Since when are we getting rid of The Far Side pics?
First I've heard about a Far Side purge, too.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyTwo reasons: 1) Gary Larson has long made it clear that he does not appreciate having them out on the 'net, and 2) virtually all of them are one-panel comics so any that we use as page images are running into the "uses the entirety of the work" copyright-infringement problem.
...if you don’t love you’re dead, and if you do, they’ll kill you for it.Yeah, it's not so much as "Purge all Far Side comics" so much pretty much every Far Side comic is a copyright violation by nature of being a single panel comic.
Reaction Image RepositoryMeh, seems fair enough. This doesn't really seem like an example anyway. Cow tools are, from my understanding, background items that are just there for show. The actual cow tools in the pic here are right up front.
Seems contrary to the nature of the trope.
For reference, this is the page in which Larson makes his feelings about usage of his cartoons on the Internet clear. (From the Tethercat Principle IP thread.)
Now that that's all cleared up, any actual suggestions?
If we want to use a Larsen panel within the limit of Fair Use, we will. Larsen's feeling about it nothwithstanding. Let's don't pull something of his unless it violates Fair Use.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyOkay, but doesn't using the whole comic violate Fair Use on this wiki? Far Side comics are almost always one panel, and we're using that one panel.
Rhetorical, eh? ... Eight!Yes, if the one panel is the whole thing, we can't use it.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyThat's the biggest reason we don't use Far Side images. Because they're all one panel.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickSince the thread are getting merged:
Should we stop asking artists (especially on Devianart) for their permission? Since we don't have to abide by it.
They are subject to Fair Use, like everyone else. If you want to ask, ask. Even if they say yes, though, we still have to apply Fair Use.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyWe ask on Dev Arts because we're tending to use the whole image. Thus we need permission. That's why. If they give their permission, then we're free to use it. That's part of how fair use works.

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickOnly if we can prove the permission was theirs to give and that the document giving the permission was actually from the rights holder. Much safer to stick with Fair Use. If we have its-the-entire-work images from anywhere, it should be removed.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyIt should be noted that a lot of existing trope pictures would be hard to argue under fair use. (For instance, our page pictures taken from Magic The Gathering are often the entirety of a painting by some artist, lacking only the card border.)
That's Feo . . . He's a disgusting, mysoginistic, paedophilic asshat who moonlights as a shitty writer—Something AwfulWe might want to break that discussion off into a general fair use topic so we don't have to go find the Cow Tools discussion when we want to talk about the reasoning behind certain policies.
That said, do crops still count?
Fight smart, not fair.Even if keeping the current image weren't a problem, it still seems like a better one is easy to find. One that makes it clear at a glance that the trope has nothing to do with cows, and that the implements aren't usually the focus.

If I understand the law correctly, Fair Use doesn't prohibit the use of the entire work—it's more like "more of the work than necessary". It's not as if we're posting PDFs of whole Far Side collections here; a single strip is, like, the minimum we could possibly use.
All images are protected by copyright, so if we can't use the entirety of a single-panel comic, how come we're allowed to use the entirety of, like, photographs and promo posters and stuff?
Rhymes with "Protracted."Photographs do get challenged and taken down. A scene from a film is a photograph, but it is easy to establish it is not the whole of the thing. Movie posters are intended to be presented without fee.

Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyI still feel like we have at least a reasonable claim for fair use.
Rhymes with "Protracted."Yeah, but it is a slam dunk if we don't use the whole of a thing. Somebody who can afford lawyers can figure out what is 'too much' of a thing.
Goal: Clear, Concise and WittyWe've got law students on the board somewhere, I don't remember where though.
Fight smart, not fair.I'd like a second opinion.
Rhymes with "Protracted."
I know it's the trope namer, but we're getting rid of all the Far Side pictures, right?
Shouldn't be too hard to find a replacement. The first thing that came to mind◊ was the Bat-cave.◊
