Instant Awesome Just Add X is a Better With X trope. The mecha make an appearance in some (non vital) manner because mecha are awesome.

See, to me, Basquash would be Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha! if it were, for the majority of the series, about regular basketball teams, and then an episode of the series has an opposing team consist entirely of giant robots. But the very premise of Basquash is that it's basketball with giant robots. The whole show revolves around this concept. It's not a basketball show with mecha arbitrarily added, it's a mecha show that revolves around basketball instead of warfare.

I guess it would fall under "Sports show, with mecha", which would be the proposed sub trope.

So should we make a crowner for splitting?

@Deboss,

That's still just Recycled In SPACE...

[up] The point is that maybe Recycled In SPACE should be modified to be a supertrope, of which Recycled In Steam Punk would be a subtrope. Although this may be reaching the point where we need to open a TRS for Recycled In SPACE.

Recycled In SPACE is big enough that I think we need to split it into really common types like Recycled In A Sitcom Recycled With Mecha and such.

Ah... ok, in that context, yeah, Recycled In SPACE makes for a better supertrope and then the Everythings Better/Worse With and the Instant Awesome tropes can be subtropes...

But, yeah, we'd need a new TRS thread for it...

Actually, a thread for Recycled In Space sounds like a good idea. Entirely apart from the idea of making it a supertrope, it seems to be widely used as Recycled Only In Space - that is, I've seen things like Show X in space much more often then things like Show X with wizards.

So would it be better to do a trope transplant and make recycled in space a Sub-Trope?

Well, we already have Genre Blending, I don't think we need a trope just about Random Genre + Mecha Show.

It's premise + mecha, not genre + mecha.

And Film Noir + Mecha = Big O, A Little Princess + Mecha = Soukou No Strain

Gundam is more an analog of WWII than a recycled premise. And I'm not sure if the Evangelion thing was a joke.

As for Mazinger, it was practically the trope maker, so it was more a general recycled premise than recycling with mecha.

All three were a joke. My point is that you could apply that logic to any Mecha Show.

A show's premise more than you are claiming. Remaking The Count Of Monte Cristo with mecha is not the same as a very loose retelling of a world war.

[up][up] Well thats what Recycled In Space basically is except for its only being used for SPACE. The split off would make the Premise + Mecha a subtrope of that.

You know, Big O is more genre mixing than a recycled premise, so I think we can disqualify it from either trope, just to help make their definitions clear.

That was my point about it.

That said, Gankutsuou does count as this trope. As it stands, it's largely a sci-fantasy retelling of The Count Of Monte Cristo, making it technically Recycled In Space. It would qualify for this because the mecha are only really used for two plot-important sequences that aren't until after the series' halfway point, and a flashback showing that, yes, they are the standard war weapon of the setting.

I think it would be best if we restricted "retelling" to including not only a similar plot, but similar names. Too many people attempt to take shots at works they don't like by calling them the same thing because they use a similar plot structure.

Fight smart, not fair.

1. Duh. I was just agreeing.

2. Actually, that would make it qualify for both, if the mecha isn't a central part of that show.

The thread for Recycled In Space got locked for some reason, and it seems that the repair shop is at capacity (meaning an archive purge should be coming), so I guess we're making this thread about also fixing that trope until we can make a proper thread.

If you want to keep discussing Recycled In Space, then holler at a mod to ask for it to be unlocked.

Is there anything else to discuss regarding Instant Awesome: Just Add Mecha!?
