[up][up] Yeah, sounds good, I just wanted to be abnormal in some small way that doesn't really account for the game mechanics. But after browsing the roleplay itself, I'm not sure how it quite works so I'm going to decline myself entry, since I have no idea how the game would play on a forum.

Well, I'll be honest that I've never heard of skin-walkers before so I had to go google it. And what I've gotten is that they're some kind of native-American folklore witch that primarily turns into animal form by wearing the skin of that animal, but may or may not come with a slew of other abilities such as: possessing people through eye contact; vocally imitating any animal they've already been or a human infant; controlling or charming people with bone beads shot out of a blowgun, bone dust, a shard of clay with some of the victim's hair wrapped around it, or rattlesnakes. They're also apparently unkillable unless you use bullets dipped in white ash.

Okay, so I'm not going to accept him until we're both clear on what he could and could not do; and then I'll have to think about it. Up to me, I'd remove all the abilities except the animal transforming and one or two things directly tied to that. (Like being able to vocally imitate animals he's already been, but not Human infants.)

And I'm definitely removing any notion of him being invincible against anything except things dipped in white ash. He's probably extremely weak to such things, but other things can still kill him too. In fact, he's probably not all that much tougher than a normal Human.

So what I want from you is a list of exactly what you would want him to be able to do, without leaving anything out. (This would include things that he can do, but hasn't figured out how to do yet.) If you want to keep some of his abilities secret, feel free to PM it to me.

Any room for an Ax-Crazy Genki Girl in there?

I'll add a profile here. Please tell me if anything should be improved on- I've hardly ever written characters like this (laid-back, unmysterious, talkative, a bit airheaded :/). Needless to say I had a bit of fun with her, in an attempt for originality.

Here we go:

  • Name: Esther “Essie” Linscott (name generator :/)
  • Gender and age: Female, 23.
  • Appearance: Euro-looking (I was thinking Finnish or French)- rather short but fairly strong girl. Short jagged blonde hair, with boring brown eyes, a few freckles and an infectious grin- a vaguely European accent, due to her father’s upbringing. She is fond of berets and other nice hats, which somehow manage to stay on her head through force of will, it seems (actually hairclips, but I’m busy scaring the GM with her possible magnetic powers :D). She also adores ties and sunglasses and cowboy boots, though seeing as sunglasses are made of glass she rarely wears them into battle. Being a blonde, she obviously places much value in her clothing (practically the only thing she spends money on apart from artillery) and if anyone ruins her clothes, they’re going to get knifed in the face. Atop whatever outfit she's wearing, she's usually got a hunting vest loaded with carrying ammo, hip holsters for her smaller firearms, and a small, badly sewed pack of essentials (first-aid, water/snacks, cigarettes, hairclips, scissors, a few dollars lying here and there, etc). Either the SMG or the LMG is slung over the back.
  • Personality: She’s pretty highly strung, constantly chatting and you know, Genki, but due to her experiences with this Crapsack World she’s a bit more grounded and snarky than your average Genki Girl. When she smokes she calms down a bit (for some reason), and much of the time people have taken to giving her cigarettes to shut her up. On caffeine or drugs she’s absolutely insane. She smirks a lot and quite confident in her ability to kick ass, but is essentially a pretty friendly, righteous and enthusiastic character- to allies. The thing is, she gets a child-like, immature kick out of violence and death, and this combined with her utter hatred of zombies in particular, make bounty hunting her favourite past-time. She doesn’t take the job seriously, treating it more like a game and a way to take out her inner angst and bring out her inner child. It’s hard to explain, mostly because I haven’t quite figured her out yet, but you can be assured she’s in it for purely selfish reasons. Her response to violence is due to daddy issues, so I guess she’s essentially looking for a father figure -shrugs-.
  • Backstory: The child of a divorced marriage, Esther grew up with her father, who wasn’t a particularly child-friendly role model, though essentially good-hearted. She had an unusual upbringing, father and daughter bonding over hunting (though Essie usually just shot wildly rather than aiming), card games and his various military expeditions. When Esther was halfway through high school, her father was killed in action- rather than move in with her birth mother, she dropped out of school, cut her hair, and joined the military (somehow >.>). Being the blood-hungry kid she was, it wasn’t surprising when she was discharged for misconduct (which she doesn’t like to talk about), and disappeared under the radar for a while, getting involved with gangs and the black market for a while, which she also doesn’t like to talk about. After a while of that she put her violence behind her and was in the middle of trying to complete her education when the outbreak occurred, and decided to try to redeem herself of her wrongdoings, which her father would’ve disapproved of. And, yes, killing zombies and getting paid for it sounded pretty sweet.
  • Equipment: (excuse my lack of firearm knowledge and obvious Wikipedia grab) This kid loves her automatics and More Dakka. She revolves around using an M249 or SA 361, depending on the situation/job, though she prefers the submachine usually. She has two pistols on her at all times (Jericho 941’s, her father’s firearms) and a combat knife somewhere in those boots. She secretly would love to use a flamethrower, but it’s really impractical against enemies like these. Edit: 9mm calibre. Though the M249 uses 5.56...I don't even know what I'm saying, to be honest.
  • Money: A few spare dollars here and there. She basically blows all her money on artillery and clothing when she gets paid- why save when you could be killed at any moment?
  • Skills: While essentially being a big guy in function, she’s pretty damn fast and agile, dodging and weaving to avoid getting Infected due to her affinity for getting the violence up close- when she's not tied down by a bigger firearm, in which case she'll fire a shit load of bullets to make up for the lost thrill. Essentially, more firepower. Strategically, she’s not going to counter in all that psychological and statistical mumbo-jumbo- she’s best at figuring out the straight line between A and B, simple and clean. Of course, not everything’s this simple (rarely ever is, actually) but try telling that to her.

