The General US Politics Thread

Go To

Nov 2023 Mod notice:

There may be other, more specific, threads about some aspects of US politics, but this one tends to act as a hub for all sorts of related news and information, so it's usually one of the busiest OTC threads.

If you're new to OTC, it's worth reading the Introduction to On-Topic Conversations and the On-Topic Conversations debate guidelines before posting here.

Rumor-based, fear-mongering and/or inflammatory statements that damage the quality of the thread will be thumped. Off-topic posts will also be thumped. Repeat offenders may be suspended.

If time spent moderating this thread remains a distraction from moderation of the wiki itself, the thread will need to be locked. We want to avoid that, so please follow the forum rules when posting here.

In line with the general forum rules, 'gravedancing' is prohibited here. If you're celebrating someone's death or hoping that they die, your post will get thumped. This rule applies regardless of what the person you're discussing has said or done.

@Marq FJA: For what it's worth I actually would totally buy that a 10 year old would do something like that.

Hate speech of that sort from a child is grounds for very severe penalties as well. One could easily make the case for expelling the offender, for example.

@Swanpride: Agreed. The thing with symbols (and even words sometimes) is that it's ok for them to mean different things in different cultures. Saying that America is backwards for using red and blue oppositely of Europe is a bit like saying China is backwards for using white as its mourning color.

Mind you, I'm also a little skeptical of the left-right scale in general personally.

The left/right scale is kind of useful to get a sense for how the the parties stand to each other (and which ones are more likely to be able to work in some sort of coalition), but it certainly doesn't deliver a complete picture.

I think it's good for Dems that the red color ended up with the Republicans. For the sake of getting elected, the last thing they want is being even more associated with the Red Scare.

Yeah, the Right's kinda ruined an entire color for everyone.

In Magic The Gathering, one of my favorite color combinations is Boros (Red/White). My BFF bought me this cool shirt for Christmas that has the Boros emblem on it, which is awesome.

I, uh. I don't wear it in public. Not in this political climate.

As arbitrary as the colour association between red and the left started out—I think something about the split between the Marxists and Anarchists in the First Internationale—it is a pretty firmly entrenched one. There's even a song.

My son's college colors are red and white, and they have a ton of merchandise that's just white text on red background, which we all know isn't a great association.

A preview of today's https://whatthefuckjusthappenedtoday.com :

Prosecutors inadvertently revealed secret criminal charges filed against Wikileaks founder Julian Assange in the U.S. by accidentally mentioning the charges in an unrelated court filing. "The court filing was made in error," said a spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office in Virginia. "That was not the intended name for this filing." The charges against Assange center around the publication of emails from Democrats during the 2016 presidential campaign. (New York Times / Wall Street Journal)

In regards to symbols, I also find it ironic that the elephant is the associated animal with Republicans, given the current situation of the party is hardly dignified like an elephant would suggest. Plus, elephants are an endangered species and Trump lifted a law banning imports of elephant trophies, so it's not like the party respects their animal that much anyway. At least donkeys for democrats can lend you leeway with being called a jackass.

@Commander Ace: The Democratic party's animal is an appropriated insult about Andrew Jackson being called a "Jackass".

The Republican party gets its mascot from a political cartoon showing a donkey (representing the Democrats) dressing up as a lion and scaring away a ton of other animals, except for an unimpressed elephant labelled "The Republican Vote".

It seems like red has been used a lot more often than blue has historically, in regards to political symbolism. Every time it was probably meant to go for Red Is Heroic, but I think more often than not it just symbolizes unchecked authoritarian power and aggression, regardless of political spectrum. Red can be seen as either heroic or evil. Blue tends to symbolize peace, calm and wisdom more often, and I'm cool with that.

Looks like Graham has joined Trump in calling for revenge investigations if the Dems try anything.

Pfft. F*cker, try. Another round of "BUT HER EMAILS THO" is going to have a hard time matching up the level of controversy and criminal behavior that they're clearly trying desperately to keep under wraps.

They're trying to play chicken but have failed to notice that they're the only ones actually standing on the tracks.

Swanpride: I agree, left/right is way too simplistic. And it gives the Republican's bible-thumping crowd too much ammo, as they traditionally believe that left = evil.

@Star Outlaw: As far as I can tell, red tends to be a symbol for aggression and perhaps speed as well (and also Coca-Cola). In that light, I actually would argue that it makes a great deal of sense for the Republicans to be associated with red even from their own perspective, personally. "The Hot-Blooded Hero" trope is something that makes sense for Republicans to associate themselves with.

Most flags worldwide use at least some amount of red so it's hard to give it too specific a political meaning IMO. Having said that, a lot of red is associated with Anarchism, Communism, and Nazism. It's amusingly not a coincidence, either. Nazism appropriated a lot of socialist/communist imagery (which is why the Nazi flag is mostly red). Communism got red from anarchism IIRC.

Red is generally associated with wars and bloodshed when it comes to flags, you see it so often on flags because a number of countries fought wars to become independent/fought a blood revolution and wanted to honour to dead by choosing a colour to represent the fallen.

By the way, Trump told the press earlier today that he's answered Mueller's questions (Guardian reporting).

Five hours ago:

More news from White House pool reporter Tarini Parti:

Trump said he’s answered the questions sent by Mueller’s team. “I’ve answered them very easily. I’m working on them,” he said, stressing his lawyers aren’t the ones writing.

“You always have to be careful answering questions for people who have bad intentions.” “ I haven’t submitted them. I just finished them.”

Four hours ago:

Trump is insisting he answering the questions from Mueller.

“My lawyers aren’t working on it. I’m working on it. My lawyers don’t write the answers. I write the answers” said Trump. He added “The questions were answered by me.” Trump went on to describe what he was asked as “not very difficult questions.”

However, he did say “I haven’t submitted them yet. As you know, I’ve been a bit busy.”

A hate that accuses the kid of being a terrorist and carries an explicit death threat doesn't strike me as something another 10-year-old would write unless they're very messed-up in the head
This makes me wonder how much experience you have with children - kids are capable of being just as terrible and shitty as adults, especially if their parents are shitty and terrible people.

@Blue Ninja 0

It is indeed worth noting that children are basically inexperienced adult and are just as capable of being evil as adults are. Also, 10 is about old enough for someone to care about politics and have an ideology of some sort (including, potentially, a very bad one). That's about the age I started considering myself a conservative (then again I was a bit precocious).

Also I imagine an adult who'd write something like that probably would have done similar things as a kid.
