Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Well, if you go by our standards, there are nine distinct tier classes. The MCU has shown eight of them. The only tier not represented is Class 7, and you have to be God with a capital "G" to qualify there.

I can only think of a few that would fit into 5 or 6, specifically Thanos with the Infinity Gauntlet, Ego, and Surter fulfilling Ragnarok. Hela, too, maybe. Peter Quill using his Celestial powers would count, but those aren't really part of his standard arsenal.

Aside from those, weights 1 through 4 are basically the same as the four tiers I laid out. Obviously, there are characters with a Super Weight of -1 and 0 in the MCU, I just excluded them because their fighting ability is irrelevant to fight scenes.

Regarding Mysterio, I'm gonna throw another voice into the "Mysterio should be campy" camp. He's the Wizard of Oz. The nature of the character is being an overdramatic showman who is much less than what he wants people to think he is, who uses stage magic and theatrical illusions to fabricate the idea of this awesome and menacing persona.

I'm glad the fishbowl is in the movie because this is the studio that brought you Rocket Raccoon. They can make the fishbowl work. It's ridiculous, but it's supposed to be ridiculous, and Marvel Studios is great at working with things like that.

Eh, Mysterio in that comics storyline goes into some really fucked up territory.

Gonna have to disagree with that one. Guardian Devil is Mysterio's finest hour, and its up there in the Top 10 of Daredevil storyarcs (even with its occasional stumbles, minor and major). It's a great story.

Its just that the shit Mysterio pulls during Guardian Devil is way too grim for the more light-hearted mood the Spidey films have established, so I'd imagine they'll stick to the other Mysterio's finest hour moment of Mysterio making Spidey think he's the size of an actual spider.

My favorite Mysterio story is basically impossible to adapt. It's called "I Hate a Mystery" and relies on so many specific plot points that were in play at the time.

The big ones being that Spider-Man had publicly unmasked during Civil War so everyone knew who he was, and also that he was working as a teacher at Midtown High instead of his "iconic" photographer job. Also, Flash Thompson was there as the gym coach.

So, Mysterio #2, Daniel Berkhart, attacks the school to get at Spider-Man. At the same time, Mysterio #3, Francis Klum, attacks the school to get at Mysterio #2, because he wants to kill him and make the name his own. At the same time, Mysterio #1, Quentin Beck, attacks the school because f*ck you, I guess. So it's Peter and Flash versus three Mysterios to protect the kids and get everyone out safely.

Also features my absolute favorite Mysterio moment: An illusion of Dracula abducts MJ, who was not present at the school prior to this moment, and whisks her away down the hall. Spidey stops, takes out his cell phone, and calls MJ. They have a brief chat about how she's fine, her day's going good, how is yours?

Then he pursues Dracula down the hall and he's just like, "Yeah, sure, go ahead and kill her. What do I care? Sorry, honey, but I'm sure you'll make a great vampire queen!"

It's a fantastic storyline, and also completely unadaptable because it's too heavily reliant on the complex web of continuity that is the 616. Though they can probably make the Dracula scene work on its own.

Mysterio's illusion powers would make a good opportunity to make multiple spidermen, just so they can make jokes about the clone saga

The very first Mysterio story (I think?) where he acts as Peter's shrink is also a pretty good show.

Odd character, Mysterio, that he has many of his best moments during the Lee-Dikto era.

My only problem with the "Guardian Devil" story is the fridging of Karen, as in my opinion the story could work just as well without that.

Otherwise, I agree with Gaon: it's a great story, but the Mysterio it presents is just way too dark for the movie side of the MCU.

[up][up] Not sure if it was his first story, but I did love "Spider-Man Goes Mad" and would love to see that adapated (though it's too small scale for a film).

In Daredevil Season 3, they act like they are going to do that (Bullseye, church, Karen, etc) and then subvert it.

Anyone think that Gray Gargoyle could work as a MCU villain? Looking up his powers they seem like they would work well in film, and I can see him carrying a film on his own, and the whole "turning people to stone" thing, though commonplace, is still a pretty terrifying concept.

Other way around, I think. Mysterio shows him MJ in the Dracula's clutches, but he (rightly) assumes it's a trick and lets her die. But Flash - either more or less Genre Savvy depending on your point of view - points out that it's always possible he could have been wrong, so Peter calls the real MJ just to make sure she's okay.

IIRC that story is an adaptation of his first appearance in the comics.

If this all does turn out to be “Mysterio makes himself look like a hero,” I wouldn’t be surprised if Spidey finds out about the deception partway through and - in reference to that storyline - Mysterio then counters by trying to make Spidey look like the villain instead.

Whoever wrote the MCU Super Weight linked earlier in this page is sorely overrating Powered Armor. It has most of them, even drones, at level 4, "Hyper Weight", when that level is described as "These characters typically can cause, stop, or reverse large scale disasters, break the laws of or flat out warp physics with their powers." By definition, they should fit at level 2, "Abnormal Weight", which includes the description "Most of the time, their ability is something we can mimic or even surpass using common science or low-grade cybernetics. Muggles and Irons that are Beast Men or Cyborgs may also end up here."

I'd put the low-end armors at Super Weight 2. The main Iron Man and War Machine suits should be 3. Only the Hulkbusters could I see at 4, and that's by virtue of association to Hulk.
