TLP Crash Rescue - Fixing prematurely launched TLPs and pages

Go To

Prematurely launched pages and pages that weren't fully fleshed out at the point of launching, are a big problem. Since these usually share several problems at once, this thread is aimed at re-running them through the TLP for fixing - the usual fix - or cutting them if they are too bad.

Problems this thread deals with include bad names, not enough/bad examples, unclear description, etc.

For the interested, here's a list of recently created pages. Launches

Note: Please do not request a mod to unlaunch drafts that don't have any issues besides lacking a launch notice/24hr launch notice. While 24hr launch notices are mandatory, there are a few exceptions to the rule. If you see a draft's sponsor launch a TLP without an announcement, it's best to remind them of our TLP Guidelines first. If they continue to repeatedly launch drafts without a launch notice, you can report them on Ask The Tropers or the TLP Community Issues thread.

As I said in the TLP, the issue isn't chairs or being omnipresent, it's the fact that it's Like Reality, Unless Noted. We don't need a trope page for "smiles when happy," because we know that smiles mean happiness because that's how the real world works.

[up] But we do trope a lot of things about how the real world works. It's called Truth in TV.

And here's the thing: while people smile when happy, there are a lot of other kinds of reactions of irritation, not just eye rolling.

[up] And there are a lot of other reactions to being happy, not just smiling. So?

Truth in TV tropes still need to be actual tropes that don't just happen because reality says so. There's a difference between, say, Braving the Blizzard (because people do get stuck in blizzards IRL) and "It snows when it's cold out". One is a trope with a unique pattern that just happens to mimic reality... the other is Like Reality, Unless Noted.

I'm not saying that "Irritated Eye Roll" isn't a trope- just that it needs to be more than "an annoyed character rolls their eyes".

[up] Maybe I just see it differently.

"Something makes them irritated that they roll their eyes" - I'm seeing good context in that something. I.e just what would make them be irritated enough to do that? It may say something about their character or whatever caused that reaction.

The draft itself, though, was just "an annoyed character will roll their eyes", so...

Anyway, I'll holler a mod to get it sent back.

Is it ok if I go through Pages Needing Wicks and ask if some of them should be sent back? Or is this only for freshly launched TL Ps? Should I just make TRS threads for each one? Some of them dont even have a YKTTW/TLP because its wasnt until 3ish years it was mandatory to go to TLP to make a trope. This was before the Main/ namespace was restricted to mods only.

Theres more than just this but I just discovered Batty Books. It only has two on page examples from works not counting the general examples. I am not sure about the concept either. It also was created without TLP

[up] This is for freshly made (or at least a few months old) TLPs; older tropes are too established to be unlaunched without any TRS discussion.

Taking those to TRS sounds good to me, but with the backlog, you may want to hold off. The sandbox in my bio can hold the information in the meantime.

Lore Porn was launched with only 2 net hats.

... of course it did.

There's a ''lot'' of ongoing discussion on what it... is. But the sponsor is... enthusiastic.

Yeah, he seemed desperate. I wanted to bring it preemptively, but I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt.

I guess I was wrong.

We also still need Eye Roll unlaunched; that was another overly enthusiastic sponsor.

But jeez, I'm not even entirely sure where all the hats for Lore Porn came from considering it's only been a few days and most of the discussion has been teaching the sponsor how to sponsor.

If I had to guess, I'm assuming that people threw him hats for encouragement, and/or turned their bombs to hats when the trope went from "gibberish" to "well-formatted but ill-defined."

Anyway, I hollered your post, but I haven't seen a lot of mod activity across the site this week; I called for Eye Roll to be unlaunched last week but no response.

Some mods have been active lately; so should we holler again for Eye Roll and Lore Porn to be kicked back? My other recent hollers (like moving threads) have been answered, so I'm not sure why our hollers for this one are being overlooked, but we can try again.

They are busy with life and such also probably understaffed. But yeah hollering again might work.

Signature Role YMMV was rogue-launched after having no TLP activity since last July. The account that did the launching was just created today.

I feel this may be a rude question, and I apologize if it is, but it's something I've been wanting to ask for a while now.

Is there anything in the TLP launching process that specifically says something in the line of "We frown upon rogue launching, do not launch this trope unless you have been an active participate in its creation and have announced plans to launch it"?

Yeah, but I'm thinking in terms of something you'd see on a confirmation page. Something you couldn't reasonably miss seeing while int he process of launching a trope. Something that could make someone stop and think "oh, wait, maybe I shouldn't do this", or remove any excuse of ignorance if they do it anyway.

Unfortunately, no- but it might not stop people if there was, as it does tell you to Crosswick and that gets ignored constantly by the same people who rogue launch. It also wouldn't deter sponsors from stealth launching.

No, but it would at least make sure anyone who does has no excuse if called out on it later. Can't say you never saw the rule if it's placed right in front of you while you're in the process of breaking it.
