The animated series created the Gray Ghost character to take Zorro's place I thought.

Thus, Zorro isn't essential to Bruce Wayne's origin as Recursive Canon. One could easily have Zorro be both a film in-universe and have Bruce meet him as part of a time-traveling escapade, or a modern Zorro type deal.

The other thing with Zorro is that retellings of Batman’s origin have increasingly left out the fact it was a Zorro movie Bruce saw on the night of his parents’ murder. Probably because Zorro films are very sporadic and would increasingly date his origin. Batman Begins, for instance, had the Wayne’s go to an opera instead.

The Telltale series got around that hurdle by having Martha book the theatre for him since it was his favourite movie.

By "book the theatre" I hope you mean "purchased tickets for the show so that her family could enjoy it" because otherwise... goddamn rich people.

When my career takes off I swear I'm not going to be so vain as to buy out a goddamned ice rink or movie theater purely for my enjoyment. That just disgusts me morally.

She booked the theatre. Which depending on the theatre might not be all that expensive.

That said, She and Thomas were part of the criminal underworld in that universe so...

During a discussion with some friends on another site, I realized that Cassandra might actually be the happiest person in the batfamily at the moment, which is... interesting. Certainly a sign of how badly everyone else’s lives are going right now. Even Duke seems to be pretty grumpy, last time we saw him and Cass.

Bruce got left at the altar and has been on a downward spiral since. Jason got kicked out of the family and started shoving flares up places where flares shouldn’t go. Dick got shot in the head, and previews for his next issue show him being all edgy. Babs is apparently having problems with her spinal implant. Damian is working for Jason. Tim is off in Heroes In Crisis. But Cass seems to be doing just fine. She knows Clayface is alive, she’s got a nice place to live, she’s being tutored by Barbara, and now she’s got a new superhero team to be on. She’s the one person whose life seems to be going well for her.

In some ways the higher ups not paying attention to you is a good thing.

I mean, she is going to appear in a new series come December, so there's always time for tragedy to hit her like a ton of bricks.

Does Cass actually know Clayface is alive? I didn't think that was made clear.

On the topic of happiest Bat at the moment, Kate is also up there. She has her sister back and is caring for her, she's made amends with Bruce, she recovered from months of severe psychological and physical torment, and she and Renee are back together. It's definitely the happiest she's ever been, at least.

How is it that the Silver Age version of Batman seems to be the happiest version? Other than starring in a children's book. Which those comics were.

It was before the whole "you have to be damaged if you dress as a bat" thing, before his rogues really got into mass murder and that fact and the one of him not killing them kept being pointed out as loudly as possible.

I like Batman better as a children's character. Then again I don't like stories that are dark and edgy. Nor do I like Batman's rogues being turned into serial killers with a body count in the millions.

I do wish more people would say this outright instead of mocking any story as being "grimdark" or copy and pasting, "ow the edge."

I'm legit tired of hearing about how grimdark Gotham freaking City is as a setting.

Also, I like Batman when he’s dark, as long as he’s also allowed to be things other than dark and brooding. I really liked him in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. He was brooding, but he also had frequent moments of happiness, and he had friends, and he made jokes from time to time. He seemed like someone who had experienced trauma, but was actually recovering from it and moving on. That’s how Batman is in my head.

Then clearly you need to write Batman.

Why? Nightwing is supposed to one of the nicer members of the Bat family. He can't be evil if he tried!

Not evil but he's had his moments of being an asshole like that time he slept with Barbara and then revealed to her in the morning that he was getting married to Kory.

What. Can I pull Fanon Discontinuity on any time a good guy acts ooc in a jerk manner? Because I really don't like heroes acting like jerks. No one is perfect(except Jesus if one is a Christian, but fictional characters can still have moments that are less horrible than real life errors.

A new Young Justice book was just announced, and it looks like Tim Drake will be on the team as Robin (without the Red). I guess he and Damian are sharing the name now?
