This doesn't seem to be a topic yet which I find personally offensive. Both the TV show and the movie can be discussed here (indicate which one).

What did you think of Vision Of Escaflowne?

Somebody at Fox needs to pay for their desecration of it.

I find it hard to be too harsh on Fox as they introduced me to my very first anime. Quite a experience.

This series...is a posterboy for why you MUST watch the entire show(or have someone else watch it) before beginning to dub it....or maybe thats Narutaru.

Either that or this....Dark Horse sucks.

What was so bad about the dub? Hitomi's VA flubs her lines sometimes but the overall effort is good.

I didn't like the ending of Escaflowne. It seemed kind of silly to me, but no doubt I'm missing the point of the series and I just don't understand it or something. Namely, why would they part for no apparent reason right after admitting they loved each other? Just made me go 'Huh?' when I was watching it.

It is implied that both can visit each other at will. But yes, a Bittersweet Ending.

I tried both the original anime and the manga and couldn't get into either...is the movie version worth looking into?

^^^ The abridged series fixed that. ^__^ *hugs the abridged series*

I mean, honestly. This isn't Princess Mononoke. There's no reason why they absolutely have to be apart.

^^ You read the manga? Which version? I avoid the manga like the plague, probably for arbitrary reasons.

What was wrong with the series in your opinion? That could tell me if you will enjoy the movie or not. I thought it was good but not on the same caliber as the show.

[up] Hmmm...well, it's been several years since I watched/read it, and that was only maybe one episode and a volume or two of the manga respectively, so I can't really say anything specific about why I disliked it except that the characters and story just didn't really click with me.

If you ever feel like giving it a second chance, avoid the manga. And watch the first 3 episodes. It takes that long for the story to kick into motion. If you are still bored by the middle of episode 3, quit right there because you won't like the rest.

(And make sure episode 1 is actually episode 1. There was a dreadful Fox Kids dub that cut scenes so badly, 11 episodes were crammed into 7.)

Funny thing, though my memory may be foggy, while Fox Kids did chopp it to bits, I recall that the dub voices were very good.

That's because Fox did not do the dubs. That is Ocean Studios' work. Fox only cut and edited the episodes to make it more family-friendly. Causing its premature demise.

And that's what I meant when I said this show is a posterboy for why you absolutely must watch or know what happens in an entire anime before starting to translate it.

Unless they knew exactly what was going to happen later on and decides to try to make it family friendly anyways, well in that case...it gets torn apart and ends prematurely.

But you said that about dubbing. The dubbing is fine. It is the editing that sucks. In this case, it is not the "Fox Kids dub" that is the problem but the "Fox Kids edit". The dub is Ocean Studios and they did fine.

I get what you are saying. Execs need to study the material better before trying to improve it.

I'll be very honest when I say this. Dub is a short and easy word to type. And more often than not, to most people in the internet, the two are synonymous.

...also, the word edit didn't cross my mind at the time.

Fair enough. I make this mistake all the time. And it doesn't help that some production companies like 4Kids also make their own in-house dubs.

Since all voices in a show are "dubbed", we will refer to the native dub (the Japanese one) as the sub in this thread. All others are "dubs" with the default being the "North American" one unless specified. No prejudice meant.

I just recently got the complete box set (the one which included the movie). I've only watched the TV series so far.

Honestly this was an anime that I started out kind of enjoying, but I really wished it would just end. The final episodes seemed like they were just throwing so much B.S. out there at once.

Unmarked Spoilers!

"OMG crazy evil dude is actually Allen's SISTER!"

"OMG Fate Alteration crap that doesn't make any sense and OMG we must not repeat Atlantis' mistakes or whatever even though we have no clue that's what we're doing or stuff and stuff."

"OMG we love each other but girl must go back to Earth no we're not going to explain why!"

Otherwise I found the whole show horribly cliche and predictable, sorry to say.

The first spoiler was hinted upon early in the show. Allen moping about his family, snapshots of his sister in the field, and the crazy guy's unstable personality were all leading up to the revelation.

The Fate story thread is basically, "Don't mess around with things you don't understand completely". The other moral is for people to create their own destiny instead of relying on gimmicks.

"OMG we love each other but girl must go back to Earth no we're not going to explain why!"

I must admit, this doesn't make any sense. And the show is indeed full of cliches, no getting around that.

[up]You don't need all that gibberish in the url. Just everything before "&feature=autoplay" is fine.

Or use the markup [[ ]] around youtube:video_id. Here the video id is jaRrhGXEZTc.

[up][up]Yes, Dilandau is alive in terms of his body. His personality is dead.

So Funimation is doing their own dub for Escaflowne's extended edition. And they will also offer the old dub too! I loved what I heard of their new dub, I would link to it but I dont want this to be closed for just being "A line and a link" thread thing. I will put the trailer here if requested though.
