Crossposting from the China Thread!

The Venezuelans have spoken of Chinese mining. I'll address that. If I sound like Galeano, forgive me, his writing's really entertaining.

Soon, like the gringos, the Chinese will come with jingling pockets. They see your oil and grin like every last foreign investor that has approached in the past. But this is different. Gringo bosses like handshakes and drinks at the bar. The Chinese will speak of their old party values applied to a business sense.

Anti-imperialism against the white capitalists! Anti-colonialism for you! No, no, not freedom and liberty, not that bourgeois and anti-vanguardist crap, something greater! Cooperation! Lasting friendship!

Oh, what's that? You want domestic employment? Haha! No!

They've got a huge population and they're gonna give them jobs. They will migrate, work, settle down. They could get very rich in the mainland, but the party tells them go and they shall. As China gets richer off your resources and your mines, it starts to change, most likely. Businessmen. Rich families. Pretty houses in Caracas with manicured lawns and shiny gates so they don't have to look at the Other. That sort of thing Porfiriato-era Mexico had to deal with, with the foreign investors.

Also, it's infrastructure they'll be building, roads, bridges, dams. And your government has to foot the bill for all of it, or they'll be on your ass harder than the IMF on a sunny day. There's always several proper roads in every nation, even the poorest. Now think about how the hell you're supposed to pay for all that, every year, in increasing amounts from the government treasury.

This is the new imperialism that comes to Latin America, and it'll be just as nasty, if not even worse than the gringos squeezing your private sector in the 1970s-80s and the CIA running about starting shit. China wants its sphere of influence and that's how they're gonna get it.

And unlike the US, whose people are (generally, mostly in my experience) kind and open and warm and friendly and have always been ready to rise up in opposition when that brand of imperialism strikes, China never had that restraint. The party decides, the party orders, the party does. Business is business.

The only time things went well for us was when the oil prices were relatively low. All of our huge oil booms were wasted with MPJ, CAP I and Chavez. The oil prices are still relatively high, just not sky high like before.

The students of the UCV will march today. I hope things go well for them, the government's paramilitary groups were keeping an eye outside the university.

I think the relatively high oil prices is the only thing that can save us at this point. The economy is too fucked up like to even try to fix it the same way like CAP II tried to do, the only thing we can do at this point is unify the exchange rate and release the dollar, I'm sure things would get a whole lot better for everyone if those policies are followed long enough. I just hope the assholes in the opposition follow their word this time around, first get rid of Maduro, then elections.

Maduro follow the ideas of the great socialist Nicolae Ceaușescu

Or in other words, Maduro now is a open natalist and wants woman to have six children.

I guess he wants six children to ensure that at least one survive on his classic Insane Troll Logic

What does he expect to do with all those children? Eat them? God knows one of the issues they're facing is getting reasonable access to food and other resources you need to raise healthy children.

What a progressive hero, everyone. He's now going on saying women should be baby factories.

What next? Bunkerization? Naming Caracas Chavez instead?

And no, I doubt he would rename Caracas given his ideological legitimacy also comes from Simon Bolivar

No, not bunker mode, Bunkerization. That policy in Communist Albania where Hoxha had built bunkers more or less everywhere. Like, 100 feet apart everywhere. Decades later, they're still removing them.

US indicts Venezuela leader Maduro for 'narco-terrorism'

     US indicts Venezuela leader
The US Justice Department announced the indictment of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday for "narco-terrorism" and offered $15 million for information leading to his capture.

In an extremely rare criminal case brought against a foreign head of state, the department accused Maduro of being the leader of a cocaine trafficking group called "The Cartel of the Suns."

Investigators say the organization worked hand-in-hand with the rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), which the United States has labeled a "terrorist organization," to export hundreds of tonnes of drugs a year.

Maduro, Venezuela's president since 2013, and other top regime officials are alleged to have used cocaine as a "weapon" to flood the US over the past two decades.

The State Department announced 18 indictments of Maduro and 14 other current and former officials, saying it was targeting broad corruption at the top of a government it blames for the South American country's desperate poverty.

"For more than 20 years, Maduro and a number of high-ranking colleagues allegedly conspired with the FARC, causing tons of cocaine to enter and devastate American communities," said Attorney General Bill Barr.

"It's time to call out this regime for what it is," he added. "The Maduro regime is awash in corruption and criminality."

- 'Cartel of the Suns' -

Barr underscored that the United States no longer recognizes Maduro as Venezuela's legitimate leader, and referred to him as the "former president."

The Justice Department alleges that Maduro and regime figures supported a breakaway group of the FARC along the Colombian-Venezuelan border that has been involved in drug trafficking since 1999.

It said that four others indicted in New York — a former National Assembly speaker, defense minister, military intelligence head and general — were part of the operation.

They acted alongside Maduro as "leaders and managers" of the Cartel of the Suns, the department said in a statement.

...

- 'Corrupt' judge -

The indictments included updated charges against Vice President Tareck Aissami, whom Washington has already designated a drug trafficker, and the country's Supreme Court Chief Justice Maikel Moreno.

Moreno was charged in Miami with money laundering related to bribes he allegedly took "to illegally fix dozens of civil and criminal cases in Venezuela," the Justice Department said.

It's vile, all they're going to do is risk chaos in Venezuela. I want Maduro gone as much as anyone else but this is the worst possible time to do something like this, no one who cares about Venezuelan lives would do something like this.

All this will accomplish is create chaos which will benefit covid-19 and absolutely no one else.

I'm not really reassured by anything related to Maduro right now. I mean, even if his 'loyal' compatriots do end up selling him out, us getting rid of Maduro (as satisfying and cathartic as that would be) would probably accomplish nothing, they would just trade one figurehead for another.

There are all kinds of trash inside the Venezuelan Government, getting rid of just one will not change anything.

Jeez, being a buzzkill has never been fun.

Not just that, successfully getting rid of Maduro would be extremely disruptive, which would be terrible with a pandemic going on. However you look at it the Trump administration is being extremely irresponsible and indifferent to the lives of Venezuelan people.
