Double post: as of March 31st, 2019, the PS 4 is 96.8 million units sold LTD.

If they haven't passed the 100 million units sold by the end of this month, then sometime in May it will.

Microsoft really seems to be changing a lot lately, doesn't it? Edge is suddenly becoming more like Chrome, parts of Windows are now open source, and now this partnership.

The Micro Monopoly days are well and truly over, it seems.

This comic is a pretty succinct summary of the situation.

And here is Buckley's news post to go with it:

Sony and Microsoft are teaming up.

That sounds odd at first, but less so once you remember that while they are direct competitors in a couple areas of business, they’re both very big companies and hey, business is business.

A “memorandum of understanding” is far from a legally binding document, and “partner on new innovations to enchance customer experiences” is vague as all hell, but the fact that they’re even talking about working together is pretty interesting.

At a glance, it seems like both companies have something to gain here. Right now I think Sony is winning at the whole “video games” thing, but Microsoft definitely has a handle on the cloud computing angle, which I’m not sure Sony really has the infrastructure to tackle on the scale they might need.

What they might need leads me to my next baseless assumption, that this might be in some way a response to Google’s Stadia announcement. I’m far from readily onboard with Google’s idea of a streaming-only console, basically because they haven’t told us fuck-all about how it works or what it costs.

The idea, however, is interesting, and I think we can all see that the cloud plays a big part in the future of gaming. Whether we’re ready to completely give up physical consoles for the cloud remains to be seen, but the cloud is in there nonetheless. So perhaps for the PS 5 and the Xbox 37 (because fuck sequential numbering, right?), Microsoft and Sony see more sense in creating a compatible backend for them both to use and being prepared when Google starts throwing around its considerable bankroll.

Microsoft and Sony will always be competitors at the end of the day, I’m sure, but anything the companies do that may lead to benefits for the consumer (cross-platform play as the rule, rather than the exception, for instance) is okay in my book.

Or, perhaps this will all turn out to be nothing.

Optimism is a duty.

Sony has launched PlayStation Productions to produce films and TV shows themselves.

Apparently between a video game movie based on one of their IP not turning out as well as they were hoping it would and a video game movie based on something from the competition making the rounds as being "pretty good", they figured they should strike when the iron's hot.

Their first movie will be a soft reboot of R&C that ignores the earlier movie.

[up] Soft reboots happening after the initial try didn't turn out so hot? Eh, in this context, I'm encouraging it.

I have the sneaking suspicion R&C would've turned out better if they kept the script by TJ Fixman (who wrote for the games themselves).

Not sure what was going on in Kevin Munroe's mind to make it way more slapsticky when A) the series had plenty of gags as is and B) everyone was wanting the crazy sci-fi weapon slinging awesomeness they got from the games.

I hate that word, 'immersive'. When Sony changed the Playstation Store to have a normal on-screen keyboard instead of the alphabetical list it used to be, they called that "immersive" too. It's just the fucking store search function, give the buzzwords a rest.

So here I was looking up for a capture card to record some KHIII bosses when I found out that the PS 4 can record gameplay itself. Silly me. How is the PS 4 quality and record length?

From what I've recorded, the quality is pretty decent. It drops if you upload to youtube, however. I believe there are also options to change the length of the recording (it's 15 minutes by default), but I think changing it to a longer time impacts the quality (I've not tested this myself).

As for how it actually works, I think it's basically always recording, and when you press Share > Save Video Clip, it just saves whatever is recorded.

An example, if you'd like one:

PlayStation Vue is shutting down January 30th next year.

Evidently, it just couldn't compete with the rest of the streaming crowd.

[up] Not super-surprised. I had Vue for a little while; its UI was unintuitive and confusing, and it lagged pretty much constantly on PS3. One time I selected a channel and it just never stopped loading, and that was on my PS4.

Oh, and when I went to cancel it, the site didn't work for days and I got charged for another month through no fault of my own. They refunded it, though... as store credit...

[up] Hard to say. We only know so much about the PS5, and even then, it's nothing super-official.

Like, the PS5 will apparently have some form of backwards compatibility with previous PlayStations, but I don't know if Sony outright said anything about it. (Feel free to correct me on this.)