Nah I'm fine with public abilities,

  • Increased agility/speed in default form.
  • Skin-walking, I'll need your input on how much of an animals pelt/skin is needed
  • Communication with humans by looking them in the eyes.
  • The ability to imitate animal sounds.

  • How's that sound?
  • I fully agree with you on the removal of invincibility, you've already stated that monsters are killable with modern weaponry
  • And I still need help on that weapon.

Oh son of a- Meant to respond to Olivetree in the last post, but of course I forgot.

@Olivetree: That's okay. If you want to spectate or change your mind and want to try again, feel free.

@Aralyn: I like the character idea, but there are some things to address before accepting her. First off her backstory and age as accounted with the current timeline is a bit contrived/makes little sense. If she's 21 now and joined the military before the apocalypse, then that means she somehow joined the military at age 16 at most. Military signup ages are 17 if you have parental consent, and 18 if you don't. (These probably changed a year or two after the start of the apocalypse, though.) Not to say that she couldn't have somehow tricked them into thinking she was older, but that seems unlikely. Especially given that you've described her as short.

Next her choice of equipment and skill combo is a bit... I wanna use the term "munchkiny", but I doubt that's what you were going for. Still, unless she usually leaves that M249 and the ammo for it behind, her being fast and dodgy while carrying one of the biggest man-portable weapons available and other equipment is unlikely. She can either be fast and dodgy without the light machine gun, or she can be a firepower house with it; she can't really be both. She can keep it, just again, will have to leave it behind if she wants fast and dodgy.

And as a side note, bandoliers can work if you use them properly. Think less individual bullets, and more things like full magazines or grenades. (Though this would add to her equipment weight.) Those bandoliers with individual bullets are only really useful if you're using revolvers, and even then you'd be better off with speed loaders.

Now, I might accept her without any changes if you don't feel like changing anything. But I'm gonna give you a chance to think it over based on what I said above and change anything if you want first, before I do that.

@Baruta: That sounds about fair, based on the mythology. For the animal changing I'm gonna go ahead and rule that he'd need most of the animal skin, and they'd need to be mostly in-tact. (Things like the head or feet missing, and holes from weapons would be okay.) So just putting on something made of wool or leather is extremely unlikely to turn him into a sheep or cow. The beaver hat from his backstory would probably have to have been an actual old-timey full beaver pelt hat rather than a top hat.

Plus I'll go ahead and keep the white ash vulnerability, since it's actually pretty unlikely that it'll ever be used against him. He might not even know about it, based on how much research into skin-walkers he's managed to do, but he would know that touching white ash makes his skin numb for some reason.

As for the semi-auto shotgun? Well, the Benelli M4 is probably one of the most common ones; probably civilian issue if it's from a mere gun store, so it'd hold five 12 gauge rounds. (Four in the internal magazine, one in the chamber.) If that's not your style though, there's a wikipedia page on semi-auto shotguns you can peruse at your disposal.

Anyway, this post is me managing to grab a bit of time before work. I'm not going to be around the main thread until much much later.

Nah, I'll change mine. I wasn't sure what I was going for anyway, and was sort of throwing all my ideas at the post and hoping it made sense.

