The way Racattack phrased it, it seems more like what detractors want is a full ditch of all aspects seen in BOTW, rather than an installment that reunites the best of both worlds.

I didn't mean for my "And that is why any of us hoping for a future Zelda game that uses the old dungeon formula may just have to settle for remakes/re-releases for the foreseeable future" statement to be seen as disgust towards the open-world formula of BOTW/TOTK. I'm sure some people feel that way, but I greatly enjoyed BOTW and it is in my Top 5 Zelda games, and I've loved what little I've played of TOTK so far. It was more just a casual statement that I have fondness for the more structured and linear approach of the series, like a number of other people do, and that the overwhelming success of BOTW/TOTK means Nintendo won't see much need to put resources towards making wholly new classic Zelda games.

And that's totally fine! It kinda sucks, but at the end of the day, there are so many games that I can play which perfectly scratch that old-school Zelda itch. If the only Zelda games going forward that use the old style are remakes and remasters, then sure, why not? There are enough games in the series that could use a modern touch-up. And I don't even think that new games in the style are a total no-go. I'm convinced that once Nintendo opens their new building and staffs up, we could see a second team put out some fun top-down Zelda games in the same way Mario has both 2D and 3D teams. And that isn't even touching upon the fact that they are trying to better merge the two styles together with TOTK and will likely continue experimenting in order to get that perfect balance that satisfies both the overwhelming number of new fans and the old guard that cut their teeth on the likes of ALTTP or OOT.

Ultimately, Zelda is still fun, and they found a formula that not only reinvigorated it and made me see the series in a new way, but also made it appeal to a bigger audience than ever before and bring more fans into one of my favourite game franchises. I could never be pissed about that.

Also it's not like they didn't release games that weren't open world for Zelda. Sure one was a remaster, but the game before was a full on remake that it might as well be a new game.

[up][up]I understand your points better now, thanks. [tup]

Like I mentioned before, I have loved playing both SS and BOTW (the only Zelda game I didn't enjoy as much was PH), so my posts weren't meant to be an attack of the former in favor of the latter, or vice versa, but rather a remark on why the latter was designed the way it is. I have a bit of a bad experience with fandoms that pull the It's Popular, Now It Sucks! cards for other series' games, such as Monster Hunter (in the specific case of World and Rise) and Fire Emblem (in the specific case of Awakening), hence my prior reaction.

Back on topic, I really want to play the game ASAP, but I'm not sure when I'll be able to buy it. I don't see myself avoiding spoilers until Christmas, so I hope I can get it sooner than that. X_x

Genuinely curious what those are. I haven't really seen anything close to the Zelda formula outside of a few 2D indie games, and even the most faithful of those tend to take many liberties.

And yeah... as someone who doesn't find the BotW/TotK style very enjoyable at all, I am a little miffed that it's most likely killed off traditional 3D Zeldas. It feels like some other game pulled a Kill and Replace on my favorite series, and Nintendo doesn't care about the dedicated fanbase who loved Zelda as it was because the new games make bank with a mostly new fanbase.

Edit: And I consider a true happy compromise between the two styles effectively impossible. Sure, you can add some more classic Zelda elements to it, as TotK already has. But there's an inherent tug of war between linearity and openness, you simply can't have more of one without detracting from the other. They could never add Metroidvania style items that are not just helpful, but necessary to progress and reach new secrets, without damaging the openness of BotW. I like seeing a chest and not having the tools to get it yet, wondering what would enable me to reach it. A BotW fan finds it infuriating they can't simply climb up to it with enough stamina, instead having to find something specific.

Oh, so it's literally called Mortal Kombat 1? Interesting.

[up][up]Again, it was SS which killed the standard 3D fformula (not quality-wise, but reception-wise). But it's evident that we'll have to Agree to Disagree by this point.

You mean a BOTW fan finds it infuriating they can't find objects to manipulate physics to get reach the chest, and then some.

I better finish the e-Reader levels of Advance 4 before the other games arrive (the latest one I finished was the one with the invisible blocks that you can see with the Tanooki statue, it's incredibly cool and I wish that gimmick was added to Mario Maker 2).

If Super Mario Advanced isn't blowing out my Switch's speakers I'm refunding my Expansion Pass.

In all seriousness I can't wait to play it! I always wanted to beat it but never got around to it as a kid.

For reference, I believe the GBA version of Yoshi's Island has the most substantial changes due to 8 new levels. Super Mario Bros. 2 is next due to new bosses, and the changes to World are mostly minor. Main thing I can think of is Dragon Coins being added to every level for 100% completion nuts, though that might have been an All-Stars addition.

I really prefer the All Stars version of World, but I guess Advanced is the most up-to-date.

I can actually see people flip flopping on Advanced 1 vs All-Stars, due to the former having more Qo L improvements even over the latter.

Despite not having played it, Advanced 2 is definitely the worst version, mainly because of the soundtrack being butchered and little to no additional content.

I haven't played it either, but I hear negative opinions on Advanced 3.

Advanced 4 is now the best version, mainly because of the insane amount of content the eReader gave it.

Heck yeah, more ways to play arcade Mario Bros.

(Joking aside, I feel like it's not a great look when over half the games in the app that have multiplayer are all the same game. Playing the Advance versions of these games oughta be cool, though.)

I still wish for an All-Stars remaster that has the visual and audio fidelity of the SNES versions but some of the expanded features from the GBA versions, like the extra levels from 3 and 4, or the hard mode from 1.

Anyway, kind of an underwhelming set of games. We already have them on the SNES and NES apps. Gimme Wario Land 4 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Oh I forgot about the hard mode for Advance 1. I also just remembered a Yoshi Egg hunt thing, too. It's more expansive that I thought.

I played the Advance 3 version of Yoshi's Island a lot as a kid and imo it's still a good version. I think the soundtrack holds up despite GBA crunch and like I said you get extra levels. A couple are actually pretty hard, and Secret 5 is unique in that you spawn next to the exit gate and are expected to scour around a labyrinthine layout to find everything.

The Yoshi egg hunt is the hard mode, it replaces the mushrooms with Yoshi eggs so you can't get any extra health.
