Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! I'm editing this OP and pinning it to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah, with Mjolir being dust, asgard gone I will just give a weapon to a human and be done with it, on the why he should entrust a punny human is.....questionable now.

When M'baku was announced, several people commented that the character could be done well because he was a lot more than just a black guy dressed as a gorilla due the fact many writers over the year added depth and nuance to him, but it's kind of funny how that was drowned out every time by the terror of "BUT HOW CAN THEY POSSIBLY FIX THIS?".

And then, after the movie came out, people hail the movie for completely reinventing the character of M'baku to differentiate from his comics's racist self. All the credit to the world to Coogler, but he didn't exactly invent the idea that M'baku is just a Wakandan traditionalist in contrast with T'challa's more progressive stance and that despite this, he's in truth just as patriotic and protective of the Wakandan nation as T'challa is. He just took it to a whole new level.

As I said, credit where credit is due: Coogler raised the bar by doing some excellent Adaptation Distillation on M'baku, but part of the genius here was actually doing his job and looking at the character's history past his name and working with it unlike other MCU projects which just decide to drop any character with a mildly challenging history (and probably make them a white person).

I despise Jane so if we’re getting She-Thor it better be someone else.

And maybe not force Thor to not use his real name.

In the comics, she didn't force Thor to do anything. He felt that he was unworthy of the name, so he gave it to her.

A nitpick, because it was pointed out to me previously: Ben Kingsley, light-skinned though he is, is half-Gujarati. His birth name is Krishna Pandit Bhanji. That said, he's still not Chinese and the character's definitely not really the Mandarin. Not disputing the rest of the argument.

[up][up] Eitherway he shouldn’t give up his name.

It’s his own name after all.

I mean, we can't have the "unworthy Thor" storyline anyway, since Mjolnir is already destroyed. And that was the hammer with the enchantment.

A Beta Ray Bill story is also tricky since Thor is using his hammer.

So were’re gonna have to get creative with this.

And I should've clarified: the Winter Soldier is the redemption of Bucky Barnes, a character so well-written he contributed more to the story being dead than being alive.

I'd put Gwen Stacy in that category too. It's been the case for a very long time that the only reason anyone cared about this character is because she died. Her death became more famous and a subject of more discussion than her life ever was.

A few great adaptational appearances and an awesome spinoff later (Spider-Gwen!), and people actually passionately care about Gwen now. She has legit fans now, rather than just being "that one girl Spidey loved but then she died and he moved on."

And an alt cover of her resulted in Gwenpool.

I mean, to be fair, I suppose a comeback was going to happen eventually.

There's an old saying: nobody, but nobody, ever stays dead in comics except for Gwen Stacy, Jason Todd, and Bucky Barnes.

Though with Spider-Gwen around you don’t necessarily need to bring back the original.

[up][up]No really, there is Uncle Ben and Magneto wife, those guys exist to die and stay dead.

To be fair, Gwen comeback was also because the adaptations make her too likiable, I mean she have moe chemestry with Peter in ONE movie that mary jane in three.

Only Uncle Ben stays dead for good. Until they invent Spider-Ben. And then death will be over.

As long as she's not being played by Kirsten Dunst, MJ can be scary even without powers. She has a mean swing with a baseball bat.

Edge of Spider-Geddon #3 actually has a pretty great story about Spider-Ben and Petey, a young Peter Parker who was bitten by a radioactive spider and then gave a blood transfusion to his uncle. They fought crime together and it was hella cute. Until Pete died, that is.

I just saw the battle of titan again and....I think we should applaud Starlord for thinking the battle plan, I mean is hard to see how much is his plan but is clear is line up to face thannos is his which considering they beat him is pretty damn impresive.

I mean that would make him so far the best strategist of MCU so far.

There's also a Spider-Aunt, where Aunt May swings around town fighting crime while Ben and Peter are her two guys in the chairs.

She once defeated the Vulture using her knowledge of baking.
