My guess is the Pokemon either know about the cameras and deliberately wait them out, or just wreck them or find a blind spot to do their thing.

As silly as it sounds to say, I mean, there's not really any evidence that Pokemon mate in the same way real-world animals do. Maybe a baby does spawn out of nothing when two compatible Pokemon are in close proximity. Like, Arceus is somewhere up there and notices that a Muk and a Gardevoir are in a daycare, and he goes, "Yeah, I'll just make a genetic combination of those two while nobody is watching and plop it right there, inside an egg that isn't really an egg."

One of my most wanted Pokémon is a Legendary that's just a stork. It sees two Pokémon who like each other enough to want a baby, so it creates an egg for them and delivers it in secret.

It'd definitely explain HSOWA.

A stork Legendary that brings all of the baby Pokemon in the world would be a hilarious way to completely deconfirm Pokemon having sex, and I now really want that, too.

Great I'm now imagining the stork from Dumbo being a legendary Pokemon

I prefer to think most Pokemon mate but canon doesn't support that. My headcanon is that they do some sort of Mating Dance like in Viva Pinata and an egg pops up.

I suppose it's possible that pokemon don't have sex, though I've always felt that Occam's Razor strongly leaned towards the notion that they did. They just mercifully avoid going into any details for obvious reasons.

Having said that, though, I could see something like Pokemon using external fertilization (the female lays an egg, the male then fertilizes it), and that would completely get around Skitty-Wailord problems.

External fertilization would explain a lot.

If the thing about eggs not really being eggs is true though, then that means they don't do external fertilization. Unless there's a magic explanation like Arcues zapping the eggs into existance, then the cradle idea implies that Pokemon actually do mate, give birth, then make a shell around the newborn, all while no humans are watching.

I feel like the concept of Pokemon mating is something that ever long-term Pokemon fan will eventually wind up questioning.

... Why the hell did they add Pokemon Breeding in the first place? I hate it! I hate the min-maxing people do to get the perfect pokemon. I hate the layers of obfuscation with the stat values that the game doesn't bother mentioning. I hate the little baby pokemon that largely exist for marketing.

But most of all I hate the implications.

DoorCurtain Since: Nov, 2017

[up]I despise that breeding wasn't just a cute way to get baby Pokémon and ended up being a convoluted process for giving Pokémon moves they normally can't learn.

I despise EVEN MORE the fact that, because some Pokémon you catch don't have good IVs, then the only way to guarantee better ones (until Sun and Moon) is to constantly spend hours and hours and hours breeding them to get an egg with perfect stats.

It's PokéUgenics and a horrible barrier to entry for advanced competitive play, especially considering that if IVs weren't what Game Freak put in the game to make sure the Squirtle you get is different from your friend's Squirtle, then they could have come up with something more fitting for the series' messages about loving the Pokémon you have because it's unique, and therefore your OWN Squirtle. It all feels like a big lie when you look up online what IVs are for the first time and how they work, and the crushing realization that you might have a Squirtle that is outright worse than your friend's Squirtle the moment you chose it.

I blame the competitive community for doing Pokemon eugenics, not Game Freak. No-one's forcing them to have biologically perfect specimens, but they're committing crimes against nature to have them anyway.

GF implemented and incentivized the system. And they've had many chances to to fix it if they wanted to.

Most serious players just hack pre-made Pokemon into their games because dealing with Gamefreak's convoluted breeding mechanics is a waste of time masquerading as depth.

No-one's forcing them to have biologically perfect specimens, but they're committing crimes against nature to have them anyway.

Gamefreak is forcing it, though. If you don't have perfect IVs (whether that's six 31's or some specific Hidden Power setup), you're playing sub-optimally. That wouldn't be terrible if IVs didn't have such a strong effect, but values for relevant stats can vary by a massive 10-20% depending on your luck with IVs. For Speed in particular, it only takes a stat difference of 1 speed point to determine turn order for same-priority moves, meaning a single IV has a massive impact on the outcome of a matchup.

It's a horrible system and they really ought to get rid of it somehow.

Clearly, the solution is to make one point of Speed not matter as much.

That's missing the core of the issue, which is that all the mechanics that influence the results of breeding and your stats are needlessly tedious to work with in order to get optimal Pokemon to battle with.
