X-Men In General

Go To

This thread's for all of the X-Men comics and spin-offs (X-Force, X-Factor, New Mutants etc.), whether they're decades old or brand new.

  • Apart from the main Marvel Universe titles, Ultimate X-Men, X-Men 2099, X-Men "What If?" stories, crossovers, guest appearances in other books, Alternate Universe tales and things like Marvel's manga adaptations are all on-topic here.
  • X-Men 'family' books are on-topic (as are their own crossovers, guest appearances etc.) - e.g. Wolverine, Deadpool, Ms. Marvel and Cable.
  • Characters and comics that originated in X-Men and its related books but are no longer connected to the franchise are not on-topic, unless you're discussing historical connections and crossovers. If in doubt, check before you write a long post. If this isn't the right place, there's a more general Marvel Comics thread which covers them.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about their X-Men related stories here.

Discussions that are only about X-Men adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics. When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original OP
Okay, it seems to me that the thread on "X-Men: Schism" has run its course, and since everyone seems to be commenting on how the conversation is talking about general parts of the franchise, I guess I should start a thread talking about all that.

I have to say that the X Men franchise has been going on for decades. Maybe not as many as the Superman franchise has, but it still has quite a number to it.

One thing I am certain of is that the franchise seems to be subverting Status Quo Is God in recent years. Magneto and Professor Xavier seem to be fading into the background, with Cyclops and Wolverine taking their places. A lot of villains associated to the X-Men have been killed off and have actually stayed dead so far.

All this gives me the general impression that the franchise is trying to reinvent itself. Do you think that's what's going on here?

The U-Men as stand ins for cultural appropriation would be a good metaphor.

[up][up] Yeah, I think the people who know Ted Roberts are me and Ed Piskor. But I like me some deep cuts.

[up] I assume that was what Morrison was going for with them.

Also on the list of X-Men comic demands: Dazzler tour comic; mini about how Mystique and Destiny met and fell in love; an ongoing by Leah Williams, I don't even care what it is, just give her an ongoing. (My preference would be a New Hellfire Club series, with Emma Frost as the leader of a new Hellfire Club that includes Madelyne Pryor, Monet, maybe Deathstrike, one or two others. A bunch of boss-ass bitches, gettin' shit done and being fabulous while they do it.)

Just as long as they're not the Hellfire brats.

[up] Yeah, I'll be happy if none of them are ever seen again.

But yeah, Emma as leader of a new Hellfire Club, one that is ruthless in using its wealth, power and influence to protect and promote mutant rights, is an idea that feels too good to leave just as a group of antagonists in Uncanny or whatever. Emma's awesome, she can absolutely lead a team book. Let Leah Williams write it, because I don't know that a bigger Emma fan even exists. Kris Anka would be the obvious choice as artist, given he's also a massive Emma fan, and given his love of fashion would make for some killer lewks for the whole cast. (Even better if he gives the characters aesthetics rather than costumes. I've never liked the idea of Emma having a costume.)

Leah Williams/Kris Anka New Hellfire Club ongoing. We've been good. We deserve this.

On the Hellfire Brats, anyone else think it'd be hilarious if there was a story where Shaw or some other classic member offhandedly mentions he had them killed for making the group look bad, or something like that?

What was up with the Hellfire Brats exactly?

[up] Presumably, Aaron thought it'd be subversive to have kids who are evil and murderous. Thing is, it wasn't actually a particularly unique idea, so it was kind of an obnoxious concept, and at no point did the execution justify their existence.

I try to block out most of Aaron's X-Men run. I agree the X-Men need a new direction, but he took it in a Saturday Morning/Zany cartoon direction which is...different but it clashed pretty badly.

I do remember liking some parts so maybe Wolverine and the X-Men is worth revisiting.

Like what was their problem exactly?

Were they just way too annoying?

[up] Like I said, I find the premise of Evil Genius Children to be obnoxious in the first place, so that was a problem. They were written very much as hate-sinks. Obviously, we're supposed to hate them, because they're villains, but they were just such total shits that I just hated seeing them show up. They were really annoying, with this totally unearned cockiness. Add to that the fact that it's a handful of kids being presented as a massive threat to the X-Men, which in no way makes the X-Men look good. So the X-Men ended up looking stupid when a bunch of kids got over on them. And when the X-Men got a win, well, they got a win over a bunch of frigging kids, hardly an accomplishment to be proud of.

And, of course, it led to Idie, who was like 15, wearing the old Hellfire lingerie, which was incredibly uncomfortable.

So yeah, there was just a lot to hate about them. They were a bad idea, done badly.

Bet like Magneto's new Brohood the Hellfire Club has been dropped because of the Age of X Man crap with Emma in hiding or dead.

I imagine they'll show up at some point. They'll probably appear in Uncanny, and once Age of X-Man ends, there might be more of the Hellfire Club.

But they should totally get a series by Leah Williams and Kris Anka.

A Brotherhood of Mutants book would be amazing. Especially if they aren't actually evil, but rather super morally gray.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure Marvel had no idea how Wolverine came back from the dead before asking Jason Aaron to include him in the Marvel Legacy book with an Infinity Stone. And then Charles Soule wrote a mini-series (which was okay, not bad, but not great either), his resurrection had nothing at all to do with the Infinity Stones, so they asked Gerry Duggan to write another Wolverine mini-series that explained that.

All in all, I kind of wish they just left him dead. Old Man Logan is way more interesting than Wolverine now.

One villain I've wanted to see since the Morrison days is a mutant who is less of a mutant supremacist and more of a cultural and genetic bigot, someone who dislikes mutant-human couples and sees any offspring as cultural erasure. It turns into less of a battle of races and more of a battle of cultures.

Then again, mutants don't seem to have a culture in the Marvel Universe other than cowering in fear of the next genocide event.

I'd like to see a Mutant culture.

Like do they have any holidays?

I'd assume common cultural clothing would involve Sigil Spamming an X.
