He's Italian-American. He was raised in NYC before re-discovering the Mushroom Kingdom through working as a plumber.
Well, that's what the cartoons said.
The cartoons say a lot of things but unfortunately it isn;t canon to the games...whatever Mario's canon is.
"Analay, an original fan character from a 2006 non canon comic. Do not steal!"And just remember that the only game that is explicitly non-canon in the Mario franchise is Hotel Mario.
word of god says mario is native to the mushroom kingdom, also in that universe cartoony humans like prof e. gadd, wario, daisy etc. are "normal" while "new donkers" are a seperate species and are the "weird" ones i.e mario is "human" while new donkers are not. I still kinda like the super show/mario 3 show/mario world show's continuity in a "so bad it's good" kinda way though. mostly due to nostalgia and it's kinda hard to NOT hear luigi's or bowser's voice while reading them talk in the mario rpgs. Also, is it just me or does cartoon luigi sound like jamjars from banjo tooie? Like seriously look up jamjars's sounds and watch a clip of one of the cartoons, it's uncanny.
you make me want to do terrible things to you~Thousand Year Door progress: General White Found. Beginning assault on the X-Naut Fortress tomorrow.
Congratulations, you have now put all of the worst things in the game behind you!
Mario is from Brooklyn. This is hard fact. You cannot change my mind. You will not change my mind.
Huh, I still have thousand year door. Should plug it in again. Track down Ms Mowz this time.
Bleye knows Sabers. There's still the moon walk, if that hasn't been done yet.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! That's not the worst part of the game, it's just really slow.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie. While Nintendo has delayed Mario Kart Tour, we do have a new mobile game announced, Dr. Mario World, co-developed with LINE Corporation, an action puzzle game targeting a Japan and US release this summer.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."Not a Mario fan, but I think I might have more interest in it if the game canon Mario and Luigi werw still from Brooklyn and had personalities like in the cartoons I'm not so familiar with.
I don't know why the devs for Mario and Sonic had to make this complicated, and it would be better if they switched ideas imo. Sonic should have just one universe, that just happens to have a wide variety of different places and some human areas along with animal populations with some small planets (and FFS just call it Mobius, I don't think it would be that much of a legal hassle and is better than "Sonic's World.").
Mario, otoh, seems like it would make more sense if he did come from "our" world and found a way into the Mushroom Kingdom, mainly because his and Luigi's more grounded designs stick out amongst the trippy environments.
But it's not like any of these things ever even get brought up in the games. Maybe it would be better if Nintendo and Sega just left it vague. In Mario's case though, I don't think it hurts if there's some kind of lore to him, ot at least something to make him more relatable. I don't doubt that the Mushroom Kingdom needs plumbers, but the occupation just seems really out of place, and that's always the impression Mario gave me. Him just being from there just seems less interesting.

Thunder, Thunder, Thunder...Why should they "just call it mobius" when it was never called that?
Mario has "lore" but it is and will always be dependent on the series of games.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.It was called Mobius in every spinoff that gave it a name at all.
How can Mario have an Italian accent if there's no Italy in the Mushroom World? Actually, I've had a thought about where Mario and Luigi come from. They used to be from Brooklyn, in all the American tie-in media, but then that got reconnected away, and now to say that they were born in the Mushroom Kingdom. Well, we have no idea where their parents came from, so maybe their dad is from Brooklyn and HE fell into a warp pipe in to the Mushroom Kingdom.
Because it worked and it established that the planet wasn't just Earth, and it was something a lot of fans were familiar with. But this isn't the place for that.
Does Mario's world actually have a name for the planet the Mushroom Kingdom is on? I never played Galaxy so I don't know if that was ever brought up. Honestly, I always kind of imagined Mario's world as not a round planet but more like a flat, infinite dimensional plane that has it's own rules of time and space. But I think Galaxy and Odyssey debunk that. Still, the general art style of Mario's environments always gave me that impression of the world operating on a very different set of universal physics.
The impression I get though is that our Earth doesn't exist at all in the current canon, so there is no link. But I like that theory too. Hmm, now I need to research more Mario stuff, because when Odyssey came out I thought he came from New Donk, hence the whole Donkey Kong incident.
And now I have to wonder how the hell Donkey Kong Country fits into all this...

Thunder, Thunder, Thunder...But the New Donk people look like actual people while Mario's a weird tiny man.
It's been 3000 years…It doesn't...because DKC is a different series.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.A different series that's tied directly to the Mario series. Donkey Kong undeniably exists in both.
Sure he does, spin off dude.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie....You do realize that 'Mr. Video', aka 'Jump Man' aka 'Mario' first appeared in the original Donkey Kong arcade game, right? Which is why there is so much crossover between the series-they exist in the same unvierse, full stop; either of them can and occasionally will cross over into the other's region. Not just in the Gaiden/dreamworld games like most spinoffs, but main series as well.
Hmmm, no I don't think so.
And I don't think I will until it actually happens.
But I'm not gonna say that isn't the case, because...I'm leaving it open.
YO. Rules of the Internet 45. Rule 45 is a lie.Super Mario Odyssey isn't fully voiced so it's possible that Mario's accent exists somewhere in their verse.
I've always been of the belief that the twins were born in the Mushroom Kingdom, moved to Brooklyn (or New Donk City as of Odyssey), and then moved back as adults. That's a simple backstory.
From Nintendo's investor meeting: Illumination's Mario movie aiming for 2022.
"We're all paper, we're all scissors, we're all fightin' with our mirrors, scared we'll never find somebody to love."The Detective Pikachu cinematic universe is gonna leave them in the dust.
Your preferences are not everyone else's preferences.
I thought he was Italian or a Mushroom Kingdom citizen.
It's been 3000 years…
