Would De Evolution Device work better?
Fight smart, not fair.Yep, that'd be just as fine.
The guys working on the YKTTW specifically changed it from De Evolution Ray to Devolution Device to be broader, since Ray Gun is just the way it's most commonly used.
Does this count as a typo name change (I believe those are free)?
Fight smart, not fair.If it's just a matter of clarifying a mistake in the launch, go ahead and do it. De Evolution is going to be trickier to type, though, not to mention ungrammatical; "devolution" is the correct term.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I have to admit, the correctly spelled version is easier for me to understand than the made up spelling. It also is far less awkward to type.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickIt wasn't a mistake on my part. That's what the YKTTW was retitled to, while I initially made the YKTTW under the name De Evolution Ray. De Evolution is easier for me to remember since that's how it's pronounced.
Fight smart, not fair.Maybe avoid both the made-up word and the one that means something else: Backwards Evolution Ray?
Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.Hmmm... I had never heard of "devolution" as a political term. Oh well, +1 to dictionary. Anyway, seconding the "Backwards Evolution Device" idea. Also wondering if Inverse Evolution Device would make for a searchable redirect?
Fanfic Recs orwellianretcon'd: cutlocked for committee or for Google?Let's run a crowner then. For the record, unless it's picking up some serious inbounds, use and misuse aren't there for it to miss because it's so new.
Edit, it also seems I forgot to crosswick examples. Any objections to the other two trope names launched at the same time Goal-Oriented Evolution and Evolution Power-Up before I go out and cross wick the shit out of them?

Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickThe current name couldn't be more clear. I've never heard devolution used except in the "backwards evolution" sense. No need for a rename.
"Did anybody invent this stuff on purpose?" - Phillip Marlowe on tequila, Finger Man by Raymond Chandler.This.
Don't really see a problem.
Is there anything else about this trope that needs discussion?
No, hollering for lock.

Crown Description:
Vote up for yes, down for no.
I'd like to suggest swapping this with its clearer redirect. Devolution, while it is a biological term, is more widely known as a political process. This does make it unclear at first blush as to what the trope is about. Swapping it with the redirect removes that confusion and clarifies the trope meaning.
