Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

From a couple days ago but I thought it was interesting
MSNBC anchor: Is Trump 'trying to provoke a domestic terrorist attack'?
Trump warned after the weekend attack at London Bridge that killed seven and injured 48 that terrorism will “only get worse” if officials don’t “get down to the business of security for our own people” and end political correctness.
“We must stop being politically correct and get down to the business of security for our people. If we don't get smart it will only get worse,” he tweeted early Sunday.
"At least 7 dead and 48 wounded in terror attack and Mayor of London says there is 'no reason to be alarmed!' " he added in a subsequent tweet.
"Let's not be PC about this," Roberts said before first asking Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed (D), "Is the president trying to provoke a domestic terrorist attack with this Twitter rant because — only to prove himself right?"
And what will the Americans do when said attack happens? Go for revenge? Or do what the Brits did instead?
But whatever the case, it proves the abhorrence Trump has for the nation's psyche.
The only good fanboy, is a redeemed fanboy.NSA employee who leaked the Russian cyberattack documents to The Intercept has been arrested.

Okay, but her name is actually Reality Leigh Winner?
It's been fun.She ain't winning now.
It's one thing to make a spectacle. It's another to make a difference.I guess we're going to go back to this "noble whistleblower" vs. "dirty spy" argument, only the sides will switch depending on who benefits from the leaks?
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"It's probably good that she was scooped up. A person who leaks things to the Intercept could be a liability under a Democratic administration.
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die."Nevada's legislature just passed a plan to let anyone buy into Medicaid.
Nuts and bolts: If you qualify for Obamacare premium subsidies, you can put those subsidies towards Medicaid coverage instead. If you don't, you can buy into Medicaid at full price. This will make Nevada one of the first true "public option" states.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And federal override in 3...
"Yup. That tasted purple."They can try, but I can't see how they'd do it, short of cutting off Nevada's federal Medicaid funding.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"And that's if the current Federals even get what it is. I could see Trump just flat not understanding it.
Not Three Laws compliant. Then I imagine that's what they'll do, given what they already tried with the sanctuary cities. Cutting federal funding to lean on programs is something this administration is pretty eager to do.
It's been fun.x6 at least leak to the Washington Post or the Failing New York Times, and preferably not at work.
Also if in the future, you see a hotel chain of Comfort Inn clones called "American Idea" don't stay at them.
Trump Organization to Go Budget Friendly With ‘American Idea’ Hotel Chain
And while the Trump Organization and its business partner say the down-market move is not about politics, the president’s business is inherently viewed through that lens: The chain will make its debut in little-known towns in Mississippi, a state in the heart of Trump country that favored him over Hillary Clinton by a margin of 18 percentage points. The organization’s business partner in Mississippi is a family-owned hotel company whose co-owner met Mr. Trump at a campaign event last summer and donated to his campaign.

Frankly, I'd prefer not to have the question of whether we learn what sneaky things the government is doing come down to how sophisticated the leaker is at covert information handling.
I'm still not convinced that her name isn't a joke of some kind, though.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"So the NJ gubernatorial primary is today. Currently unaffiliated but thinking about going to vote after work today (primaries are closed to but unaffiliated voters can declare at the polls).
Who's up on each side? I don't live there but New Jersey is a pretty important state.

"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"Nevada has a Republican governor. One often - and for good reason apparently- called a RINO, but a Republican all the same, so I wouldn't tale it for granted that the bill passes.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAmerican Idea hotels? Pffft. I wouldn't be surprised if this fails harder than Trump Steaks.

Well if Chris Christie is any indication of New Jersey, any gubernamental positions sound like they might be a hot contest between the Dead Rabbits, and King Pin.
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesCribbing from nj.com:
Five contenders are vying on the Republican side: Jack Ciattarelli, a member of the Assembly from Somerset County; Kim Guadagno, the state's lieutenant governor; Steven Rogers, a member of the Nutley commission; Joseph Rullo, an Ocean County small business owner; and Hirsh Singh, an Atlantic County aerospace engineer.
Polls I've seen in the past few months via Wikipedia indicate Murphy and Guadagno are in the leads by a lot.
Also, the labor union just came by my desk asking for petition signatures and looking for more members - our office and most of the city is under a "boil watch" notice (don't drink it, don't shower, etc.)

Tell me those dont sound like mobster boss names
It has always been the prerogative of children and half-wits to point out that the emperor has no clothesIn all seriousness though, Murphy is considered the establishment guy - during the debates a couple weeks back Lesniak and Wisniewski had attacked Murphy (formerly of Goldman Sachs) as the Wall Street guy for wanting to establish a state public bank.
EDIT: found a more useful primary primer here and here on issues.

What we know about the Mueller Probe so far.

Given Mueller's reputation as an honest upright guy who will get to the truth, I will be interested to hear where this goes.
