Slenderman is probably the biggest example. And the most tragic.

I did a little writing/art for The Fear Mythos waaaay back in the day. The whole thing didn't really take off, though.

I think fictional examples are off topic. Personally, Im most interested in things that are at least semi plausible.

Creepypastas are basically modern day urban legends.

An oldie but a goodie: an XKCD cartoon by Randall Munroe listing real world mysteries across two dimensions: "Not that Weird vs Weird as Hell" by "Explanation seems pretty clear vs I Have No Explanation".

I learned about the Lead Masks Case and the Dyatlov Pass Incident from this diagram.

[up] Bottom left corner of the comic is easily the most horrifying. :D

I did that with a fancy ice cream cake once and I was so mad.

More on topic, also from the comic - the Salish sea feet are pretty explainable. It’s just a mix of decomposition (bodies come apart in water), buoyancy (shoes are more buoyant these days), scavenging (body parts inside a shoe are less likely to be scavenged) and currents.

Also, I think the Voynitch Manuscript seems pretty mysterious.

Yeah, but the question is, why there? It's not like we get an equal number of decomposing feet washing up on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Voynitch Manuscript is amazing. Probably never be decoded.

I’m guessing the answer to “why there?” is related to currents.

Time to resurrect the thread again: an article on Havana Syndrome. While many are convinced it's an attack on US diplomatic staff overseas, the possibility of mass hysteria shouldn't be discounted.

If it's true, it's practically an act of war.

The part about the crickets interests me. Are those bugs really that worldwide, or are they concentrated in certain locations from the initial reports and later cases of the buzzing sound being attributed to hysteria?

What would prompt Canadian officials to be subject to hysteria when it was thought to be specifically targeted at Americans.

Mass hysteria isn't a rational response to anything, it's a stress response. If you feel the symptoms and attribute it to the syndrome, that belief can spread.

It probably should be discounted that it's a weapon of the kind described, if I recall, that's not how microwaves work. Also, with the wide variety of symptoms, it's probably stress-related illness being attributed to attacks because "attacks" was the first thing it was attributed to.

Not that it makes much sense that it would be attacks, because if it were, what does non-lethally and covertly harassing a government employee do that's so useful?

And pretty much every report has been inconclusive, the "targets" have all been people in extremely high-stress departments, and as the article says, most neurologists think it's mass hysteria anyway. (This is not to discount the symptoms of course. But coming up with the explanation for them of "it's a weapon that started in cuba but then went to literally everywhere and somehow the weapon hasn't turned up on the black market or had the documents leaked somewhere despite being apparently transported internationally" seems like too many steps as compared to "someone has a headache while hearing crickets and told someone, and it snowballed from there.")
