Shantae: Half-Genie Hero and General Thread

The Shantae series has been pretty well-acclaimed, and Way Forward has made many good games, even if most of their output is licensed stuff (Which still manages to be good).

GBC Shantae was one of best GBC games in the libray, it was good for a platformer.

Well well, meet the woman behind this game's animation. It's Mariel Catwright, who also happened to be the lead animator of Skullgirls.

You have a very good eye. The latest update reveals that they have Mariel Cartwright, the lead animator of Skullgirls, working with them.

Huh, the name of the new game was based on Ranma ½. Didn't expect that.

I would have thought it ws a play on the name of Half Minute Hero, myself.

I'm actually not very surprised by that. The visual style of the subtitle seems to fit Ranma 1/2.

They've added a coin to the $90 pledge reward. Eh, I would like it more if there was an original image on it, but at least it includes Risky on it.

On a minor note they gave Shantae her original skin tone on the promo video image, but not in the video itself it seems.

Well, changing the video itself may take some time, since they'd have to rework it somewhat. They didn't change the Shantae sprites on the section headers and stretch goal artwork either.

The collector coin has actually been part of the $90 and up reward from the start, this is just our first time seeing the coin's design.

"A temporary annoyance"? Risky, honey, Shantae's taken you out 2-3 times, once without any powers. At some point, you gotta recognize that you've picked up a nemesis.

Ya know, if "like the many that have come before" part is true, then Risky always either fights heroes who are like cockroaches or really sucks as a villain

Considering her blase attitude towards Shantae in Risky's Revenge (which is probably because she considers removing Shantae's Genie powers as a success to her plans), and the fact that she's working alongside Shantae in the 3DS game, means that she probably really doesn't think of Shantae as a threat. This isn't something like Bowser boasting about his superiority over the Mario Bros despite countless losses against them, this is a pirate who had her initial plans thwarted because she wasn't aware of Shantae being at Sequin Land when she invaded. Her second plan seemed to account for Shantae overall.

In fact, the only time she's actually angry at Shantae for anything the half-genie's done to her is at the end of the original game, where, right before her boss fight, Risky threatens to cut Shantae apart and wear her entrails as an accessory. It's also the only time Shantae fought Risky directly.

Anyways, I think that line may or may not imply that Risky's probably not human and/or is very long-lived.

Risky is almost definitely not human.

I think genie, but I don't really know what genies look like in this series, so I am probably wrong.

Nah, shes not genie since the genies are the "Mysteriously vanished people with great power" in the series. Kinda like Chozo from Metroid and stuff I guess

Wait, her being undead hasn't been confirmed yet? I thought that's why she had the skull motif and pale grey skin.
