[up] Did Steam ever lack a shopping cart?

Seriously, who throws a sale without providing shopping carts?

Nintendo. Though the eShop at least lets you buy up to €130 credit at a time, which makes things rather easier.

Steam may have had it's problems back in the day, but it also isn't just about repeating history or not but that, as systems become more refined, the basic standard of operation is raised.

So, I could create a AAA video game with amazing combat and level design, but I might get rightly called out for using low rez gif faces for the characters instead of modeling them out. Which, while that was a legitimate graphical short cut in early PS 2 games, we're several generations passed that and have the technology where that short cut shouldn't be needed anymore in the first place. Same as Anthem; they could have solved most of these problems if they just looked at their competitors.

So, sure, the Epic store has a massive learning curve in front of it but they wouldn't have such a massive curve AHEAD if they had done this stuff a lot sooner if not before the Epic Store even was published. Not everyone learns this stuff right away but we're hardly the first man on the moon by now.

If Ocarina of Time came out today, we would throw it under the bus because we've moved on so much in terms of graphics, mechanics, quality of life features etc. Epic store has had numerous platforms to emulate years and years' worth of features, as well as all the money in the world to build it. Some of their money would undoubtedly be better off spent on building the store and getting it up to standard ASAP rather than buying more devs.

So essentially it’s pretty’s much just because it was okay back then doesn’t mean it’s okay now.

Well, Steam had a ton of problems. But it was also trying out something new. Somewhat uncharted territory. Mistakes, wrong turns and pitfalls are to be expected.

This is 2019. That territory has been charted. We have the maps of the region. We paved straight roads through it. No excuse to keep getting lost.

I think Steam always had a shopping cart, or at least it did in 2013 or so, can't say for any further back.

The PS Store has a shopping cart with a 10 item limit but it HAS a shopping cart function, Epic. I'd say get your shit together but its hard for you to get your shit together when you've spread that shit liberally about your bed.

Sorry for being gross but fuckin yeesh.

Well I MIGHT check it out if its solely about Price being cool since he was the only truly good part of Modern Warfare but fuck reboots that name themselves the exact same as the original, I hate that shit.

See also: Prince of Persia, Doom. Doom is doubly confusing, because Doom 3 is its own thing, but the second game to be called Doom is intended to be compatible with the continuity of the original triad.

At least they went with DOOM Eternal with new game. Apparently has story reasons too.

There was Eternal Doom thing for classic Dooms years ago tho.

See also Mortal Kombat 9 which was just called Mortal Kombat, Alone In The Dark 2008, Bionic Commando 2009, the fifth Simcity, Dissidia Final Fantasy (2015), Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront II in the rare case of this happening twice, etc...

We have a whole page of them

And have to repeatedly change the titles of original works just to account for the dates. It's an annoyingly prevalent trend.

The Dissidia one really does bug me because I was really interested in getting into it (It's a final fantasy fighting game!) but I didn't have a PSP and never got a straight answer about which one's which.

All the others at least have decades between releases.

I have to mention Rebellion Entertainment and their Alien Vs Predator releases.

There's one for Jaguar, I think, released in 1994. Another one released in 1999 with a redux year later and the last one they made is in 2010. All are just "Aliens Vs Predator".

At least Monolith named the sequel to 1999 AVP... AVP 2. Not much but I'll take it.

Sometimes I wish reboot titles were criminalized, and title namers actually had to put an effort into making a subtitle for distinction.

@Shirow: Well to put it simply, PSP Dissidia is the original, Duodecim is its prequel slash update and NT is the PS 4 sequel.

Hint: Only one of those has a good version of Terra. But regardless, they're stupid but enjoyable, and have their own convoluted storylines, because it's not FF without them. Prequel's final boss theme is godly though.

tl;dr

Just like with television where niche channels (MTV, History channel, etc) had to become mainstream to survive, gaming media is doing the same (an example he brings up is everyone talking about the finale of Game of Thrones). If bloggers and other media sites don't use a wider net to get more clicks and viewers, then they can't survive.

Jim also mentions that Youtube channels seem to do stronger if the channel is focused on a singular aspect. As an example, he says that videos where he rags on shitty games gets him twice the amount of views compared to everything else he does. I can also echo that statement with my own channel; my Left 4 Dead 2 videos get way more views and attention compared to literally any other video I post.

Remember, these idiots drive, fuck, and vote. Not always in that order.

Personally, I'd prefer if the 'net was a little friendlier, but you know the GIFT...
