I never got too far into Legends, and the Wii U version belongs to my brother, so I might grab Definitive later.

Little Witch Academia and Dragon's Crown come first though.

Is there any actually-new content besides the BOTW costumes?

Not really no, other than the costumes, the fairies becoming 3D models, and seeing the WW content in higher quality.

From what I understand, if you've owned/played both the other versions of the game, then there's very little incentive to get Definitive aside from the 3DS content getting a graphical upgrade.

And for those that didn't play the vanilla versions?

In that case, it sounds like a great deal. The vanilla was a great game, and this version has all the DLC and whatnot.

Pretty much. If you haven't played either version, then Definitive is Exactly What It Says on the Tin and is the version you want to get.

There was a Reddit thread that made an overview of differences between the versions about a month ago, and it sums up the differences better than I would. You can look over it if you want, but this is probably the most relevant bit:

"I don't have a Switch, should I get the 3DS/Wii U version?

The Wii U version is the weakest in terms of base content. You need two sizable DLC packs to really even approach the other versions in content, and even then you are going to be missing out on half of the story missions which were exclusive to the 3DS version.

The 3DS version has most of the content that the Switch version will have, but is lacking any kind of multiplayer features. It also performs piss poor on anything but a "new" 3DS.

The Switch version truly is the "Definitive Edition".

Final Thoughts?

For the 3DS Version: The main selling point for you is going to be the addition of multiplayer, and all of the DLC in a neat package of gameplay unlocks rather than monetary unlocks.

For the Wii U Version: It's almost a whole new game with the amount of content you're getting from the 3DS version. The base Wii U game was seriously lacking in lasting content. A lot of the quality of life enhancements make it much less grindy, has less tedious bossfights, and just a more organized and streamlined game. Things like getting A ranks, and hunting for item cards are so much easier and less annoying in the Definitive Edition. If you enjoyed the Wii U version and just want MORE of the same game with new features to make things less annoying, you really can't afford to pass this up.

My positive impression also comes from someone who only played the Wii U version.

So if I were to purchase it I'd still be getting a decent amount of new content.

Welp, I caved and brought the remake while I was out seeing Deadpool 2 this morning.

The two big draws were the additional content. And the fact I can play it portably.

Just played the definitive edition for the first time, and holy cow, it feels so much more fluid.

So it's kinda weird how the mission for Marin's Lv 4+ weapon is way easier than the one for her Lv 4 one.

Mainly because for her Lv 4 one, you're stuck between two opposing armies where their generals and bigger units are buffed up, and in the Lv 4+ one all you have to do is defeat the right enemies. Which becomes marginally more difficult because they also have "fake" clones, and you can permanently remove those from the field by defeating another type of enemy.

I only just beat Legend Mode (though I still have to do Cia's missions), so I've got all of Adventure Mode to look forward to.

It'd be cool if they had made a gamemode where you had several factions vying for control of a map, and each one had a turn to attack a territory, and the owning faction defended it (a la Star Wars Battlefront II 2005, but with a Monsters (or any third-party), Dark Forces, and Hyrule set of factions where you picked one, fought using their characters, and tried to conquer the whole map.

Ah, like the Empires expansions in Dynasty Warriors? I think that could be pretty neat, though I suspect that it'd come down to forces of light and darkness, given the spread of characters available.

If there's ever a sequel, I hope that they fix the way notifications queue up. I have notions for some ways this could be improved:

  • "I need help!" messages from mission-vital characters jump to the top of the queue, interrupting anything else. This way, messages can't pile up on top of it so that you're only notified five seconds before your commander falls.
  • When you complete a mission before you're even notified of it, the game skips the "new mission!" message and goes straight to "mission complete!" The "mission complete!" message could be modified to ensure that the player knows what they did. (Breath of the Wild could be a model for this.)
  • Regardless of the dialog, characters disappear normally when defeated, and just deliver their lines from "offstage." Alternatively, pickups fly off of fallen foes at the moment of defeat, so you don't have to wait for them to dramatically collapse. Just... something to make it so that I don't have to stand over Volga for what feels like a half hour waiting for everyone to shut up so I can grab his spear.
  • When you are defeated, the queue of notifications is instantly cut off and you're told why you lost. Few things in the game are more annoying than losing just as you're getting a new mission, so your character stops fighting and you have to wait through six messages before you finally find out what happened. The mission log could be added to the post-battle menu in case you're keen to see what it skipped over.
  • The player can turn different kinds of notifications and cutscenes on and off. The ability to turn off the intros in Adventure Mode is a good feature, and I'd like to see them play with the concept more.

[up] You don’t actually need to walk over materials or weapons to collect them, you automatically pick them up after the battle’s over with.

Would you believe that I knew that when I played the Wii U version, and then forgot it? That makes me feel kind of silly, but in that case, dropping the pickups onto the field becomes kind of misleading. I wonder if it'd work to get rid of those pickups (while leaving the potions, hearts, etc, obviously) and then add the material you got to the "so and so killed enemy x" notification. Like a little bronze "Moblin Flank" under "Lana killed Moblin!"

Thanks for the reminder, though.

maybe they could do it in those little item pick up notifications like Breath of the Wild has? There, every item you pick up (after you already picked it up once, because for the first time it does give you a pause and a bigger notification) also gets that little thing at the corner of the screen, and it's not intrusive at all.

I hear that Fire Emblem Warriors has the drops just automatically act like you picked them up, the same way rupees do in this game. That might be the way to do it, and I suspect that it would be (relatively) easy to patch in. Whenever a material spawns, just have it act like you ran through it the moment it hit the ground.

Random question: does AI Cia seem really passive in adventure mode? At least in some battles.

It feels a bit odd how you only get a few weapons on the first map now, whereas before on the Wii U one you got most lvl 3 ones there.

I'm not having too much difficulty with it either, so I wonder if the stats are balanced to take that into account.

Or maybe it's just because I'm better at the game now.

I bet they're going to announce new characters at E3, like they added Blastoise and Aegislash to Pokken Tournament Deluxe. My money is on one or more of the Champions from Breath of the Wild, but I've still got my fingers crossed for Saria and Groose.

I'm guessing that the maps are balanced for players to truck all the way through them in one go, which means the first one is probably a lot easier now than when it was the only adventure map in the game, and expected to carry players all the way from 1 to 100, or whatever the cap was then.

EDIT: [up] I personally doubt that they're adding any more DLC - paid DLC on a "definitive" edition would be a bad look. If we see the Champions in Musou (which I would very much like to), it will most likely be an announcement for Hyrule Warriors 2.

I'd especially appreciate a hypothetical "Mipha who survived into the present," because if her brother's any indication, she'd be an 11-foot-tall colossus, and a great element-swap for Ganondorf's Trident style.

Re: New Characters

I would love to see the four Champions from BOTW, Saria, Nabooru, Groose, Vaati (even if his role is mostly filled by Wizzro), and maybe Ralph as a Link costume or something.

As long as I got Saria and Groose, I'd be happy. Others, like Nabooru, Vaati, and the Champions, would be a nice bonus.

[up][up] I'm just sayin', Pokken Tournament Deluxe got new characters.

Aside: I love the rebalanced requirements on the adventure mode maps. It's now possible to A rank after a tough fight where you took some licks.
