Inspired by listening to the famous Ear Worm for 3 minutes straight, I decided to check the TV Tropes page for Nyan Cat. I wasn't expecting to be empty (par for the course), and, more importantly, locked (kinda unusual). Anyone has any thoughts on the lock? ~nyan

It's simple: we avoid meme-specific articles. They are excruciatingly painful to have to deal with. Popular memes are listed in Memetic Mutation. You'll notice that we do have some meme pages but we are forbidding creation of new ones unless they ascend to actual Tropedom. We'd prefer to get rid of some of the existing ones too but that takes time and effort.

[up] What do you mean by painful?

First, the pages themselves have a tendency to become Self Demonstrating Articles, which often makes them an unreadable mess. Second, people try to shoehorn the memes in all over the wiki, especially using Sinkholes, stingers, and nattery sub-bullets. If the meme can be wicked to, it is ten times worse.

Memes are never as cool or as durable as people want them to be in the heat of the moment.

Also, memes (usually) aren't stories, so there's no reason for us to catalogue them in the first place.

Because pages like Pretty Cool Guy end up getting shoehorned and sinkholed wherever they doesn't fit lulz

. Mentions of the words "pretty cool guy" or "pretty cool chick" were sinkholed even though they had nothing to do with the meme (not that they should at all, of course).

Memes bad in general too. Just look at what was on Redundancy.Video Games:

Every single second level bullet I removed for being irrelevant garbage. Memes on TV Tropes: pointless, pernicious, and trite.
