Digimon is BACK! This new series seems much like the classic in terms of the hero's journey and discovery of the digis. I kinda have this Yu-Gi-Yo Zexal feel around it. If you catch it, give it a shot.

First ep review: Mikey looks unsuprisingly like Ty, Angie, the token girl, seems to have ADD, and Jermmy looks like that guy from the original Yu-Gi-Yo who wore that tan trenchcoat, but the name escapes me. Apperently the plot is similar to the one in the second segment of The Digimon movie, where electronic shit breaks down and stuff. Shoutmon reminds me of Speedy and GOD I LOVE IT! In a nutshell: It's like a simpler revision of the franchise. Plus there's secrets unbound. There are two other digidestines in this world. one of them evil, i guess. If you're a fan of the old, you might like the new. 9/10

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm....

Sir, you do know that Digimon isn't western animation right? Digimon Xros Wars(Fusion is better name than that for dub I suppose) already has page on anime section...

Ah well, doesn't really matter, Xros Wars was so awful in my opinion to the point I wasn't able to finish it <_< Pacing issues and lack of world building is something I didn't really like

I can't get into Digimon like I used to, the later seasons seem much less complex then the earlier seasons.

Yes, those earlier seasons, gotta love em.

That said, I don't know how Xros War's dub will turn out and am not going to stick around to see, TOEI took to long localizing it so I went and watched the sub.

That said, there is no reason why a "Western" Digital Monsters could not be good. It might even bring in some new ideas. (Stop homaging bun, set it somewhere other than urban Japan, a new take on the digital world, monsters that actually have names again-if you are going to keep the lizards we could at least remember the first two had names).

You don't need good effects to tell a story effectively, which earlier seasons did, and did very well.

I think the Adventures relied too much on emotional breakthroughs of the human cast to the detriment of their unnamed monsters, most of whom were satellite characters and to the detriment of the problem solving/fighting itself. They rarely had to be too clever and actively endanger themselves around monsters who thankfully practice mook chivalry most of the time.

Admittedly, Adventure did have some funny moments and got better all around after 22 episodes or so but it really was not that good. I can blame the mons craze for the favor it got over the superior Godzilla: The Series but even then Monster Rancher was running along side of it with a more developed group (both individually and as a whole), more engaging circumstances and better action scenes. Adventure was miles ahead of Pokemon's cartoon and Tamers could stand up to any of its contemporary competition but in the middle of those two is the crash and burn that was Adventure 02.

It makes more sense for a child to be protected from a giant monster by another giant monster then to punch said monster in the face. There's nothing clever about the latter. I do think Adventure was fine on it's own, (Adventure 2 notwithstanding, that series was pretty bad) I wouldn't be able to compare it to Monster Rancher however having not seen too much of it. I saw parts of the first half of the series but to the best of my knowledge it didn't even finish airing in the US and I never actually sought it out... and have no plans too, there's not enough time in the day sorry.

Godzilla was... a different animal entirely and I wouldn't even think to compare it to Digimon, it being more a monster of the week show, less serialized and well, sorry to say it, western. I think we all know that the East and West tend to have very different ways of executing the same idea. You only need to look for shows that have been made in both Japan in America to see this. Take the Marvel Anime's (Iron Man, Wolverine, X-men) and Compare them to the Western versions that aired (wolverine and the X-men, Iron Man Armored Adventures, and Avengers Earths Mightiest Heroes). Hell the Transformers series even. That said I still believe Digimon was more EPIC then Godzilla was just due to the sheer scope of the events taking place.

That is a little jarring at first Genki had a connection to the phoenix, as it specifically brought him into the world, this even let him powerup the group. Digimon D-cyber and Data Squad aped the concept but Holly was a noncombatant and a better one. She rarely contributed to fights but would usually put the largest solid thing available between her and any hostiles if she did not flee altogether. She also had a weapon if necessary.

But even if Holly had enthusiastically cheered out in the open it would not be as noticeable because Monster Rancher has lower power levels than Digimon, for the most part. When Etemon erased various land marks from existence and absorbed all shots attacks sent his way, Tai(chi) thought it a good idea to charge alongside Greymon, rather than hang back in a ditch after he did his part in evolution. He could have taken refuge on a giant flier and brainstormed maybe. Greymon himself charging in is a little jarring, he'd want to take a more defensive stance seeing a guy he cannot beat anyway, suddenly get so much stronger.

Greymon gets shot down, predictably, but he's just fine? Oh, Tai's courage(recklessness) is letting him evolve again! (we just had two episodes berating Tai's recklessness but now its a superpower) Genki might be too thickheaded to stop trying worf barrages but he does tend to keep his distance from the uber monsters until he has some plan he thinks will work or a good reason to risk his health.

The cast was just better to me. Rancher's did not transform nearly as much but they developed more despite it and tended to have as much history, as strong passions, as deep aversions and as much motivation for what they did as their human counterparts, unlike Adventure. Every member of the searchers did not contribute equally but they all did enough not see any redundancies. They did not interact with each other equally but there were no significant stretches were any two given searchers did not have some interaction. 7 is more manageable than 16 I suppose but the Digidestined did not have the appeal that the searchers did.

@Spooky: Well, that's news to me, since I stoped watching Digimon since Adventures. I still think this one is pretty nice, but is it just me or is Nick slowly trying to take the place of [[JETIX Jetix]]? Oh, well. This by far has more potential than The Digimon second season IMHO.

I used to be a big fan of Digimon. I still love Tamers. Relatively recently I tried to watch Xros Wars and I found it to be enjoyable. Shoutmon in particular I found to be enjoyable. I'd have kept watching, but my internet is terrible.

About the same here, but I can watch Xros wars on T.V. instead. I've never seen the Sub, but this dub really does match the characters somewhat well.

I'm a huge fan of Digimon (moreso than Pokemon even) so I'm surprised they actually brought Xros Wars over.

I haven't started watching Xros Wars yet. I'm in the middle of watching the Japanese subs of every series since I've seen their English incarnations, aside from Savers, which I watched before the dub came out.note

Hopefully I can catch an episode of the dub, though I still plan to watch the Japanese versions eventually.

@Cider: Yeah, biggest problem with original series is that digimon are all just "nice guys" personality wise, they don't have their own identity beyond wanting to help the human characters... While that problem does exist in some of the other series too its biggest with the original one.

I haven't watched Digimon in a long time, but this reminds me of the first series, so far. It has a charm that Pokémon (the show, not the game) never had. I think I may continue to watch it.

[up][up],[up]That's what makes shows like this and Kaijudo stand out from the Mon norm. These guys have their own personal agendas and could be pretty capable as lone characters if the show was only about them.

American dub for "He is Shoutmon, hear him roar!" episode aired today. I seriously get this Samurai Pizza Cats vibe from Shout everytime he speaks. It might be because wild mass guesshis voice actor for the dub also voiced Speedy. Also, I now predict that Shoutmon and Cutemon will be shipped in future episodes.waii But seriously, CUTEMON? Who the Hell comes up with these stupid names for mon shows?

[up]Cutemon was better when it was in japan as it was not called Kawaii mon there.

You look happy, I can change that if you want.

So, just for the record... We are all aware that the anime section already has a ''Digimon'' thread, yes?

Did the original have so many puns in its dialogue, or is that just the dub? It gets annoying sometimes. Don't get me wrong, humor has always been part of Digimon and I appreciate it, I just feel there are a *bit* too many puns here.
