UAE Naval Vessel Reportedly Attacked By Houthi Rebels Off Yemeni Coast.
Some reports suggest the ship was in fact hit and that there are KIA.
(It's my thread so I'll quad post if I want to. )
US Intel Says China To Have Railgun Armed Ships By 2025.
Yeah, no. The pics everyone keep waving around are that of a mock up at best or a conventional heavy artillery gun.
Given its Germany... whos rifles melt when they are shot, most of there Air Wing is not capable of flying... among many many other issues.
I am going to guess "it was about 3 years behind on maintenance"
OR it could've simply been the case of Seaman Snuffy (or whatever the German equivalent is) not putting enough duct tape and 550 cord on it in preparation to fire.
Someone skipped the preparatory step of greasing the missile to make sure it would slide freely in the tube.
I mean, come on, this isn't rocket science!
Well, OK, a bit.
Lube everything that goes in a tube.

Inter arma enim silent legesSINKEX Time!
Target: USS Racine (LST-1191)
Ordnance used: (4x) Type 12 ASM's (JMSDF), Naval Strike Missile (US Army use), RGM-84 Harpoon (fired from submarine USS Olympia), Mk 48 torpedo (fired from submarine USS Olympia)
Video:
I was surprised to see how many fragmentation exit holes there were. That looked ugly. It looked like the US Army fired four NSM's not just one. That poor ship would have been a bad day to be inside it.
Still the torpedo was the worst part and you can see it break the ships back.

Who watches the watchmen? Most of the weapons had practice warheads rather than live ones. The primary purpose of the exercise was to practice their joint C2, note that the trigger-pullers on part of this op were Japanese troops working under US Army coordination. Stars and Stripes notes that had this been a real situation, all of that rain would have hit the ship within minutes of each other and with full warheads, while this was drawn out over a few hours so they could evaluate as they went.
See knowing they had practice heads makes me cringe even more. Live heads may have been a lot worse.
Who watches the watchmen?A veritable cornucopia of whoopass dropped right on their heads.
Given most of the stuff hit laterally it appears, that's more along the lines of kidney shots than dropped on their heads.
Even then I was surprised by the amount of pass through fragmentation. Makes me wonder if we can create a diving high super sonic low hyper sonic kinetic penetrator.
Who watches the watchmen?Ah, Stuff Blowing Up - this was a Take That! to the Chinese Navy. Having the US Army fire those Naval Strike Missiles was the Army acknowledging that they need to play well with others in the next Pacific Dust Up.
All night at the computer, cuz people ain't that great. I keep to myself so I won't be on The First 48Regarding the Russian naval parade... Sigh.

"Learn as if you will live forever, live as if you will die tomorrow."Soo I have been doing more studying on WWII, and I have noticed a thing every single one of our carriers had a diffrent paint job for there aircraft.
Kaga was the only one with the pure white with red markings that seems to be the default people think of when they think IJN... every one else had green tops, Zuikaku was more of an olive color compared to every one else's forest green or teal, where as Akagi had way more red in her paint scheme then any of the others.
And this wasn't an "over time they changed" thing, these color schemes all existed side by side in the same operations....
And I am just wondering is there any practical reasons that every one had there own paint jobs? Or is it just kind of a thing that happened on its own?

The planes or the ships? In either case, I'd assume ease of recognition, especially when multiple carriers are operating together, wouldn't want the pilots getting mixed up.
I'm reminded of that one pilot who landed on the wrong carrier and got his plane spray painted for his trouble
Oh really when?The airplanes.
As you can see they all have greatly different paint colors.
Also would it be a bad guess to say that the reason for the bright red tail on Soryu's pictured airplane is that its the flight lead? And it is there so they know how to follow? Because it seems kind of weird to specify otherwise... and that seems like a thing that would be done.
Those are pretty distinct paint schemes. I would say it is to aid both pilots and the ships in IDing their craft.

Who watches the watchmen?Yeah, I’m gonna guess it’s for visual ID purposes, likely with a dash of morale on the side. Distinct paint schemes for visual ID were common (invasion stripes are a notable example) and I don’t believe the IJN operated any IFF systems so they would have needed them.
They should have sent a poet.Yeah, it occurs to me a bit lamely that it might have been purely for morale purposes, like the Allied practice of painting shark teeth on the noses of fighters.
Put it this way, in World War Two, both the US Navy and the Japanese were more likely to run out of planes than they were to run out of bombs and torpedoes.
This is what happened to Spruance after Midway. He didn't have sufficient aircraft to pursue Yamamoto, he was down one fleet carrier and most of his aircraft otherwise. If he cannibalized everything off Hornet (and Yorktown's surviving planes) he might've had close to a full load for Enterprise alone.
