Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I don't think Larson is specifically stating that Carol Danvers is gay in the MCU, just giving fuel to shippers. That said, it would be cool.

Carol x Maria would be cool, but given that Carol is seemingly immortal thanks to her tesseract/infinity stone powers it'd probably get weird quick. (forgive any spelling errors, I just had my eyes dilated and am relying on muscle memory and heavy squinting to read and type.)

If consent is given to either party, should it even matter?

Also, it wouldn't get weird quick. It would get weird after a long time has passed.

Carol x Maria would be fine given that they are roughly the same mental age. Of course, Maria would get old and die, while Carol would not. It's not quite the same as Thor dating Jane Foster, since he's already over a thousand years old at the time, making it a true Mayfly–December Romance.

If Carol dates Valkyrie, then you have a different kind of of weirdness, since they are both immortal but Carol is much younger in absolute terms. That said, Carol is an adult, so she can be presumed to make her own choices in that regard.

[up][up]OTOH, Thor has about the same emotional maturity as Jane, if not less.

I do headcanon Maria as bisexual. Monica exists after all.

Might’ve been from a donor. Dykes to Watch Out For showed this as an option for married women couples in the 80s.

It's possible she had Monica first, then split up/divorced the father because she realized she was predominantly homosexual and the relationship wasn't going to work out. Of course it's all speculation and there's no hard evidence in any direction to behave exclusionarily of other headcanons over.

Seems like Ms Larson is taking up Mr Downey role of lifting up the slash ships.

...F/F ships are also slash ships, right?

Now that you mention it, I think the fans tend to have a bit of a No Bisexuals mentality going on.

Not just from the MCU, but all-around. Seems like it is always "either-or" whenever a character shows signs of same-gender attraction.

Society in general tends to forget about the existence of bisexuality. I suspect part of it is that homosexuals are seen as more 'different' from a straight person and so attention is drawn to them, whereas bisexuals are more 'normal'.

Another part with media representation is if a story has a character in merely a single romance, their attraction to other genders can be odd. For example, in a story I was making (for a game) I was (and actually am) considering having the protagonist's girlfriend be bisexual. But, since said character is in a relationship with a man, it was hard to portray in a meaningful way. I did consider a gag where the heroes run into an attractive woman or something and the males can't help but stare, another female on the team declares All Men Are Perverts, but then the protagonist's girlfriend is staring as well. Not sure if that'd be a good gag or not, though.

I definitely see some of the characters in the films like Steve and Okoye as bi. And more, but it’d take too long to list where all the characters fall. tongue

Wow, I was really behind on this thread.

Regarding the Chris Pratt situation- it's actually a lot worse than it seems. While I don't think he'd ever truly want to support something like this, Hillsong has vocally praised conversion therapy and actually practiced it up until about seven years ago. Ellen Page is right that Hillsong is famously anti-LGBT to an extreme degree.

Chris Pratt seems like an overall good person, so I'm honestly kind of shocked that he's doubled down on the "my church loves and accepts everyone" bs when that's pretty blatantly untrue. The weirdest part was when he tried to use his divorce as proof that they don't discriminate, as if the church being nice to rich megastar Chris Pratt during a divorce (something that a lot of modern churches already ignore, despite explicitly being a sin) means that they don't actively discriminate against LGBT people. Come on Chris, do better.

[up][up][up]I dig, personally.

[up][up]Ehh, dunno about Steve, but Okoye definitely. IIRC, she dates a woman in the comics, and was shown as having a (very shoehorn in) relationship with that dude that has the same actor as the protagonist of Get Out.

Another one I'd like to see portrayed as bisexual is Thor, because the most macho character in the MCU liking men seems like a fun idea.
