The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

[up]. He’s like at 375 tweets in or something, and I’m on mobile.

here’s the thread reader app version, if that works better

It’s super detailed, and has a ton of breadth, so it’s good if you are really interested in the investigation.

I’ll see if I can find a main points version as well.

Some notable stuff to watch out for in volume One Searchable Version of report here

Note the difference between "established" and "did not establish." So, Mueller says he "established" (determined) that the Mayflower interaction between Kislyak and Trump aides was non-substantive. But it "did not establish" (couldn't prove beyond a reasonable doubt) that Trump was involved—or Russia was involved—in the RNC platform change, even though Gordon said the former and Kilimnik said the latter. But see the difference: Mueller isn't excluding the possibility Trump and/or Russia orchestrated the change—he couldn't *prove* it fully.

Mueller then provides a *litany* of ways in which his Office was stymied in its efforts to get at the truth—explaining, in part, why many things couldn't be established beyond a reasonable doubt. This section should get *much* more attention by the media than it likely will. Here's the stated list of causes:

  1. FIFTH AMENDMENT INVOCATIONS
  2. DOJ policies on attorneys and media
  3. Legal privilege protected by "taint team" review
  4. FALSE AND INCOMPLETE INFORMATION BY TRUMPISTS
  5. WITNESSES AND DOCUMENTS ABROAD
  6. DESTRUCTION OF EVIDENCE

...Mueller essentially says that a good deal of counterintelligence information—the category of information that'd tell us whether Trump is *impeachable as a national security threat* (because he is compromised)—is absent from the Report. He also implies those probes continue.

Will keep this updated as I read it

The IRA

The IRA pages are heavily redacted, which actually makes sense, since that's more part of the Counter-Intelligence side of the investigation, but here's the important bits from what's readable: (Overall though, aside from a few segments, the redacting is still pretty light, all things considered.)

Mueller's report says that internal IRA documents began referencing aiding Trump at *least* as early as *February 2016* (essentially, the very beginning of the GOP primaries, suggesting that Putin was on board with Trump becoming president from the very beginning of voting).

The Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency's 100% pro-Trump propaganda campaign reached "tens of millions" of American voters, per the Mueller Report. Remember: this was an election decided in Trump's favor by... 77,000 votes.

We always knew Trump aides and allies amplified Russian propaganda, but Mueller confirms it in writing, naming Micheal Flynn, Rodger Stone, and Shaun Hannity.

Assange:

One thing that is *unmistakable* from Mueller's evidence is that Wiki Leaks was indeed a pass-through for Russian military intelligence. It will be very interesting to see, therefore, what the feds do with Julian Assange once he gets stateside. That could be a whole new saga.

Mueller establishes that the *whole Seth Rich storyline* concocted by Wiki Leaks—pushed by Sean Hannity—was a *concerted* effort by Wiki Leaks to *hide* that it was working with Russian military intelligence. Going to break from lawspeak a moment and say Assange is hosed.

It took FIVE HOURS from Trump saying "Russia, if you're listening" until Russian military intelligence hacks seeking exactly the material Trump had asked the Russians to provide—I seem to recall from law school that "willful ignorance" isn't a defense to aiding and abetting?

I need sleep, but I'll try to do more in the morning.

My take-aways from Abramson's thread:

  1. The criminal standard for "proof" is really high
  2. While the report is pretty damning, most of it (or at least the unredacted bits) is stuff that people who've been following, say, WTFJHT would already know
  3. There's also a bunch of conspiracy stuff going on involving the middle east that's barely covered in the report
  4. The pee-pee tape is real

The question is, has it been destroyed already?surprised

But seriously at this point the Russians definitely have something on him. Not necessarily some kind of blackmail, as I consider him pretty damned easy to bribe with real estate and shit.

[up] Isn't the tape about him paying prostitutes to pee on a bed and not having them pee on him?

This often gets misrepresented a lot because "Trump paid people to piss on him" gets more laughs, I guess?

Well, that's the first I've heard of that. And watersports is a thing that some people are genuinely into. Though I guess the other is the kind of petty bullshit Trump would engage in.

[up] From what I remember, the bed in question was the one Obama slept in once when he was president and visiting Moscow.

So what's more likely? Trump paying prostitutes to urinate on him? Or Trump paying prostitutes to urinate on a bed Obama once slept in?

Well, not knowing him personally, I would have to say that I am uncomfortable with this type of gossip about famous people I don't know, man. And in light of all the crimes, kind of petty to focus on.

While we shouldn't let it distract us from the rest of Trump's misdeeds, it does reinforce just how utterly petty Trump is. Part of the horror of Trump is the sheer pettiness of the man.

The pettiness that would drive Trump to have prostitutes pee on a hotel bed just because Obama used it once is the same pettiness that drives Trump to try and destroy everything Obama built as POTUS, such as the ACA and the Iran Nuclear Deal.

All this...because a black man roasted him at a public event (in response to Trump spreading racist birtherism conspiracies).

Fuck Trump supporters are loons to believe Trump is a manly man out for their best interests.

Ah, birtherism.

That alone should have excluded Trump from any political position. Instead, so many people appear to have forgotten it happened. Because there are so many things Trump has done that people stop talking about the previous things he has done.

Which, don't forget, is by design. Overwhelming amounts of controversy makes it hard to focus on one thing, and keeps the focus on him. None of which is new, but I feel it needs repeating.

Trump is the Ugly American President. The Bully President. He combines everything wrong and ugly with the USA with the childish petty cruelty of every bully one has met in their life.

Part of why I am so disturbed by Trump being POTUS is that he reminds me too much of some bullies I've had to put up with in my youth.

It's similar to why a lot of Hollywood types don't like Trump. As Seth Macfarlane once claimed, it's because Trump reminds them too much of every asshole director, executive, producer, etc. in Hollywood. Yes, Hollywood is kind of a fucked up culture.

If reporting on objective reality dehumanizes the right, perhaps they should consider why. Maybe do a little introspection.

Democrats certainly aren’t locking kids in cages, that much is for sure.
