I actually do prefer the "choose whatever you want" like a streaming service structure. Especially if I had never played them before. I can see merit in the "pay it, you own it" method, and the NSO stuff hasn't exactly been executed the best, but there's a reason streaming works, you can just try playing something or watching something whatever you want whenever. The world is your oyster, for a small sub fee. It just has to be done right, that's the real key here.

Call me old school, but I prefer the “buying a game” method to streaming. Convenience isn’t a concern of mine as I prefer collecting retro games, and accessibility isn’t a problem for me as I keep my old consoles around in “ready to plug in and use” or just straight up plugged in condition.

While I think the Wii U version is better, I spent the most amount of time playing the Wii VC. While I didn't really grab many on the Wii U, and the ones I did get I mostly played after the Switch was already out. Like Partners in Time, and the two GBA Metroids.

On the Wii I played a lot of games like Paper Mario, Super Mario RPG, FFVI, FFIV, Chrono Trigger and ALLTP for the first time though that service.

It was also before I got into checking video game news online as much, so most of those I went in without expectations aside from a general idea they were good games which gives me a very nostalgic feeling thinking about it hindsight.

Especially with the SNES games. At one point I got an old CRT someone was giving away and I hooked up in my room. So one winter I used to spend Friday nights playing SNES games until late all snugged up under blankets. That's how I played both Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger.

Poor 3DS. Nobody remembers it has a VC as well.

Objectively, I wouldn't call the NSO the best, but it's the only one I have been able to access and enjoy, so...

[up] I actually bought more 3DS Virtual Console games than I ever did on the Wii and Wii U combined. tongue

Moderately important PSA.

I can confirm that, if you linked your 3DS/Wii U account (I think it's called your Nintendo Network ID) to the Nintendo Account used for your Switch, then your funds will still be linked even though you can't add to them directly through the 3DS/Wii U eShops.

Luckily I already linked my accounts.

I just realized how much of an old man I’m like, seeing as how I’m preferring the old way Nintendo distributed legacy content while most of y’all prefer the convenience of NSO. It’s absolutely okay to have that preference. It just makes me a bit sad to realize that I’m coming across as old.

Was that the last announced N64 game on the NSO?

BorneAgain Since: Nov, 2009

Kirby 64 was announced for the service on 5/13 and released for NSO around 5/19.

No, I mean, was that the last one among the announced ones(meaning we're waiting for a direct to confirm more).

Sorry for not being clear earlier.

Yeah, if there's any sort of June Direct I can see a quick announcement for the next N64 game there.

Pokémon Snap still hasn’t come out to my knowledge

Of the games shown in the initial N64 NSO announcement video that haven't come out yet, there's still Pokémon Snap. For Japan, it's that as well as the N64 Custom Robo games.

Crossing my fingers that the next "wave" includes Diddy Kong Racing and maybe even Banjo-Tooie. If Banjo-Kazooie could happen, then certainly DKR is at least possible. Unless... Nintendo is scared of Conker?[lol]

Conker is only an issue in the context of his own game, which I highly doubt we'll see on the service.

I feel like Conker's Bad Fur Day depends mostly on if Nintendo is willing to bump the content rating of the N64 NSO app up to M/18+. I have my doubts we'll ever get Conker or Perfect Dark on the service because of that, and think if those games ever come to the Switch, it'll be through a port of Rare Replay.

...I like how last night I talked about why I like NSO, but here I am reminding myself that Nintendo's brand identity alone could prevent games from joining the service that otherwise could have. At least a lot of the more well-known M-rated N64 games like Turok, Doom 64, and Resident Evil 2 are already on the eShop in some capacity.

EDIT: Nevermind. RE2 isn't on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom skipped it, RE3, and Code Veronica. Huh. I think I just assumed every major release from RE1 to RE6 was on the system.

The petty bastard within me wishes Conker could be on NSO just so people could find out for themselves that the game isn't fun to play at all.

diddyknux (4 Score & 7 Years Ago)

That is petty. And what do you do if they did put it on and people by & large did have fun playing the game?

I loved the game myself. I wasn't great at it, but I suck at most games anyway. Certain kinds of gameplay bother me, instead. Quick-time events and rhythm are just something I really can't work with. But even then, it's not like it makes it a bad game to me, just not something I can enjoy.

...What do you mean I'm too neutral?

I personally found. Conker to be very funny.

Then again, I love shows like South Park and Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, so I can find vulgarity funny sometimes.

I'm late to the re:preferred method of playing old games discussion but... honestly, NSO.

NSO isn't perfect at all (god is it not), but having access to all the games on a whim is a huge edge over purchasing them individually. Virtual Console has larger library overall, and includes handheld games that NSO lacks, but that doesn't really detract from NSO's convenience.

That said, Wii VC still has the SNES version of SimCity so we all know who's really the winner here.tongue
