[up][up] It's not the moderation's job to read every single post on the forums and check every single edit on the wiki. There's a reason we have a holler button.

Not what I'm talking about. We need mods who will punish people for being racist or whatever, and not punish people who call them out on it.

If we get more mods they're going to be wiki focused. Not forum focused. Tropers need to take more responsibility for pointing crud out on the forums.

Nothing wrong with calling a person out on it, constructively. But if you flame them, you're breaking the rules as well. Just report it and keep the snide remarks to yourself.

In like, the Martin thread, both the flamers and the racists were thumped which is understandable. I haven't read how it was handled in the thread Firebert linked.

How do you "constructively" call someone out as a kiddy-diddler?

You don't. You report it. Not everything can actually be responded to constructively.

If it's something that can be reasonably called out, you call them out to help them understand why you disagree with their issue.

Gave Draven some time off to think about how to have a conversation that doesn't make things worse.

...anyway. Fanfic recs.

Before this derail, we were discussing what exactly we could cut from the fan fic rec pages. I believe we got to "explicit stuff between people younger than the age of consent in the US" goes. Now, is that 16, 17, or 18 and how do we account for Romeo and Juliet laws, if at all?

Edit: Also, everything Firebert said.

Sixteen is the lowest in statutes, evidently. So 16/16 is as low as it goes. We don't have to pretend that fanfic has the same literary merit of any examples we might find of younger combinations in mainstream literature.

Honestly, I don't care about fanfic recs, and I don't think they're an important part of the wiki. We can and maybe should organize fan works by the source work, and maybe that should be linked to the source work's page too. But I don't really like having that feature merged with reviews.

If it were up to me, instead of recommendations, it would just be an index of all the fanfics and other fan derivative works for that work. Bulleted list. Maybe sorted into categories.

I feel that we don't need to have Fanfic recs on the site. It's just too much of a risk and a magnet for stuff like tropers pimping out their crappy fanfiction and very creepy and disturbing fics getting gushed about.

Seeing all these piss ant tropers trying to talk tough makes me laugh. If Matrix were here, he'd laugh too.

It can have far too many problems with it and just isn't worth the trouble.

Also, it's a lot like linking to explicit works: if Tropers really want to see it, they can Google it.

I'd be completely okay with cutting anything involving anyone younger than 16. More than thrilled, in fact.

I like the idea of having a list of fan derivative works, but only of those derivative works with actual pages on the wiki.

Crown Description:

There have been suggestions to forbid recs for fics that have certain content, namely illegal sex, in them, and due to the difficulties in enforcing such rules in practice it has been proposed to remove Fanfic Recommendations altogether.
