Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

And the weather app, yes. Apparently the app references the group, so that’s interesting.

While "Attack and Dethrone God" is the obvious winner for hilarity, I'm not actually sure why identifying and organizing the victim class is supposed to be a clearly bad thing that their viewers will be repulsed by.

Unless "identify" is meant in the most sarcastic way possible?

The “victim class” is people they don’t like, and I believe the guy was being sarcastic when he said “victim”.

He said police racism was a Communist thing, it’s not much of a leap if he thinks systemic racism is Communist as well. Since the U.S. is not communist, clearly systemic and police racism do not exist, therefore the “victim” class are not victims at all.

Edit: Checking back, the guy said “police racism then (in the 1960s) and police racism now is a phony issue”. So he just thinks it doesn’t exist. Again, I wouldn’t be surprised if he thinks systemic racism doesn’t exist as well. Same line of thought at the end, though - systemic and police racism do not exist, therefore the “victim” class are not victims.

This isn't the first time they've done something like this. The other one I remember was when they were trying to make AOC to be some type of bogeyman, but all the things they (correctly, might I add) said she wanted were all unambiguously good lol

Trump's very much a Hates the Job, Loves the Limelight type of person. He doesn't want to do any of the actual work, but he loves the prestige of being POTUS. That's why he golfs as much as possible. The only part of the job he genuinely enjoys are the rallies.

Tear gas is more dangerous than police let on—especially during the pandemic: It also seeps into homes; contaminates food, furniture; and can cause long-term lung damage.

Yeah, this is just using chemical weapons, no more, no less, and it should be banned.

Oh, and it makes the effects of coronavirus worse as well.

On Tuesday, an open letter signed by nearly 1,300 medical and public health professionals urged the police to stop using "tear gas, smoke, or other respiratory irritants, which could increase risk for COVID-19 by making the respiratory tract more susceptible to infection, exacerbating existing inflammation, and inducing coughing."

CS is particularly painful when it gets on your skin or in your eyes. (Doctors have advised protesters not to wear contact lenses.) When inhaled, the pain induces people to cough. The compound degrades the mucus membranes in your eyes, nose, mouth and lungs—the layers of cells that help protect people from viruses and bacteria.

Scientists know little about how CS affects the general public. The most comprehensive studies were conducted by the US military on thousands of recruits who were exposed to tear gas during training exercises. Afterward, it left them at higher risk for contracting influenza, pneumonia, bronchitis and other respiratory illnesses.

The soldiers were generally healthier than the average person, with fewer underlying conditions like asthma or heart disease. Studies of civilians in Turkey found that people who are repeatedly exposed to tear gas are more likely to have chronic bronchitis or chest pains and coughing that can last for weeks. It may also be linked to miscarriages.

Parikh, the Langone Health doctor, is particularly worried about children at the protests. Their lungs and immune system are still developing, and tear gas could lead to neurological problems or permanent skin or eye damage if it’s not washed off quickly.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, severe tear gas poisoning, particularly if the gas was released in an enclosed space — can blind or kill people through chemical burns and respiratory failure. Prisoners with respiratory conditions have died after inhaling tear gas in poorly ventilated areas. On Wednesday, an inmate at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn died after guards sprayed him with pepper spray, another kind of tear gas that causes similar health effects as CS.

Tear gas weakens the demonstrators’ protections against the coronavirus, said Dr. Abraar Karan, a physician at Harvard Medical School who’s working on the coronavirus response. Infections increase when people cough or talk loudly, he said, and even if someone is wearing a mask, when they’re hit with tear gas, they’ll take off the mask as they’re coughing. “Not only are you vigorously coughing, you’re vigorously inhaling to try and get more air in.” Panic can cause a stampede, forcing people into close proximity as they’re expelling large droplets from their mouths, he said, perfectly describing the situation that Chowdhury experienced on Monday.

Jordt said he was surprised by the sheer quantity of tear gas used by police in recent days, based on what he’s seen in online videos and news clips. Instead of reserving it for the most extreme situations, “it’s more like fumigating and flushing people out,” he said. “Tear gas has become a 1st line response, not a last resort,” he added in an email.

If the gas gets indoors, people should wipe down their countertops and other surfaces with large amounts of water and soap, Jordt said. Any food that wasn’t in a closed container could be contaminated and should be thrown out, and in extreme cases with large amounts of tear gas, residents and business owners may need to contact fire departments for recommendations of professional cleaning services, he added.

Tear gas is banned in international warfare, but it is classified as a “riot control agent” that law enforcement can use for crowd control. Yet instead of calming the situation, tear gas can sometimes “cause counter aggression,” Jordt said. “It just doesn’t work well, and it hits the weakest people the most, and causes the most complications in them.”

[up] That seems pretty obvious: COVID-19's most serious symptoms are caused not by the virus itself but by the immune system's overreaction to it. Tear gas and other irritants also provoke inflammatory responses and would aggravate those symptoms.

As for Lindsey Graham, I am not at all shocked, nor even surprised, but this seems a little too good to be true. I was going to post about it but thought better due to what I felt was the risk of spreading rumors, but that ship has clearly sailed. If it is true... man. It would be ironic for him to lose his job because of homophobic white men.

The way police use chemical agents has a lot of issues, but that they’re “banned for war” isn’t one of them. Expanding bullets are similarly banned, yet they’re used by pretty much every kind of armed law enforcement worldwide due to the fact that they’re less likely to overpenetrate. As it happens, the same treaty that banned tear gas in warfare has language specifically permitting it for domestic use.

The issue isn’t that police are using tear gas and other chemical agents, the issue is how they’re using them. They’re doing so indiscriminately, and often in ways that pose a risk of serious, permanent bodily harm to the people they’re using them on, such as spraying mace in people’s eyes at point blank range or hitting them directly with a gas grenade. Chemical agents have a role in law enforcement, but only if they’re used appropriately.

They should have sent a poet.

Tear gas is banned in warfare not because it's considered excessively dangerous or cruel, but because it could easily lead to actual WMD deployment in the confusion of battle.

That said, it and other less lethal domestic policing weapons have serious issues. But I'm not sure what the alternatives are at this point, said options have their place. They are just being misused now.

You don't see a problem with using a chemical weapon on civilians that would be a war crime if you used it on soldiers during war?

Also, like the article notes, this stuff has a lot of collateral damage on non-protesters as well.

I think tear gas is better than guns. I support the greater proliferation of non-lethal weapons.

I don't think tear gas should be used on peaceful protestors.
