Puella Magi Troper Magica -- Signup Thread

Welcome to Ryuugo Town! A small town in East Tokyo, Ryuugo has a healthy population and a great school system. But lurking just beneath the veneer of normality lies something more. Hidden from view in mystical barriers, Mahou Shoujo battle abominations known as witches at the request of the mysterious Kyubey. Making a contract with him, they get one wish in exchange for doing battle with witches until their inevitable death. This wish is only limited by the power of the girl in question and will shape her powers as a Mahou Shoujo.

So there we go! A new RP.

Anyone wants to suggest some worldbuilding on the town or characters families or some such feel free to submit it here, or if we get that far, the Discussion, for my review.

Anyways, Character Sheets are slightly different as you can make a character who is an established Mahou Shoujo already or you can create a girl whom Kyubey is trying to contract with. I will have a PM conversation with anyone who's character contracts over the course of the RP to determine powers and such.

Veteran Mahou Shoujo Characters will no longer be accepted.

Question. If a magical ability requires a cooldown time (like I assume Homura's does), do you want us to think in terms of human fps or not? One second is a fairly short period of time for a normal human to perceive, but it can be an eternity in the eyes of a gamer or a professional athlete, and 100 milliseconds may seem short to professional athletes, but it's enough time to do an entire afternoon's worth of cleaning for Superman. Point is, fights can be decided in incredibly short periods of time, and it just gets shorter the faster the combatants become (especially when you push into the territory of the superhuman).

I ask because Rebellion's Mami vs. Homura fight gave us one of the most epic Gun Kata fights since Equilibrium, in which both of them were basically dodging bullets fired from guns that were a few inches from their face, so I think it's safe to say that "superhuman" applies to a magical girl's reflexes as well as their strength and endurance. Which would obviously make even one second an incredibly fucking long cooldown time in a fight between magical girls or magical girls and witches.

I always saw it more as you can spam an ability as much as you want so long as you don't expend too much of your power and end up with a corrupted Soul Gem. However Homura's power didn't really look like it had a cooldown so much as it appeared that she could only maintain the timestop for a certain amount of subjective time.

I have plans for her that don't necessarily end in lots and lots of despair (not that despair is ever off the table in an RP like this), but yes. A ride is definitely something you are in for if you think she'd make a good mentor for anyone.

And I guess I'll post the first?

• Name: Mari Mokoto
• Age: 12
• Wish: "I wish to protect the ones I love."
• Normal Appearance: Rarely is she this happy.
• Costumed Appearance: Mari's Puella Magi outfit is essentially a light silver chainmail shirt with a golden scalemail skirt. She also has leather gloves and leather boots.
• Weapon: A shield, though with sharp edges to be effective against Witches and Familiars.
• Power: Her power is to create small, bubble-like shields for anyone she casts the power on. Any phsyical attacks bounce off the shield, magical attacks (true magical attacks, like a witch spewing fire, for instance) weaken the shield and can shatter them over time, and mental attacks (Witch Kisses, for one) pass through the shield without fail. This is due to Mari's idea of protection and her not knowing at the time of what Witches could do.
• Personality: Mari is surprisingly cool-headed considering her age, though this is mainly because of her desire to protect her friends and mother. Unfortunately, she suffers PTSD from her encounter with the Witch, which in turn fuels her cool-headedness and dedication to fighting Witches, as she doesn't want anyone else to suffer what she suffered. She's not 100% cold and distant though. If she ever has the time (considering who she is, that's unlikely), she can enjoy herself with her friends and be pretty happy about it. Unfortunately, other Magical Girls don't count as friends. They're either "Sisters in Arms" or enemies to her. Mostly the former, as she cares less for the overall turf war, even if it means she'll not be getting Grief Seeds.
• Backstory: Mari was one of those potential Magical Girls who had an encounter with a Magical Girl and her Kyubey. Unfortunately, the time of their meeting was a little more... drastic. Mari, along with her parents, were trapped in a Witch's Labyrinth. If this was a tale where love and courage won out, the parents would have been saved with little to no problem. Though that wasn't the case. By the time the Magical Girl got there, the father was already killed by the Witch's Familiars and Mari and her mother would soon be next. Not only that, but the Magical Girl only had time to save the two of them before she herself was killed by the Witch, not once explaining what it was to Mari. Hiding away from the Witch, Mari and her mom trembled and counted down their remaining time before the Familiars could find them and kill them. However, Kyubey arrived and offered Mari the ability to fight the Witch, provided she formed a contract with him. However, Kyubey left out basic details like what the Witch was, how it attacked, and all the other stuff, allowing Mari's desperation to consume her and cause her to say her wish. She became a Magical Girl and defeated the Witch with a huge amount of effort. However, Mari's mother was rendered catatonic from the fight and had to be sent to the hospital where she still lives to this day. Mari told Kyubey not to tell her any more than she needs to, as she has all the information she needs to begin her war against the Witches.

• Appearance: Eh? {Fore-sha-dow-ing?} What’s that? S-sorry, I’m not very good with the foreign language.
• Personality: Due to a dozen years of intimacy with the twin-sided nature of life and death, she is not overly concerned about dying, and instead seeks to cherish every moment of her life - 'just living is enough' is her perspective on life. The type of girl that would smiles vibrantly at the happiness of others and weeps openly at their sorrow, yet welcomes death like an old friend, it could be said that her SAN-rating is surprisingly high!? Beyond that, she is resourceful, cunning and far too clever by half, which, mixed with her infectious wellspring of determination, very much off-set the various maladies that afflicted her. For all her capabilities as a human, however…
• Backstory: Born with lupus –which, surprisingly, have nothing to do with turning into a doggie to the whims of a celestial body and is in actuality a serious medical condition, Saya has adopted a mature attitude towards life and death insofar as it concerns herself, while also retaining much of her childish whimsies. Nevertheless, her future prospect looks to be on the inky side- living with her hardworking salaryman of a father, off of her dead mother’s dwindling insurance, while also being pressured from all sides by both well and ill meaning relatives. Her life hangs on a fine balance and, to her guilt-ridden dismay, neither her goodhearted attempts to help nor pettiness-driven acts of protests seems to elicit even a minor changes to the situation. Powerless- her life and livelihood, not her own to decide. The dice has been rolled, the hand has been dealt- fate is set in stone.