I was going for making her young- I guess she thinks she knows everything about the world and has decided she'll just play with the natural order like it's a game. SO I tried to make her as young as possible- but it was 1am, and I got the maths pretty wrong. I had her as 23 but that felt a bit old. Anyway, I pushed her back to 23, and hopefully that might be just pushing it but not bad.

[lol] I wasn't going for munchkin-y, more just heavy artillery and firepower, but not stuck on the ground. To be honst, I was just throwing up between the M249 and the SA 361, so I just chucked them both in. Can she be both at different times (when she can't jump into the fight with the SA, she goes all the way with firepower with an M249, if you pardon my extremely awkward wording)? If not, I'll change that.

How much would bandoliers loaded with grenades/magazines affect her speed and agility? I have a pretty good idea but I'm not sure if its correct.

And I noticed I made her enthusiasim-ness sort of vague. I had the idea that she had a trigger hair temper, and was very impatient. I guess more hot-blooded than Genki Girl then, but she's still channeling the Genki Girl Vibe.

I have to go to work now, but I'll come back sometime to finish editing.

Yeah, her being 23 now would certainly make a bit more sense.

The bandoliers weighing her down would depend on what they're loaded with, how much of it they're loaded with, and whether the bandoliers are the only place she's storing ammo/equipment at. (Belt holsters are most common for pistols and pistol magazines, so I would assume that's most likely where she has those. But hip holsters, torso holsters, and even some ankle holsters for pistols also exist.)

As for her being both fast and a powerhouse at different times? Well yeah, but it's not as simple as just switching weapon since the setting doesn't run on video game logic. (... Well, okay, it doesn't entirely run on video game logic.) When I said leave behind, I meant leave behind; just putting the light machine gun away on her back doesn't make it magically stop being heavy and cumbersome. She would be a bit more maneuverable without the thing sticking out in front of her, but she wouldn't be all that much faster. Though to be fair, she could afford to go more at full speed while still shooting. Since accuracy loss while moving with and SMG or pistol, while still bad, are nowhere near as bad as it would be with an LMG. In fact, in order to do anything other than aimless spray and pray with the LMG, she pretty much has to temporarily ground herself whenever she starts shooting.

Anyway, I too must be off for work now. Hopefully I didn't make some grievous or offensive mistake in this post, as I will not be able to edit it until much later tonight.

For now, ciao.

That's what I meant, though- she revolves around the LMG and SMG depending on the job (I'm assuming Bounty Hunters are like mercenaries in a fashion, right? They get situations or targets they have to take care of, and can prepare beforehand, right? Or not? :D). She obviously doesn't lug both of the guns around on her back- that'd be absolutely stupid, even for a thick-headed blonde like her [lol] So if she can manoeuvre with an SMG, she's going to want to get right into the action, and then she'll be fast and dodgy, and if she's tied to the ground with an LMG, she's going to go for a shitload of shooting to make up for the thrill.

If that's too much, I'll cut it down. No pressure smile

Also, she is pretty inaccurate, but she goes for More Dakka rather than accuracy anyway.

If I may ask, how else would one carry ammo/equipment?

As long as you don't personally attack me, I'm protected from offence by the fourth wall :)

(I'm assuming Bounty Hunters are like mercenaries in a fashion, right? They get situations or targets they have to take care of, and can prepare beforehand, right? Or not? :D)

Yes, and no; it depends. Bounty hunters in this setting are private contractors who can also go out and do independent work without any sort of job or contract. When given a specific job or contract by someone, it's up to the bounty hunters to ask for any available information and plan ahead. Otherwise, they'll usually just be going out hunting or looking for monster nest locations to plan to assault later when better equipped. It varies greatly as bounty hunters aren't really tied down to any specific rules. So from job to job and location to location, all sorts of various factors can change what they do, as well as what they choose to do themselves.

As for where to carry ammo and equipment? Well, all sorts of places for most things. The best setup would probably be a military one: large weapons slung across the back when not used; ammunition for the large weapons fitted into special pockets on the front of the chest; sidearms holstered on the belt or hip, and ammunition for sidearms attached to the belt. Of course, that usually requires special equipment such as the armor vests specifically made to hold ammo at the front.

