I'm also in favor of Circumstantial Atheism. Even if it sounds a little bit like someone might only be claiming to be an atheist sometimes/when it's convenient.

I am. This is probably the single most common challenge to strongly-religious characters, as well as backstory for atheists. (Because apparently people only believe in a god when they haven't been exposed to how rotten the world really is... rather than the other way around, which is statistically at least as common. <_< But that's beside the point.)
