Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I don’t know if they would have committed for two movies but you could have had a movie focused on Thor and Jane reconnecting and introducing the Olympians where many of them are dicks but maybe Thor and Hercules bond despite a fight in which Hercules purples Thor’s nurples

And then a Gorr movie where you have Jane already established and Hercules ready to go and really dive into the gods being dicks. I dunno if you’d have to retcon in a past between Thor and Gorr or transplant the personal nature to someone else.

There is also the fact that while Gorr doesn't onscreen kill a lot of Gods, we see plenty of the after-results.

Lots of corpses, lots of names, Thor at one point begins investigating all the Gods who've been missing or haven't been seen and what follows is a montage of Thor finding bodies.

His first encounter with Gorr had him preparing for a battle with the Slavic Gods Perun and Chernabog only to encounter Perun's bloodied riderless steed and then Chernabog's freshly killed headless corpse. Investigating their deaths leads to Thor's first encounter with Gorr in a battle among the clouds.

We also see living victims, a God of the hunt half dead is left so he can point directions to Thor to Gorr's cave who Thor mercifully finishes off, and a God of bombs who escaped Gorr, Gorr cut off the eyelids of all four of his eyes so he can force him to watch him torturing his pantheon, and after driving him to madness Gorr forced to help him design the Godbomb.

And just everything about his slave-God empire where he crucifies Gods like Volstagg.

Huh. I think Perun and Chernabog respawned to be in the Winter Guard later.

I was also thinking that when I read the scene. Amusingly I think Aaron himself also wrote their respawn.

It does make me think what does Gorr do about Gods with reincarnating systems of revival or ones without a corporeal form.

Cause the story has him killing Gods for realsies through physical injury and they are all flesh and blood beings that leave slow rotting corpses.

I kind of assumed that's what the Godbomb was for. Just kill all gods everywhere, permanently.

It's interesting how the movie clearly streamlines a lot of the Godbomb story to fit Gorr's short screentime.

Like in the comics it's a pretty extensive plan. First he gains the plans to create the bomb from a bomb maker God, torturing the poor blokes whole pantheon to make him more receptive to help. Then he uncovers the hidden world of Chronux home of time God's where he forces them to perfect the time portal by slathering their time wells with their own blood (they travel through time by using their blood in the wells), butchering all of them where he goes back in time to get the heart of an elder God. Then he goes to the future where he spends 900 years enslaving God's to construct the massive bomb.

Keep in mind he's doing all this in secret. Thor only stumbles into his plot by pure luck helping the prayers of a little girl on a Godless world. Finding Gorr's handwork there he then sets out on a murder mystery investigation where he finds the threads and uncovers what Gorr is trying to do.

The movie simplifies this a lot. The Godbomb is changed to a wish from Eternity, and the only thing Gorr needs is Stormbreaker cause it has bifrost. The result is this changes the dynamic of thr story, where Thor goes from hunting down Gorr before its too late, instead Gorr spends the majority of the movie waiting for Thor to come to him. So all the proactivity with the character is lost.

Probably no point posting this before tomorrow, but might as well, here is the announcement for the new Deadpool and Wolverine trailer tomorrow:

Given the first trailer mostly focused on Deadpool, I wonder if this one will focus on Wolverine (the teaser certainly suggests it will).

[up] Call it silly, but an announcement for an announcement is a good way to build hype. If they just dropped a trailer, I would've been like "Cool, a trailer." Now I'm actually excited to see, and will probably watch it as soon as it drops.

I sincerely hope whatever person cultivated the idea of making a teaser trailer for a teaser trailer gets a fly in their meal that they won't be able to notice while I'm slapping the sh-t outta'em.

But whatever, I'm ready for this nostalgia train to leave the station already.

Ironically I never cared much about Hugh Jackman's portrayal of Wolverine until Days of Future Past. I didn't dislike him but that was when I appreciated him the most.

I'm still baffled FOX dropped the ball do hard - you married the old Xmen filns with the new Xmen ones so beautifully and 3 films later you made 2 films people disliked and 1 film that killed off the entirety of the Xmen cast including Wolverine.

That said - that part wgere Jackman went back in time and Mcavoy met Picard? This is the kind of comic book movie fanservice you want but rarely get. Like all 3 Spider Man actors turning up in No Way Home. I cannoy understate the euphoria of s movie whose plot combines one generation of a film frabchise's cast with another. That's not something you get often.

[up][up]Yeah, it's over-the-top and it's a shame films have to do this, but as all the well-received films (by both critics and audiences) that have still flopped show, marketing is extremely, extremely valuable in this day and age. Not that it wasn't always, but especially now, with budgets for films increasing (increasing the amount needed to even break even) and the price of cinema tickets increasing (decreasing the available audience).

Hope we see more of Matthew Macfadyen's character in the trailer. It's weird hearing him with his natural accent after so much of Tom Wambsgans in Succession.

Second Deadpool & Wolverine trailer tomorrow?! Holy Shitballs! surprised

Dare I suggest that part of the movie really is Wade finding out about the events of Logan and tries to avert it? (I think that might have already been suggested, but…)

So knowing Wade, given the incredibly meta character that he is, it's really going to be more of a case of deciding when he should pull the plug, and yank Wolverine out of being dead.

Hey we finally got Quantamnia's budget.

Ant-Man and the Wasp Quantumania had a total production budget of $326.6 Million, making it the most expensive non-Avengers, MCU movie. Due to UK tax credits, they got back $50 Million which brought the final total to $276.6 Million.

No wonder heads rolled after this.

I wouldn't mind seeing Hank die, but I think it should be in an epic act of heroism. If they bring Hank back for Avengers 5, that's where I think it would be a good point for him to leave the role.

Frustrated Hank, moments before his life is taken by the eleven billionth piece of Stark weapons tech to fall into wicked hands since his death: "Oh, you have got to be shitting me."
