I'm down in New York, somewhere near the X-Mansion. We stocked up on supplies and fuel but not much else. One of our neighbors sandbagged his driveway which was probably a more sensible thing to do than what we did (i.e. nothing). No rain yet, but my mom is on leave as the UN has closed its office in the city.

Wise Papa Smurf, corrupted by his own power. CAN NO LEADER GO UNTAINTED?!I'm in NYC in Manhattan (not on the coast). I think that, here, we'll get a particularly big thunderstorm.
Alt account of Angeldog 2437.OP updated with some info for those who don't know what Sandy is.
Quod gratis asseritur, gratis negatur.I hope there's no flooding here though.
Alt account of Angeldog 2437.Oh ok, so that's what people are talking about when they say "hurricane Sandy".
Even after years of leaving Hong Kong, I'm still surprised about how much damage those things can actually do. Given that hurricanes (or typhoons) in HK means nothing more than an extra holiday for normal everyday people (nowadays, at least. Before they are far more destructive).

I'm further north (Nova Scotia) but I'm also right on the coast relatively speaking. I'd expect a ton of rain, wind and possibly sporadic power failures. Might make my commutes a pain though. Good luck to everyone in the heavier hit areas though.

Alt account of Angeldog 2437.Got a timeline here. Hope it helps.

Does look like New York is going to get hit... or at least they are preparing for it.

Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects.I am in the outskirts of the hurricanes path,we're getting rain at the moment and supposedly there might even be snow later on.
Hopefully it won't lead to any power outages around here.
Never lived through a hurricane before.
Central New Jersey.
Wind have been picking up as of late and schools canceled for the next two days at a minimum. I went down to the river a few hours ago and it's MUCH higher than usual. a good 3-4 feet at least.
I have. 2, irene and another. I forget the other one's name but my brother and I got tarps, went to the waterfront and tried to fly.

The wind just stopped outside. Either I'm in the eye of the storm, or "my" storm won't amount to much.
I'm a skeptical squirrelDon't know about your part of Brooklyn, but I just took a look outside and there was a wind.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Nothing here yet.
Alt account of Angeldog 2437.I think I can hear the wind, and some rain.
Eating a Vanilluxe will give you frostbite.Good grief, at this rate I'm going into work tomorrow. Is it tasteless to be a bit let down?
I'm a skeptical squirrelIt hasn't arrived yet.
The worst of the storm is on later Monday. It's only 9am. So the nasty bits haven't started yet.
A pretty fun guy to be around.I'm on the higher elevation in Staten Island so we should be ok for the most part.

My evening class is canceled so I guess it will be hitting here within hours. I wonder what is the deal with all the sirens I am hearing right now.

I noticed that there was no thread for this, so here is one.
Hurricane Sandy is a tropical cyclone that developed in late October this year. After raising hell in the Caribbean (where it was born,) it is now rapidly heading towards the US. This story is all too familiar to most of the Southeastern States, but Sandy comes with a twist: she's heading further North than usual, causing storms, strong winds, blackouts and flooding in states (including New York) that don't get tropical cyclones very frequently and thus aren't necessarily prepared for them.
I'm in Maryland now, and it is just starting to rain. What about all of you? How did you prepare, what do you plan to do while stuck at home, etc...
Hope our power lasts long enough to talk about it.
NOTE: The bit in green was added by a Mod. Without it, this was essentially a "link-discuss" thread minus the link. And OTC OP should include enough info that people can join the conversation after reading it without having to look up a bunch of stuff. (Since this topic is about a particular cyclone, I don't see a need to include a definition of that phenomenon. If this thread was about cyclones in general, though, it would be necessary.) Normally I (Best Of) would PM the person who made the thread rather than editing the OP, but maybe it's good to make some exceptions and give examples of how to improve an OTC OP.