Since such things are not always readily available and the characters aren't working for the military, it usually comes down to whatever you can get your hands on: Hunting vests are a good choice as they sometimes have special places for ammo or equipment on the chest; most gun stores would come with the typical belt holsters for pistols and pistol ammo, and might include side torso holsters, hip holsters, and even ankle holsters; if strapped for options a large coat with many pockets will at least let you keep more ammo, even if it's less organized; homemade straps or clothing additions can be used to hold ammunition or some equipment; large weapons will hopefully have a strap so they can be kept on the back or behind the shoulder, and if they don't one could possibly be made; a backpack can be taken to hold additional ammo and supplies, but wouldn't be as instantly accessible; if you can get or make them, bandoliers provide another way to have ammunition or equipment attached to the front of the chest.

Really, it kinda comes down to the imagination. Perhaps pretend that you had to pick items from around your house and/or a nearby store to use to carry as much with you as possible while keeping your hands free to hold a weapon. (Or two weapons. Or a weapon and a flashlight. Etc...) The bounty hunter arsenal as I've imagined it comes down to a combination of salvaged items specifically meant for the job, and things cobbled together to do the best they can otherwise. Some are more luckier than others with their arsenal.

Oh, and to note the default model scorpion SMG (the SA 361) isn't actually all that big. A bit over ten inches with the stock closed means it could potentially fit on the hip instead of having to go on the back, though the functionality of that would depend on where the pistols are being kept.

Anyway, let me know once you're satisfied with the edits to her sheet.

Looks good to me; I like the addition of the "badly sewed pack".

So then, I think I'll give Esther “Essie” Linscott the Official Seal of GM Approval for Entry(TM).

Be sure to check the first post of the discussion thread if you haven't already, as it contains some additional info you might want before jumping in. Once you've done that, now is actually a time I had set up for newcomers to get in, so you're in luck. (Esther probably would've been traveling down Chester Avenue and heard the gunshots, I'd guess anyway.)

And once Baruta is back, he'll probably get approval if he's fine with my idea for his powers and once he settles on a shotgun. Based on the times I've seen him on, that may be after I've gone to bed though.

Is this still open? If so here is my sign up:

Name: Alix Renault

Gender/Age: Male, 17

Appearance: Alix has blonde hair, blue eyes and pale skin. He is of average height and build, originally from Britain he has a slight British accent. He has several scars on his body due to his risky fighting style.

Personality: Alix is usually fairly quiet, however he is also quite aggressive and can be cruel and sadistic. He is somewhat unstable and delights in causing pain and drawing blood from his foes. He has a tendency to rush into combat and has a very quick and deadly fighting style usually beginning a battle by throwing knives before closing in for the kill with more knives at a closer range. When his knives aren't working Alix switches to a pistol that he carries with himself for backup however he views this as less fun than fighting with knives, this does put him at a disadvantage when fighting multiple foes.

Backstory: Alix was 12 when the apocalypse occurred, his family was slaughtered while they slept by a small group of undead that had managed to get into the house, Alix killed them off one by one using his superior speed to his advantage. He has been residing in the Fairfax community as a scavenger since.(if this is ok with you? I figured the group could meet him when investigating Fairfax but if that isn't ok I can change it)

Equipment: Ten different knives of varying shapes and sizes, he reserves the two largest for close ranged fighting while the other eight are more suited to throwing, each of the knives have been washed in holy water. He also carries a light mobile pistol, a Glock 19 that he found in an old police car. Alix also has a 2m length of thin silver chain.

Money: $27

Skills: Alix has an almost unnaturally high agility, speed and accuracy. He is also quite acrobatic capable of performing flips and other feats. He is also quite stealthy and can go unnoticed by most people, this ability isn't as effective against enemies with heightened senses.

I'm just wondering if the RPG has started yet.

Name: Dr. Samuel Thomas

Gender: Male

Age: 27

Appearance: Relatively tall, Caucasian, dark hair, glasses. Usually wears button-up shirts, trousers with suspenders, and a dark green badass longcoat, which he wears a cross around.

Personality: Despite his past, Sam is rather cheerful, and cracks a joke at most available opportunities.

Backstory: After Sam's fiancee was seduced and bitten by a vampire, he was forced to kill her to save his own life. Later on, he went into the vampire hunting profession to save others from the same fate, and hopefully find a cure for those who haven't been killed by him.

Equipment: Usually uses a fairly lightweight falchion when dealing with supernatural stuff, and has a 9mm Beretta. Drives a black van with various equipment in it, most prominently a machine gun, a homemade knife launcher, and a foldable bed.

Money: 25.17 $

Skills: Sam almost exclusively hunts vampires, so he has more knowledge on the subject than most people. Has a Ph.D. in linguistics, and speaks English, French, Spanish, and Russian. Also, he is rather proficient at parkour.
