeleton with what seemed to be hair made of flames. That ringed strangely familiar, though she couldn't recall exactly from where at the moment.

At that same moment, she spotted Cole suddenly vanishing again, but he seemed to making a point of not making at any sounds, so there was no way to tell where he was going. "Cole? Where are you? What happened?"

At that moment, with Cole disappearing at the exact moment the newcomer, apparently named Lewis, had appeared, she made the connection in her mind and remembered exactly where she had heard about him. It was a bit hard to recall because Cole had said it in the middle of his run on retelling of his day up to then, back at the supermarket yesterday, but once she did, she became rather concerned. With a rather upset tone, she said to Lewis, "Wait a minute. I know who you are, or at least I know of you. You were the one who was harrassing Cole yesterday."

Calamareye

The giant yellow squid twisted one tentacle in the water as it tried to get a lock on the small grey-green thing that was currently trying to get between it and its prey - and the small meaty things currently ensconced within the hard metal construction. As Ben bit down on the tentacle, a cloud of gaseous, foul-smelling green mist erupted from the wound. The krakeyen jerked back the stump of its wounded arm, its eyes rolling madly as it sent two more of its arms swinging towards Ripjaws, one trying to coil around the fish alien while the other snaked towards Rick, Eve, and Wander.

"Shit! Get down, Morty!" Rick stabbed the nearest tentacle in one of its many eyeballs with his broken beer bottle, causing the arm to flinch momentarily- and then Eve's hair glowed to life .

"What the hell?!" screamed Morty as Eve's Medusa-esque assault on the overgrown cephalopod shredded a second arm, causing it to fall apart into a series of yellow, meaty chunks. "Wh-wh-why do you have guns in your hair?!"

"That's not important *urp* right now!" shouted Rick as he grappled with a third arm, which had crept up from behind the group on the boat, ramming one fist into an eyeball and causing the arm to squirm in pain. "The important thing is that all this shit is I-" another fist hit a patch of slick yellow skin, with a sound not unlike someone punching a wet sack of Jell-O "-I just put this thing together and now it's totally gross with blood and guts and shit, and Wander's magic *urp* magic hat that-" Rick struggled to stay on the boat as the squeyed attempted to drag him overboard "-probably produces a comedically appropriate item for any given circumstance isn't working anymore, so I can't even get a mop or sponge or- or-" Rick paused his furious rant for a moment as Morty desparately tried to disentangle his grandfather from the yellow arm in some kind of bizarre tug of war. "I mean I don't wanna be the guy that hasta ask for help here but-"

At any rate, the multi-pronged onslaught on the squid's many arms had slowed down its attempt to shove Rick's watercraft wholesale into its rotating mouth - clicking in frustration, it sent another blinking, eye-covered arm towards Sylvia, the largest eye on the tip of the tentacle glaring at the Zbornak.
