Oh, I guess I was thinking of something else.

Though my objection stands - while I've said recently that I find my tendency to gravitate to certain other writers troubling (though I don't think it's actively a bad thing), it doesn't really seem like a feasible or particularly worthwhile idea even if no one did that.

And again, I'm not actually proposing a masquerade ball thread (or at least that's not all there would be to it). In fact, I think I'm going to take some time to actually brainstorm what I am considering so we don't keep debating a thread proposal that wasn't actually made.

At the risk of prolonging discussion of the not-proposal earlier, I do think it'd be kinda funny if a few characters showed up supposedly wearing costumes yet turned out to not be after all (at the very least, this is what I'd do if such a concept were to be pushed forwards). Enough of that, though.

So far, besides the not-proposal that was being discussed for the past page or so, we had these:

  • A park of some kind, which didn't get much discussion
  • Cantina III, for which one person showed support for but was otherwise mostly ignored (Personally I've come to warm up to this idea quite a bit; I don't think it'd take long to set up and get going since it'd be a fairly small area, especially if Chihuahua is willing to let us reuse the setting from the first two)
  • An amusement park, which I commented on but it was otherwise mostly ignored

Does anyone who hasn't already commented have anything to say about these, or perhaps proposals of their own?

a thread proposal that wasn't actually made.

I feel pretty sure I proposed it. Why are we acting like it was a whisper from the void?

And what about the start date for Worlds' Fair? Have we decided to set it to an earlier date? I'm fine with any day this week.

I don't feel strongly about anything that's been proposed so far, then again, it's very likely I won't have time to participate in it as well as Worlds' Fair.

I've been busy brainstorming ideas for my Halloween-themed thread, which I'm going to post sooner or later. As far as those suggestions go, I'm not a fan of Cantina III, as it goes against my personal goal of having a thread with a lot of things for characters to do besides just sitting around and talking. Ditto the park to a lesser extent.

Also, while again I'm not in favor of "just" a masquerade ball, one thing that did occur to me about it: someone said earlier that they didn't think it could sustain a thread for long, but is that actually a problem? I've said more than once that I think we've redefined the "ideal" thread length to longer than it needs to be, and while I'm not advocating it this time, I think there's room for threads that are designed from the start to be more temporary then others.

[up] I did say that a Halloween thing might lose its flavor over time. Still in favor of it

And done with the OP of Worlds' Fair. Wow, it's long. I made sure to get rid of the part in our usual thread intros about reading the last few pages of the thread, by the way, since that's not enough for people who are actively participating to know what's going on and expecting it to help prospective participants make a sufficiently informed decision about what areas are most receptive to newcomers can be offputting.

EDIT: Changed my mind on the point regarding not bothering large numbers of characters or the setting; it's going into the rules and guidelines folder on the main page.

In the center of a bustling city stands its crown jewels, a trio of grand, enormous pavilions. Within the facade of this old palace churns a city all its own, bodies chattering and exploring and roving about in search of the exotic and new and awe-inspiring. After all, no place could be better, for here, in the form of these stalls and displays for this fair, is where the worlds have chosen to convene. On the convention floor, they hawk their creeds, their products, their livelihoods, all competing for the attention of attendees as diverse as they are. But who is this 'they'? Why, anyone, from anywhere at all. From friendly small businesses to ominous corporations, from rebellions trying to gain ground to dying regimes attempting to rekindle their glory, from scientists and scholars to artists and storytellers. If an attendee can think of it, it could very well be here. Who knows what you'll find?

Hello, Writer's Block, and welcome to the latest installment of the Character Development Threads! These shared story exercises give you the opportunity to develop your characters, practice writing, and have fun alongside your fellow writers, no signups, profiles, or GM approval necessary. Want to join? If the thread's gotten long, there's no need to fear Archive Panic- just head on over to our discussion thread and say so, and we'll give you a recap of what's going on and good spots for working your characters into the thread; how you choose to do this is up to you. A little communication in endeavors such as these can go a long way towards having fun, helping others, getting that kink in your character worked out, getting your characters out of their comfort zone, or whatever you're here for, so if you ever have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask. We're all for helping each other out.

