The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

Bolton is officially out, though he said he'd offered to resign last night, and Trump is saying he was fired.

This. This, right here. This is how the headlines should describe what just happened.

But they won't.

Indeed smile

I specifically chose that wording to make it clear that I wasn't grateful to Trump, he shouldn't get points for firing the maniac that he hired.

What a joke this administration is. Oh well, at least we won't be going to war with Iran now.

I don't get why Iran. Venezuela is a far more justifiable target as far as PR goes.

[up][up]I don't think the evidence shows that. Trump fundamentally is a timid and lazy creature, if a problem isn't cheaply and quickly solved then he grows tired of it. Look at Venezuela, he was all about putting pressure on them but nothing came of it so he grew bored and backed off.

Fundamentally Trump doesn't want something as time-consuming and risky as a war, that doesn't mean that he couldn't start one but it does mean that there is every reason to believe that he doesn't want this.

[up]The Right has harbored a mindless hatred for Iran for a long time, it's a natural target for their antagonism.

Lemme guess how the next few days are gonna go. Bolton insists he quit and was not fired, Trump retorts that Bolton is a liar and a loser (despite that he only hires the best people), Bolton goes on the talk shows making his case while Trump insults him and says he's a disgrace. Can we skip to the end please?

For the neocons it has to do with Iran overthrowing the US backed dictatorship, following by Iran opposition to Israel and compounded by the Iranian regime making more bad blood with things like Iraq.

For Trump it’s much simpler, it was about pissing on Obama’s legacy.

[up]X3 I think that’s the point being made, Trump doesn’t want a war, he wants a victory, if he could invade say Haiti and make a big PR win out of it he would love to.

Apparently Trump's people had been trying to get Bolton fired for a while, but really ramped up the pressure this last week.

Bolton says he offered to resign last night, but apparently was so unaware his firing was this imminent that he still went on to chair a committee meeting this morning and was on his way to a press conference with Pompeo and Mnuchin when he got the word.

Yeah, as much as I hate Bolton, that kind of treatment is just loathsome - seriously, that's worse than when Trump fired Comey in such a way that he learned about it through the news, because Comey hadn't offered his resignation prior, nor was he imminently expected at an official meeting.

Perhaps, but it still shows once again just how horrible Trump is.

I mean, you'd expect him to treat his own side with a least a modicum of common courtesy.

Jesse Ventura would probably be one of the most reasonable choices he would ever make.

Although, given that Ventura is now a Russian propagandist himself...

Jesse Ventura wouldn't even be in consideration anyway. He went with Gary Johnson (switching to Jill Stein) in the 2016 election. He also said that if he ran in 2020, he would beat Trump easily.

I'm never going to say this again but "I'm with Trump."

Trump is the proverbial stopped clock that Bolton is a lunatic and needed to be fired.

Mind you, HE HIRED HIM, but Trump's reasons for firing Bolton are valid.

And in all other cases, Screw that Bastard.
