Nov 2023 Mod notice:
There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.
If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.
Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.
If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.
In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

So they're spineless for presenting more or less the same deal that everyone had already agreed to right up until FOX slated it rather than giving more?
"Yup. That tasted purple."And its spineless to give zero compromise, making a shutdown unequivocably their fault. What they gave has been on line with their past compromises before.
They made a reasonable compromise, giving some ground to not have a good part of a million people go through the hardships of shutdown again, while retaining the opposition to the big No's. Thats not spinless, thats reasonable governing.

"You can reply to this Message!"There's been border security money in the mix from the get go. It's the Wall Democrats have been dead set against, and you'll note the headline of the linked article is "Lawmakers reach deal to avert shutdown with fence funding but no money for border wall"
So where, precisely, is the spineless fuck-up here, ~golgothasArisen?

Read the article. 55 miles of a barrier on the border. Enhancing the border fence already there. Funding Homeland Security and ICE even more than last year.
"If you spend all your heart / On something that has died / You are not alive and that can't be a life"x2 Exactly; On top of that, 1.7 Billion for Fencing and Smart Measures is way lower then Trump's current demands (5.7 Billion for Concrete Walling and Steel Slats). If Trump signs it, the Democrats win, at least in the short term.

The fear is understandably that although the funding is for the boarder it may somehow find itself unwittingly being used to fund the wall, the very thing they're dead against
New theme music also a boxIm pretty sure there's language in the bill prevening that.
"You can reply to this Message!"But none of that was out of the question to begin with. Their one had line was the wall, which isn't in the deal and even if the funds try to get used for it there's less then a third of what Trump wanted, which would never have been enough in the first place
So still not seeing a spineless fuck-up outside of "they didn't thwart Republicans completely" which, fun as it is to see, isn't actually their job.

Can you impeach somebody for misappropriating government funds? Because I'm pretty sure that's what you'd call it if Trump used that money to build - well, try to build - his wall.
Welcome to Estalia, gentlemen.I have the distinct impression that that funding has built-in tripwires, alarm bells, CCTV and other assorted squawkers. Should one cent go walkabout, Congress will know.
And, down the hammer will come.
It's an impeachable offence yes,but could the President be impeachable that alone?Probably not
New theme music also a boxYeah, not seeing how the Democratic Party screwed up here.
Disgusted, but not surprisedI'll echo that sentiment: politics is all about compromises, after all. You'll never get everything you want at once.
No matter what the Dems do, it’ll never be enough for some people. They could deliver Trump’s impeachment on a silver platter and a portion of the left would still blame them for not beating him in the first place. And if Hillary had beaten him, they’d be angry that it wasn’t Bernie who won.
Trump supporter attacked a cameraman at the rally. At least it wasn't in the "shoot them" sense.

Cue the cries of “What about antifa “ in 3...2...1...

Do you condemn the violence of Antifa?
A professor of mind talked about how the Antifa declarations were similar to how the GOP came down on Black Power movements.
Whenever someone would talk about Civil Rights, they'd go, "But they're dangerous and violent!"
Author of The Rules of Supervillainy, Cthulhu Armageddon, and United States of Monsters. Can we not do the "you're not explicitly condemning this so obviously you support it" shit?
Please?
"Yup. That tasted purple."Meanwhile, people like Chelsea Clinton are coming out against Ilhan Omar being anti-Zionist, which really just proves how bullshit these people are, taking AIPAC money and all.
This is what people have been talking about ever since 2016. For the Unicorn Brigade, no matter how much of a stand the Dems take, it will never be enough. They apparently have to perform actual fucking magic for people like this to be even remotely satisfied. Decrying every solution while their own are pie-in-the-sky bullshit of the greatest magnitude.
People like this know nothing about politics, much less politics in the U.S. They just want a switch to be flipped and VOILA! PROGRESS!
Fuck that noise.
"Somehow the hated have to walk a tightrope, while those who hate do not.""Do you condemn the violence of Antifa?"
Well yeah, sure. But when right wing terrorists' body count has hit the double digits and antifa's is at a solid...zero, I think focussing on then is a waste of time.
So Trevor Noah did a video on the Northam controversy where he makes an interesting case for Northam remaining in office as Virginia's governor.
What it boils down to is that Virginia used to be the capitol for the Confederate States of America. You'd be hard-pressed to find any white guy in Virginia who has never done some racist shit. It's a state thoroughly saturated with Confederate ideology and always has been.
Northam, however, is a white guy who recognizes that the racist shit in his past was f*cked up and is apparently trying to study up on racism and figure out how this whole "blacks are people" thing works, which is more than one can expect from most Virginian white folks.
It's basically an argument for giving Northam a prize for basic decency, with the caveat that basic decency is abnormal in a teeming hive of racism and slavery.

My Tumblr. Currently liveblogging Haruhi Suzumiya and revisiting Danganronpa V3.Great! Then there isn't a reason to bring up the Antifa.
As for me, I think violence has no place in our political discourse and so this drunk guy hitting this cameraman is just as out of place and wrong as antifa violence.

Yeah, so Dems are agreeing to give billions in border security funding. Glad to see that even when they still have nothing to lose, they still fuck up and lose their spines.
Meanwhile, people like Chelsea Clinton are coming out against Ilhan Omar being anti-Zionist, which really just proves how bullshit these people are, taking AIPAC money and all.