This thread's designated trope page is here, and its map is here. Don't forget to add your contributions to the page!

In this thread, as the introduction and name suggests, your characters will be coming to a convention, a gathering open to the various and sundry worlds of our stories, whether as attendees hoping to see something cool... or as parts of the exhibition themselves. Yes, you, the writer, will be shaping not just the cast and plots, but the setting as well in the form of stalls and exhibits. Note that this necessitates that we keep a few small things in mind to keep things running smoothly.

  • Our standards of location for this thread are intentionally vague to allow ourselves the freedom to make up stalls on the fly as our plots demand, as well as to account for the fact that wandering around between stalls and chatting with your friends is as much a part of the convention experience as the stalls themselves. For the sake of keeping track of people, in lieu of standard location tags in the vein of [Market Hall], we recommend that you also append the names of the characters you're with.
  • Though you're welcome to bring a piece of home in the form of a stall and control the characters running it, you're also welcome to bring a stall that exists solely as a plot device without ever mentioning it again. The basic rules to keep in mind are to write a stall as long as it takes to fulfill its raison d'être, whether that's to develop a faction or similar in your work or to keep the plot moving along, and that stalls can be anything. More specific info can be found on the trope page linked above.
  • If you find yourself unexpectedly busy in other endeavors after entering the thread, there are easy ways to back out, whether you're writing for attendees or stalls. Attendees can step out into the covered walkways connecting the convention buildings or the adjacent courtyard for some fresh air and relief from the constant noise of the crowds, while stalls can suddenly become flooded with enough nameless background characters to render the stall too busy to reply to any troper characters that were interacting with it at the time.

With all that out of the way, we cordially invite you to stay and experience the Character Worlds' Fair! Onwards!

Oh, shit, the Incurable Cough of Death is internet-communicable! D:

(My mom called the doctor on Saturday and whatever kept me up the entire previous night appears to be an allergic reaction, not sickness, which is supported by the fact that Zyrtec, my go-to over-the-counter allergy medication, has helped me the most. No idea what the hell I'm allergic to, though.)

No, I'm sure the gods are just cruel (Awfully coincidental that I can't stop coughing after I told you how annoying that is). At least my cough stops if I keep eating something, which is familiar territory for me.

So, what's going on? Is everyone just sick?

I like the proposed OP, by the way.

In my case, it's just because I have nothing to say beyond the fact that I'm fine with the OP.

[up][up] That, and because I was even more sick all weekend, I didn't start on homework that's due tomorrow. So, yeah.

I added a link to the discussion in the Worlds' Fair OP.

I also noticed that the OP to this thread (the discussion, the one that this very post is in) still says that our current thread is Carnival. :|

I have a practical question: Is there a standard method by which characters from different worlds are arriving at the fair? Are they taking an interdimensional bus/train/plane? Are there portals involved?

By now, it should be clear to all except the most dense of us that sheep are secretly conspiring to kill us all and steal our pants.

There's no standard method, no.

Well, at least not in this thread - many other threads (usually casual threads) have an interdimensional door that characters can walk through to arrive.

Those portals are really overused. No need to have them here.

Characters can arrive 'into the thread' by buss, helicopter or whatever (no need for an interdimensional version). How they got into the world itself is kind of irrelevant.

Character can also already be in one of the halls or waiting in one of the lines outside(if there is any) or whatever. Again how they got there isn't interesting or important.

..."There's no standard method" also means there's nothing wrong with people choosing to explain how their characters got there if they want to. There's just no need to dwell on it or standardize it (even those casual threads sometimes have characters arrive by different means).

Not sure what bothers you about that.

I can't think of a single time I used the portals as an entrance. They never fit with my characters very well, but more importantly, I always thought they were kind of stifling. Like a straightforward procession into the thread, after which most characters tend to wander about aimlessly. I enjoy giving my characters a more purposeful reason for being in one of these settings, and I have an easier time writing naturally with a bit of back-story to tug at that I can make up along the way.

But that's just me.

Not certain how active I'm going to be this week. Besides the fact that my real life is busy for once, the internet at my current residence is being very uncooperative right now.
