Nobody mentioned Hitman?Hitman is the Magnum Opus of Garth Ennis.Hitman rocks.

I consider Hitman and the Punisher to be tied for the place of second character Ennis writes best. Number one is, of course, Superman.

He should do a mini-series thereof one of these days. Or DC should resurrect Hitman now that Section 8 has set a precedent.

Yes,Superman is the only superhero Garth has respect for.Btw,it was an issue of Hitman,so Hitman as a comic book still wins. Well,DC is redoing Bloodlines so there is a possibility of reintroducing Tommy.

I'd agree Welcome Back, Frank and Hitman as Ennis's finest work.

I'd say his worst is by far, Crossed, which is seriously one of the worst comics I've read.

And I've read Iron Fist: Living Weapon!

I have the promotional short film he did for Stitched on order. It's less than twenty minutes (even including the credits) but the special features apparently clock in at around nearly two hours.

He's also done a Dan Dare limited... but you'd never know it's his just by looking at it - it's about as close to writing a cape as it gets.

Given both their general preference for anti-heroes,I wonder what sort of unholy abomination would emerge from a team up with Rob Liefeld as artist. It's paradoxical even thinking about it - the writer who never saw a trenchcoat he didn't like, meeting the artist who never drew a body capable of fitting into one. Food for thought.

I think Liefelds recent Bloodshot is pretty close to that unholy ideal. With some Mark Millar thrown in. I feel I should mention Garth wrote the first arc of Darkness, for some reasons."Quick,we must stop him from having sex."

Didn't he also say something about liking Wonder Woman once? I ask cause his portrayal of her in All Star Section 8 was... odd.

Not that I know, but I remember him saying he doesn't like to bash female characters.

He treated Catwoman fairly respectfully and never portrayed her as being incompetent, from what I can remember.

His three-part Spider-Man story also wasn't bad.

You mean the one with that Bug dude?

The one who was made of bugs that is. I forget that he wrote that. It was pretty good.

Yet,Spider-man is just a nuisance in MK Punisher series. He still get better treatment then Wolverine. Good way to see what Garth thinks of an individual hero is to see how he treated their expy in The Boys. Also his War Stories are worth reading if you like war stories.

Even as someone who's kinda on the doesn't like Wolverine bandwagon (though it took a while, and only after X3), I still dislike how Ennis writes him.

I mean, you could address some of the issues of the character, but instead you just make him a joke to prop Frank up, which makes even people who hate Wolverine and like Frank frustrated I bet.

The thing is, you can perfectly write a Logan story with no superhero elements and just having him as a standard superpowered action movie-like toughie with no qualms about killing bad guys. And that's, like, Ennis' favorite kind of character, so I don't get his contempt for the character. I mean, I get why he'd hate a Green Lantern or even Batman to the point of strawmanning all new flaws for them just to mock them, but with Wolverine or even Lobo, I think it just shows how he didn't even bother to check the source subject of what he was writing.

Hence that one Wolverine story by Frank Tieri, who went on to write the surprisingly alright Punisher Noir and Space Punisher.

To be fair, that story also was fairly troubled. The end jab at Frank's sexuality was very forced and full of Unfortunate Implications.

Yeah, I forgot to emphasize that, author on board regarding fictional characters almost invariably leading to cruder (more often than not) retaliation.

Wolverine's portrayal in the Punisher guest spots didn't bother me that much, though, at least not as much Daredevil's did. Logan was merely caricatured and dealt amusing injuries that were not that much worse than the ones he usually incurs, but Matt (who Ennis had previously written decently enough in The Punisher Kills the Marvel Universe, of all places) was depicted as kind of a goober with no visible (to me, at least) attempts at comedy or satire.

The Spidey appearances didn't irk me in any way; like Banner and the Hulk he had shit (like being knocked around by an undead transsexual cyborg) happen to him, but that isn't too out of the ordinary, and he was otherwise relatively normal.

[up][up]True. Mind you, Ennis' depiction of LGBT Qs is also problematic

If you're not a heterosexual white dude (or the best friend thereof) and you're in an Ennis comic, the best you can hope for is surviving to the end of the arc. A generalisation perhaps but Nat the Hat besides it holds up pretty well, unfortunately.
