Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

They're all Fredo. Not a Michael, Tom, or even Sonny among them.
ABC News and WaPo report Trump's approval rating at 36%
...I guess that's kind of an accomplishment for Trump?

Disgusted, but not surprisedDid Obama ever get that low? Hell, that's close to where W Bush was when the Iraq war was at the nadir of its popularity and the Recession was in full swing...
Yeah, good luck with that Jenner, if you weren't a celebrity you'd probably be a felon right now for a certain MVA incident....
Besides, no way California is electing a Republican Senator in this political environment.

I liked it better when Questionable Casting was called WTH Casting AgencyWhite House announces new theme weeks amid health care bill uncertainty
http://www.politico.com/story/2017/07/16/white-house-theme-weeks-240605
Over the next three weeks, the White House will hold events pertaining to three vaguely defined themes: “Made in America,” “American Heroes” and “American Dreams.”
Now, Made in America week... How many here immediately thought of the Chinese MAGA hats? They don't come up in the article, but Ivanka does.
Ferre declined to say whether the president would use the week to push his daughter Ivanka Trump to manufacture products from her fashion line in the United States instead of overseas. “We’ll get back to you on that,” she said. Many of the president's own branded products are made overseas as well.
A Friday story in The Washington Post showed that the fashion line manufactures its products in foreign factories.
I think this is the wapo article mentioned: https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/2017/politics/ivanka-trump-overseas/
Remember how Trump slam Qatar and backed Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates after the latter two accused Qatar of publicly supporting Iran and Hamas?
Turns out the UAE hacked Qatar government and media sites and put that all up themselves.
That's the front page you linked to.
Avatar SourceNow all we need to know is who in Saudi Arabia knew about this.
So I was watching The Nineties, a retrospective show on CNN, and they were talking about Bill Clinton's presidency. You thought the Republican spite and obstructionism began with Newt Gingrich? Nope, it actually started (or ratcheted up, at least) in early '93 when they were drafting the budget. Apparently the GOP voted against Clinton's budget solely because they considered him an illegitimate president and wanted a second term for H.W. Bush.
What's my point? Some might say that Democrats can't see the irony in that Democrats in Congress NOW are being obstructionist, but the difference is that back in '93, the Republicans were doing because they were being sore losers, whereas the Democrats in '17 are doing it because Trump's agenda is legitimately heartless and damaging to the planet.

Yeah, the GOP never forgave Bill Clinton and anyone associated with him, especially Hillary, for "stealing" the WH from them. After Reagan's eight years followed by George's four years, the GOP became very much the Entitled Bastard when it came to the presidency.
Disgusted, but not surprisedGingrich was not the start of an irreconcilable divide-that happened no later than the crash in '87, and the Reaganites' refusal to accept any responsibility or reconsider their economic policies. Gingrich was simply the trigger man in the lead up to the '94 midterms, where Clinton's centralizing, conciliatory gamble exploded and guaranteed that what had been political colleagues became permanent ideological enemies.
I don't see how the Republicans can call the opposition party that doesn't control a single arm of the federal government, "obstructionist". The only obstruction is due to the religious fanatics, Randoids, moderate pragmatists, and extreme nationalists not being able to agree on shit.
Politics is the skilled use of blunt objects."centralizing, conciliatory gamble?" In reference to what action?
Look with century eyes... With our backs to the arch And the wreck of our kind We will stare straight ahead For the rest of our livesI would also like a briefer on early-90's US politics. Or at least a resource.
Avatar SourceAre you trying to apply logic to Republican thinking again?
The 1994 Midterms were called the 'Republican Revolution'. What Clinton attempted was what is generally accepted as 'Third Way' Democrat methods-a centralization of disparate political views centered around fiscal Conservatism. Reducing welfare and Social programs without necessarily gutting them, and other 'compromise' positions intended to extend the size of a party tent. It was a big reason he scalped so many voters from Bush Senior, and if it had continued it would have potentially fractured the Republican Party-along Social lines, by calling first dibs on most voters that thought with their wallet first and leave the GOP with the Evangelicals and a collection of fringe groups. Hence the Republican Revolution, with Gingrich leading the charge.
Logging off soon, but the Wikipedia articles on 'Republican Revolution' and 'Third Way Democrats' provide acceptable overviews.
Clinton was the spear-point of what we now call Third Way Dems, New Dems or neoliberalisim depending on who you ask. His administration kept with pro free market trends like deregulation and other conservative talking points like wellfare reform and balanced budgets.
@Ramidel It's somewhat ironic citing a Dilbert strip, given Scott Adam's descent into madness.
I guess it just goes to show how much a) people can change over two decades, and/or b) how utterly lacking people can be when it comes to self-awareness.

Disgusted, but not surprisedI bring you good news, for a change: Renewable energy is becoming so cheap the US will meet Paris commitments even if Trump withdraws
You may now proceed with your regularly scheduled politics-related despair
1 2 We are what we pretend to be, so we must be careful about what we pretend to be. -KVI am a bit comcerned about the spread of natural gas. Especially given that leaks thereof produce methane, a strong greenhouse gas, and that Obama-era regulations on methane leaks have been rolled back. I also think that author is a bit projecting far into the future.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanIt's simply a matter of how it's it handled.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy. If your average working or middle class type had to have McCain's operation would it be covered under the latest iteration of Trumpcare? Would it be covered under Obamacare? I think this is something that needs examination.
