Apparently a bunch of Trumpist have convinced themselves the whole thing was a Deep State plot to lure them into the open and arrest them, so they stayed away.

I do know Glenn Beck was warning about going to the rally earlier this week, suggesting it was a trap. Trump parroted him shortly after.

Does it really matter? The GQP simply no longer exists in the same reality with the rest of us. If we have history books a century from now and aren't swimming to work across the beaches of Chicago, this will be recorded as the greatest mass delusion in human history.

Well, just how troubling depends on just how big a percentage that group takes up. Given how few actually came to that rally, it may well be a fringe group at this point.

My general understanding is that the rally was a bust in part because we ended up having conspiracy theories widely spread about the rally. The rally itself was of course built on a conspiracy theory.
This is an example of why conspiratorial thinking can be self defeating.
AP News: North Carolina judges strike down state’s voter ID law
Two of the three trial judges declared the December 2018 law is unconstitutional, even though it was designed to implement a photo voter ID mandate added to the North Carolina Constitution in a referendum just weeks earlier. They said the law was rushed and intentionally discriminates against Black voters, violating their equal protections.
The majority decision, which followed a three-week trial in April, will be appealed, Republicans at the legislature said. A state appeals court had previously blocked the law’s enforcement last year. The law remains unenforceable with this ruling.
With a similar lawsuit in federal court set to go to trial this January and another state court lawsuit now on appeal, it’s looking more unlikely that the current voter ID law will be enforced in the 2022 elections.

The hard part for Texas is less the unconstitutionality in lower courts, it's the fact the Supreme Court didn't reject the enforcement mechanism. Ergo, the only way for anyone to bring a challenge against it is to break the law, wait for someone to sue them, and then challenge it in court.
Everything about it is unconstitutional, and the enforcement mechanism voids every provision explicitly listed in the Constitution by the back door, not just those described in SC rulings.
No wonder the public opinion of the Supreme Court has plummeted for letting that through. The only people that would approve of them are currently: A) living in a hole, or B) abortion-obsessed nuts detached from reality.

I'm talking about the voting law, not the abortion one that promptly eclipsed it in news.
Plus I'd say the name was poorly choosen. "Justice for January 6" sounds more like something Dems would attend, in the face of insurrectionists getting slaps on the wrist...

They really think they were the victims that day.

Now see, I was reading an article which said that other states are following Texas's lead at making not only similar abortion laws but also laws that apply the same concept (private individuals enforcing contentious provisions) to other things:
- Missouri for violations of gun rights.
- Tennessee for the supposed harm done by the presence of transgender individuals in bathrooms.
- Kansas for people supposedly hurt by mask mandates.
- Utah against websites that don't warn about the adverse impact pornography supposedly has on minors.
- New York against gun manufacturers whose products were smuggled into the state.
This particular Pandora's box is widely open already.

It's a way to pressure the Supreme Court to invalidate the concept.
Either they overturn it; the blue states start eliminating e.g. the Second Amendment; or they pick and choose what laws to keep and hand over an excuse to pack the court.
The question is if there's enough non-ideologues left on the right of the SC to realise what happens if they let it stand.

And it has to, between the interplay of unfavourable geography and half-baked redistricting policies in Michigan and aggressive Republican efforts in Texas the soft touch approach isn't going to do anything good.
