Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Hardly surprising. The man is a black Republican. Has to be some bigotry there (probably internalized as well)

I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa.I remember having to read his book for summer reading one year.
From what I remember from it, I wouldn't have pegged him from being nearly this crazy in real life.

You can call it a small touch of conspiracy theory-esque thinking, but I’ve honestly come to believe that the reason there are no mentions of rules or requirements for political parties in the constitution is because the power players in those factions wanted to exploit the lack of rules.
Everyone knew that there were different factions, that being part of those factions was an easier route to power and controlling Congress, etc. As long as nothing placed hard limits on the parties, they could run them as they pleased, and use the parties they ran to shape the direction of how things would run in the country afterwards.
| Wandering, but not lost. | If people bring so much courage to this world...◊ |I'm pretty sure Black Republicans don't all have internalized racism. They're motivated by the same things most other Republicans are motivated by besides racism.
Disgusted, but not surprisedIncluding calling trans women “big, hairy men”.
More evidence of how the Republicans are bigoted wretches.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnIncluding other kinds of bigotry. As evidenced
"...in the end the Shadow was only a small and passing thing: there was light and high beauty for ever beyond its reach."Meanwhile, it's been only two years since Harvey and Texas is again underwater, this time from ex-Tropical Storm Imelda.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWell, of course, not all of them.
It just seems very counterproductive to me. Black people tend to be part of a lot of social and socioeconomic categories that Republicans make it their mission to oppress or destroy.

Don't know if they're a non paywall source.
I was expecting the King reference to be about Martin Luther King, rather than the quote in Black Panther.
Wa Po has received more information that the whistleblower allegation is that Trump personally called the president of Ukraine to get him to investigate Biden's son as part of a smear campaign.
I'd love to know what the president of Ukraine said in response to Trump's demands, probably a two letter word
New theme music also a boxHas anybody heard the story about the recently deceased abortion doctor from Indiana who was supposedly endorsed by a democratic candidate and who has supposedly collected some 2000 dead fetuses?
I'm not gonna fall for any right-wing outrage stories, so does anybody know about what's really going on?

Skim reading doesn't really throw up anything about being a democrat supporter
New theme music also a boxTrump deploying troops to help defend Saudi Arabia and speed up weapons deliveries.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."I see they're going with 'Iran did it'
New theme music also a boxIran probably did, they're enemies with Saudi Arabia and extensively support the Houthis.
"Sandwiches are probably easier to fix than the actual problems" -HylarnEven if Iran didn’t literally do it, they supply the vast majority of the high-end weapons the Houthis have. Things like drones, IRBMs, and anti-shipping missiles. You know, the dangerous stuff.
Though the Houthis now seem to be saying they’ll cease direct attacks on Saudi Arabia. [1] Not sure if that’s been posted yet.

They should have sent a poet.So Pelosi is still refusing to impeach and everyone else is just stewing about it.
This is ridiculous. If she refuses to do the right thing, she needs to get the boot
I guess, after a night of pillaging and raping, a Viking wants a little something to go with his cocoa. She is doing the right thing and everyone clamoring for impeachment needs to fall in line.
We need to win, not fall on our sword to feel all warm and fuzzy about ourselves.
Oh really when?Anyone pushing for impeachment to begin should at least acknowledge the reality that it's not going to get Trump out of office.
Disgusted, but not surprisedShe has a position and is refusing to use it. I’m really annoyed by all the leeway she’s getting here. It’s not 4d chess, she’s just a coward.
Pelosi is going to get Trump re-elected.
Part of the issue is that she's humiliating herself, the Democrat Party, and the rule of law out of the belief that it will hurt the Democratic Party's chances in the election. Whether or not you believe it is right or wrong to not impeach on the grounds that it could hurt your political chances, she's just flat out wrong. I have nothing but contempt for her and deservedly so—many people feel this. Which will hurt the Democratic party.
Because she's a criminal now. One whose refusal to do her job makes her an accessory.
For good intentions, yes, but she has no business in public service.

Ben Carson made several bigoted remarks about trans people during a meeting.
Including calling trans women “big, hairy men”.
