I think Mr. Stark was serious about making Peter an Avenger in Homecoming after he took down the Vulture. And being an Avenger comes with all the risks of fighting evil aliens and super villains.

Tony also got mad that Peter stayed in the ship, but at that point, there wasn't any way to get back to Earth and Tony had, like, no options at all. Even in the fight against Thanos, though, it looks like Spider-Man was there mainly as backup and support, with Strange and Tony being the main people to fight Thanos.

In Infinity War I think it can be pretty safely chalked up to the Godzilla Threshold at first, and then to "shit there is no way to get him back to earth" thing later.

Also: regarding Fury recruiting Petey, we don't know the context though. It could simply be all the Avengers are dead/missing/retired after Endgame and Fury is like "Hello Parker every other Avenger is dead so...congrats". Or it could simply be, as I theorized, that the Nick Fury we're seeing is actually a creation of Mysterio.

Also, notably, Spider-Man wasn't knocked out of the fight on Titan when Strange and Tony dueled him one-on-one. So what was he doing? Did Tony order him to stand down off-screen? Yes, I know he rescued the other heroes while the moon debris was falling, but that couldn't have taken so much time that he'd be totally unable to get back to the battle.

He was rescuing those guys and dodging the fallen moon.

He was very busy.

Worth noting that in the Ultimate line, Nick knew Peter's parents and was grooming him into a superhero.

There's this really heartbreaking speech he gives at Pete's death, which caught me off-guard 'cause Ultimate!Nick is on the wrong side of the Moral Event Horizon.

@Gaon: I like your theory that that’s not actually Nick Fury! I was considering the possibility of it being an accomplice of Mysterio’s using one of those face-changing masks from Winter Soldier, but dismissed it as unlikely. So it’s affirming to see that someone else’s mind was going in the same direction.

Maria Hill is also in the movie, so I think it's actually Nick Fury.

Unless they are both Skrulls. Or Maria Hill is a Skrull, while Nick Fury is the Chameleon.

The real twist would be if the Skrulls in Captain Marvel (2019) were actually the Dire Wraiths in disguise.

And the Dire Wraiths turned out to be the Durlans.

All the Skrulls are secretly Old Man Jenkins in disguise. Except then they pull off the Old Man Jenkins mask and it's actually Supremor.

I also really like the idea of Fury being Chameleon (or another Mysterio con) all along.

The only off part is that it would require Mysterio to just know Spidey's secret identity right off the bat.

Eh, Fury does shady sh... all the time. Nothing special about him involving a teen. And Peter isn't exactly a kid anymore. I mean, yes, he is, but there IS a difference between taking a 14 year old into battle and taking a something between 16 and 18 year old.

And no, it wasn't Tony's intention to involve Peter in the fight in Infinity War. The movie is pretty clear about it. Hell, he apparently relocated the whole Avengers headquarters closer to new York, just so that Peter could get a special suit in time should there be an emergency.

It'll be funny if we get a moment where Mysterio just tags Spider Man with a cheap shot from behind that Pete would normally have been able to dodge with his spider sense.

Especially if it comes after a moment where Spidey pulls off some impressive agility against the Elements or something.

Honestly, I really don't see how people doubted they could pull off the fishbowl helmet. It's basically just an astronaut helmet, and those look awesome.

Sure, but it looks kind of goofy if you wear it randomly. Water is a good reason to have one.

Just saying. Dr. Krauss looked great in Hellboy 2, and his head is literally half fishbowl and half gas mask.

I would totally be down for Chameleon showing up as one of Mysterio's accomplices. The face-changing mask tech from Winter Soldier should be a good set-up for him.

Mysterio is at his best when he looks kind of goofy. I love the fishbowl.

Honestly, I think four villains is enough. I know I just said that the number of villains doesn't matter, but unless it's like a Sinister 6 scenario, I think just Mysterio, Sandman, Hydro-Man, and Molten Man is a good number, especially if all of them are going to get some degrees of characterization.

Save Chameleon for the next movie, where he can be teamed up with Kraven, Doc Ock, and Scorpion, or something, since the Spider-Man movie seem to want to get literally all of Peter's Rogue's Gallery in there by just mashing them together into vaguely connected teams.

We still don't know if they are Hydro-Man, Sandman, and Molten Man, only that there are Easter Eggs for those characters. It might be that they are all just special effects Mysterio was making.

It would be interesting, though, if they did use those characters and just...never told us how they got their powers. Hell, make some of them into Inhumans — Hydro-Man in the comics got his powers from falling into an experimental generator in the ocean, Molten Man got his powers from spilling experimental liquid alloy on himself, and we already saw one origin for the Sandman (although in the comics, it's because he came across some sand that was radioactive and it bonded with him).

If they are those characters (which I'm betting they are, those easter eggs are there for a reason), I'm betting that the source of their powers is going to be that Mysterio gave them real powers somehow or that they all just had superpowers from various events prior to Mysterio recruiting them, and Mysterio specifically looked for people with earth, water, and fire powers so that he could set himself up as a guy with wind powers to fight them.

I'm betting the plan is for one of them to make a scene, Mysterio shows up to fight them, and the other two loot the abandoned surrounding area in their human forms. Mysterio gets fame and fortune as a superhero, and they split the profits among themselves.

What I actually thought would be neat is if they ARE Flint Marko, Morris Bench, and Mark Raxton... wearing mo-cap suits in Mysterio's studio. They're the MCU versions of those villains, but they don't actually have their comic book powers; just special effects conducted as part of Mysterio's plan.

Their Elemental Shapeshifter powers are a bit fantastic for the somewhat more down-to-earth MCU, so it might be a neat way to feature them in the MCU while sidestepping that matter.
