Executive statements on next gen controllers from the Q&A at the Shareholder Meeting:

Takahashi:

We are always dreaming up new things. For example, for 1-2-Switch, the first game released for Nintendo Switch, we suggested that people play by looking at each other and not at the screen. And for VR, we thought about how we could change not just the controller but also the gameplay itself, and came up with the Nintendo Labo Toy-Con 04: VR Kit. The software exhibited at this year’s E3 just happened to be mostly the type that is played with controller in hand, looking at the screen. However, I think you can see from the software we’ve created that we are always trying out new ideas.

Miyamoto:

Nintendo was the first to create the style of playing video games with a plus-shaped directional pad and additional buttons, which has now become the industry standard. It was also Nintendo that changed the original plus-shaped directional pad, which operated digitally in eight directions, into the first analog input device that moves freely in all directions for Nintendo 64. This, too, is now common. We are proud to have created a variety of user interfaces that have now become industry standards.

And, as of now, in terms of accuracy and reliability, I believe this style is the clear winner.

At the same time, I also believe that we should quickly graduate from the current controller, and we are attempting all kinds of things. Our objective is to achieve an interface that surpasses the current controller, where what the player does is directly reflected on the screen, and the user can clearly feel the result. This has not been achieved yet. We have tried all kinds of motion controllers, but none seem to work for all people. As the company that knows the most about controllers, we have been striving to create a controller that can be used with ease, and that will become the standard for the next generation.

Shiota:

The hardware development team is also taking on this challenge related to controllers, but from all the devices born from this effort, only a handful will reach the consumer as products. We will only release a product into the world if it can be successfully used to control software well. We have not yet invented an all-purpose controller that is unlike any of the current devices. Then again, the conventional controller has slowly evolved from the traditional setup of a plus-shaped directional pad with A and B buttons. For example, when you take aim in Splatoon, the action may seem conventional, but the motion sensor gives a wonderful feel to the operation. So even if things may look the same, we are steadily embedding new technologies and finding good ways to use them. One of Nintendo’s strengths is that we do not just think about hardware, but are constantly thinking about it in conjunction with software. We will continue to put in our best efforts in this area.

Donkey Kong Country Returns has made its way to the China-exclusive Nvidia SHIELD. This version runs in 1080p at 60fps with no motion controls.

  • NES: D-pad, multiple action buttons
  • SNES: Shoulder buttons
  • Virtual Boy: Prongs
  • N64: Analogue stick, expandability
  • GameCube: Wireless
  • Wii: Motion controls
  • Wii U: Touchscreen
  • Switch: Modularity

So I guess Nintendo's next controller will be thought-controlled or something.

OK fine, the Wii U was a home console with a screen in the controller...

which the Dreamcast also had. Darn.

Wii U was the first to bring touchscreen controls to a console which Sony then copied for the PS 4.

The N64 was also the first controller that featured rumble, I do believe. I also think Zelda 1 was the first game that had a battery-backed save system. Ocarina of Time was the first game with Camera Lock-On. Pretty sure Super Mario 64 was the first 3D game with a fully controllable camera.

Nintendo's done a lot of things that are now industry standard.

The N64 was also the first console with an analog stick, iirc.

The original Playstation had rumble and predates the N64 by a year and a half.

I'ma be a smartass and say August for a Direct. Somehow, September as it is just feels way too packed for the Switch right now, and there's no way to comfortably market everything major that month without missing something.

The Playstation Dual Analog controller only had rumble in Japan and launched at around the same time as the Rumble Pak. Internationally, the Rumble Pak came out a few months before the first Dual Shock.

Yes, the PS1 launched first, but the N64 was the first to have rumble.

So, this goes under "other Nintendo Media events", but there's going to be a special Brazilian Nintendo Direct tomorrow!

It's special because Nintendo doesn't actually do business in Brazil, so fans and developers are coming together to do their own Direct to highlight the indies coming out of there. Apparently Chucklefish is on the list? I'll be busy when it airs but this is pretty neat.

Maybe Brazil actually toned down their tariffs and Nintendo is coming back. But under its current government, I highly doubt it.

Fun fact, with the announcement of Luigi's Mansion 3 coming out on Halloween, this is the first North American first-party Nintendo retail release to not release on a Friday since Game & Wario back in June 2013 (back then game releases were on Sundays, Pikmin 3 was the first NA release on a Friday).

Also, Luigi's Mansion 3's release announcement reconfirms my theory there won't be a general Direct until September, just like they've for the past three years.

Also, don't forget about Nintendo's Q1 FY 2019 earnings release on July 30th.

Astral Chain is coming out in August and Daemon X Machina in September. I would expect Nintendo would want to give them some Direct attention, and August is the time to do it.

Treehouse's Lead Localization Producer Eric Smith is leaving Nintendo after 11 years.

This guy worked on the Splatoon series, Paper Mari: Color Splash, Super Mario Maker 2's Story Mode and Yamamura's Dojo, Smash 4 and Ultimate's Palutena's Guidance, Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, Breath of the Wild, and others he didn't mention because these are the one's he particularly proud of.

He will be missed.

EDIT: Sakurai hosting a 22 minute demo of Smash Ultimate Hero DLC on July 30th at 6 am PDT.
