I once heard that "Prisons are for people who do bad things." The person who said this was being sarcastic but it does raise a question for me. I know not everyone who goes to prison is necessarily bad but what do you think about false accusations and how it affects the process?

Looking it up on Wikipedia, according to The Innocence Project, apparently 2.5%-5% of all prisoners in the US are innocent. This seems like a pretty plausible number to me.

There was a similar study done that said it was something like 11.some percent of Virginian Prisoners in the 70's were innocent, but that seems more limited in scope there.

I assume that number isn't counting the prisoners waiting for their trail to conclude because they couldn't pay for bail?

I'm not certain but I'd assume so, yes.

What about those that took a plea deal so they could get free on "time served" after waiting in prison for their trail to conclude?

Then I'd say that 2,5-5 percent figure feels rather conservative.

So with the death of OJ Simpsons, I was surprised to learn that the guy had actually been acquited of the double murder in 95?

Him being guilty is treated as such an obvious fact by everyone that I was sure he was condemned (well, he was, but for something else apparently). What’s the evidence exactly?

OJ Simpson was acquitted but it's often seen as a massive failure of the justice system.

In particular, afterwards he wrote book called "If I Did It" that's very easy to interpret as a Sarcastic Confession if not bragging about getting away with murder.

Yeah, Simpson's acquittal is pretty much universally seen as a gross injustice.

And he was found liable for the deaths in a Civil Trial afterwards.

I believe at least one juror has since admitted that they knew O.J. was guilty but found him innocent as revenge for four white cops who tried to lynch Rhodey King have been found innocent. The verdict was a big moment for many African Americans as it showed that some black people could enjoy the previously white-only privilege of getting away with blatant murder.

There’s also the fact that the police were asked during the trial if they had planted any evidence or falsified police records and they declined to answer on the ground of self-incrimination.

Yeah. It's not that he was innocent - everyone knew damn well he was guilty, including the jury. However, the prosecution and police were both inept and corrupt. In the American system, the fact that Simpson was treated unfairly by the authorities is more important than his actual guilt, especially because he had a lawyer who was able to take advantage of that - Johnnie Cochran specialized in going to the mat with Dirty Cops. However, he still got taken to the cleaners when he was civilly tried for wrongful death (where the above issues don't matter).

Huh, so, one court decided that he wasn’t guilty but another that he was responsible for the deaths? How does that work?

Civil court has different standards for guilt and different possible sentences.

The burden of proof on the prosecution is rather higher in criminal court.

It is sometimes debated that it wasn't OJ who was the killer. He was just the convenient target. This was partly based on some info from a PI who reportedly did some extensive long-term digging and contests that it wasn't OJ but his eldest son who was the killer. On the surface, it is plausible. He put out a book about it around 2014 or so with details.

@Lyendith, M84: Also, in criminal trials, the state is the prosecutor while in civil trials, the attorneys work for the plaintiff.

Accordingly, OJ was able to convincingly go Blaming "The Man" in the criminal trial, but in the civil trial he was up against his wife's pissed-off family.

Four law enforcement officers were killed, and another four wounded in a gun battle in Charlotte, North Carolina.

They went to serve an arrest warrant on a convicted felon possessing an illegal firearm, and upon arriving at his house, the man opened fire.

The law enforcement officers returned fire and killed the man in the garden, but two more people started shooting from inside the house.

The SWAT used armored cars to break into the house and arrest the two (some said it was a woman and his 17-year-old son, others said it was two women? This part is unclear)

Double Post, a man in north-east London, brandished a "samurai-like sword" and started attacking people randomly in the street for 22 minutes before the police arrested him.

Five people were injured, and sadly, one of them (a 14-year-old boy) died from his injuries.

The reasons for the attack, are still unknown, though the police said that it was not " terror-related" and probably not targeted at any specific person.
