The Order of the Stick: Rules Discussion

Go To

This is the thread for discussing Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition rules and how they may or may not apply to The Order of the Stick.

Discuss away, and please keep it civil. Discussion of the comic itself — plot, characters, and so forth — goes here.

    Basic facts for context:
  • OOTS is a webcomic set in an RPG Mechanics 'Verse based on Dungeons & Dragons version 3.5, with a custom setting and cosmology, using mainly Open Gaming License (OGL) and homebrew content.
  • Tropers unfamiliar with D&D 3.5 may wish to visit http://www.d20srd.org/ to learn the details of the system or look up terminology. We will assume discussion to be about the D&D 3.5 rules unless stated otherwise.
  • The author has specifically stated that, while he attempts to work within the letter of the rules as much as possible, OOTS is at heart a story and story trumps rules. This is a cautionary statement against overanalyzing.
  • Any discussion of D&D cosmology should acknowledge that OOTS is entirely homebrew in this regard and nothing about it in any of the core rulebooks or supplemental material can be assumed to be canon.

Since I don't want to kick off any actual discussion with more of The-Spell-I-Shall-Not-Name, I give you the Dashing Swordsman for all your reference needs. (And a few laughs. Burlewski, anyone?)

I find it amusing how similar that is to the Legend Paladin.

This prestige class is poorly written. The flavor is fine, but how their abilities are described in mechanical terms isn't done very well.

I'm probably spoiled by 4th edition in that regards though.

Well, despite what the article claims, it would be a poor prestige class for anyone but a bard. Paladins tend to prefer heavy armor (due to how their class is built), and if I remember rogues lose out on a lot of key class traits by focusing on Charisma.

Just glancing over it, it feels pretty mediocre in general.

It's like most prestige classes in that regard: you have to build your entire character around it, and do nothing but take levels in it. As far as I know, Elan only took one level in it, so yeah, it doesn't help him all that much.

It at least lets him use his charisma instead of his strength at least.

From my brief overview of it, it's actually relatively front-weighted. Screw the last 8 levels of it, just go for the +saves and the like.

It's front-weighted defensively. Offensively, you have to be higher level to get the good stuff.

It's mainly for people who play bard aggressively as a melee class. And given Elan tends to be more jack-of-trades, yeah, it makes sense he wouldn't take it.

But once again now he can at least fight in melee with out sucking.

True, although the 3rd edition bard class itself was not built to fight in melee. It was built to stand behind the melee and provide support with songs and spells. I think people went a little overboard with thinking of it as a jack-of-trades, which is why 3.5 gave them armor. Not that it matters, Elan doesn't wear any armor now (I have no idea why).

Of course, this being the Order of the Stick, no one is min-maxed for anything. So Elan trying to overcome a class weakness rather than play to his strengths is par for the course.

...Will Turner is not nearly as Dashing a swordsman as Jack.

Then again, Jack's Charisma seems to be all over the place. At some times, he's a silver-tongued schemer, and at other times, he's got no bloody clue what he's doing, and looks the part.

I thought Elan had more then a just one level in Dashing Swordsmen,he's just ignoring for it for more levels in Bard?. I think it just hasn't been mentioned as in-story it doesn't seem to have any other abilities aside from using Charisma for attack and damage rolls, pun fighting and glass damage immunity.

It should be kept in mind that that Dashig Swordsman isn't necessarily the same one Elan took; indeed, Rich made up the class and has stated that he had no intention of releasing any actual figures for it because he doesn't want to limit his ability to give Elan whatever thematically-appropreate abilities he wants.

As such, barring a direct statement on how many levels in it he's taken, the figure's kind of unknowable. Though I'd be very surprised if it was more than 3.

Well, the real question would be how many levels did Sabine drain from Elan when he "sucked her face", and what class were those levels in. We don't know that yet.

Doesn't really matter, though, since Durkon cast a Restoration on him.
